On another forum I used to be on, the apostrophe usage was horrendous, so I wrote the following poem highlighting my frustrations:
Apostrophe
I'm sat here reading posts and I am quite incredulous
Looking at all the blooming preposterous
People who's posts are truly obsessive
With the incorrect use of the blooming possessive
It's not just the possessive that they are obsessive
It's also the plural that they are dismissive
And when it comes to shortenings and to contractions
It makes my blood boil to read their bad actions
Some bad examples I've seen include things such as "does'nt"
And "would'nt" and "could'nt" and "have'nt" and "should'nt"
And "apple's" and "pear's" and "banana's" and "grape's"
And "car's" and "motorbike's", all stupid mistakes
Finally let's not forget the "your" and the "you're"
As well as the "there", the "their" and the "they're"
With all this stuff, you'd think I was a highly fanatical
Nit-picker of things that are bad grammatical
And you'd be right!

I've tried to leave them out for ease of quicker thumb typing on my phone, but they do still just want to slip in there. I'll do my best to look after a few of them. |

Are they in mourning too? If they have lost their apostrophes we should set up a collection for them.
I will gather up stray ones and set up a collection point for anyone who needs one.

A mate of mine had to have some of his intestine removed. He was recovering in hospital so I messaged him with "you might need this ; "

When I used a laptop I had a fossilised typing error of substituting a semi colon for an apostrophe. I only realised the other day I don't do it any more cos I use a phone or tablet instead. I do try to tread a line between being a snotty cow and sering my beautiful native tongue mangled. Anyone who has English as a first language is priviliged, it's beautiful. |

I love it too. Simplification serves a purpose but we have so many interesting, beautiful, quirky words that I think it is a shame not to use them for fear of being called a stuck up snob.

I remember years ago Lickety, when I actually got my dictionary out and was looking for the exact meaning of words that you had typed on here. Sometimes it would take me upto half an hour to find the particular word cos I found others that I hadn't even heard of before.
