"According to Saul Griffith ……. In order for Wind-farms to become a viable source of renewable energy that could provide sufficient volume just to meet the worlds present need, we'd need to manufacture and install at least one of the most efficient wind turbines presently available every 5 minutes for the next 25 years…….!. " Saul's a smart bloke and when he's on a roll, he's almost as nerdily funny as Ben Goldacre - I like him. Of course it's easy to take a quote like that out of context - Saul is very much in favour of wind power, what he is trying to say is that we need a massive re-tooling of our energy industry, a multi-faceted energy generation policy, and careful consideration of how we as consumers use it. While some of the numbers he quoted in that particular lecture were pretty mind boggling, there was one that wasn't. "For biofuels we'd have to cover essentially the size of Idaho and Wyoming with genetically engineered algae" In the great scheme of things, that area is tiny - particulary as it could all be done at sea, in deserts, high rise bio/photo reactors. we lack the will not the way

"they explode spectacularly!!!! Only when light aircraft fly into the fookin things. or in 70+mph winds like Scotland had not so long ago" They're mechanical devices - they'll fail occasionally - and they have huge gearboxes that can go bang. In an over-speed wind the blades should feather to prevent over-rotation....

I saw a snippet of a british company doing some trials on some tidal wave power prototypes ,but they are struggling to get funding and expand , the guy was saying that it is perhaps the only renewable that is constant and should be harnessed ,as solar and wind power have there place but rely to much on the weather .. so we might see something british made in the future renewable industry ..

"3 times as expensive per megawatt to build, inefficient, unreliable and a drop in the ocean of what we need. The only reason they are being built is because of the subsidy's the government are paying for them. Which is always going to come back to the end user. There's currently about 3500 in various stages of planning in Scotland alone. Start saving because our energy bills are going to go through the roof in the next 5 - 10 years. Even those in the industry have no idea what the government are doing. They are like mushrooms, keep em in the dark and feed em on shit." Hmm, yeah , it's a shame , because we used to be very good at making sailing ships ,and we took full advantage of the wind and it made us the world trading envy of the world , but slaves power was bound to take over i suppose in the end ...

"i think they are quite hypnotic to watch.....i can see some from my house what i dont get is when it is windy, they dont work.....whats the point??" Oh god... They are huge, mechanical devices. They have safety limits. Over their maximum safer operating speed there is a risk either of gearbox failure, bearing failure or blade failure. You wouldn't want a thirty metre blade coming off and flying round the countryside would you? They're engineered to huge safety tolerances, but even so, if the wind is over the maximum safe operating speed they feather the blades. It's a rare occurrence. If it's just windy and you see one not rotating it's probably undergoing maintenance - you probably wwouldn't want to be working on the gearbox while it's spinning, or fiddling with the wiring while the generator is online...

Yeah , the cost's are a concern , but what peeps still cant seem to grasp is that it wont last forever , so we need to be exploring all options today , for our future generation tomorrow

Quoting build costs is madness - the cost of wind is front end loaded, but the ongoing costs are tiny compared to fossil fuel or nuclear..." Not really when our power generation industry has been privatized we rely mostly on foreign investment. If you have 3 billion ££ to invest and you can only get a third of the power generation capacity if you invest in wind then you'll take that money and invest it elsewhere. Where you can maximize your profits. This has already happened i'm not guessing. As I said previously the only reason anyone is building wind generation here is because right now the government are offering subsidies. However because so much was proposed they are now wavering on that because they know that they are going to have to pay out those subsidies and they know how deep thats going to bite.

Exploring all options and making them all as efficient and green as possible. Obviously some are going to be more so than others but that is what we need to do the best for the enviroment and keep costs down for the end user where possible. All those that say they want everything in renewables have no idea on the practicalities of what they are talking about. Right now its just not possible. We need a balanced energy production network.

"According to that clever bloke Saul Griffith’s calculations If we harvested all the energy available from flow of all the rivers in the world, it would only supply half of humanity's current energy use. If we harvested all the energy available from the actions of the tides around the world it would only supply 1/5 of humanity's current energy use…. So I guess until we eventually crack the process of harnessing Fusion …… the practical answer to our energy needs will continue to depend on a combination of source based on escalating and decreasing ratio’s of natuaral availability and technical efficiency,,,,,,,and Wars " Wars ?,surely your not suggesting we thin a few of the worlds growing population of energy users out are you , lol, Mebbies we could offer peeps money to take a pill when they reach the age of say 80, that would save us big money ,heating ,energy, NHS bills, pensions , and cut down on the queues in the post office

"A sensible energy solution will involve a mix of wind, tidal and solar generation capabilities. Wind is available now, solar is available now. Tidal - still work in progress. Yes, on a still, cloudy, calm sea day - not much power is going to be generated so we will still need some conventional power stations. I have got solar PV panels on my roof. I generate almost all the energy I need during the day (except Sunday when the oven etc is on). AND it makes me money. Evenings I have no option but to draw power from the grid. I happen to find wind turbines soothing to look at. Would I like to have one in my back yard? Well, not *right* in it unless I got some wayleave payments, but nearby? Probably wouldn't mind. Note: I used to live with a 132kV pylon about three doors down when I was living at my parents place - the sound of arcing on a damp/misty day was interesting. Then again - there is distant background noise from the main A road... With more and more houses being built - the demand for energy is only going to go up. Everyone has to realise that appropriate power generation technology will come to a site near us all sometime. That is, unless we are going to limit the number of power-hungry devices we use (like that's going to happen). " theyre working on Pv roof tiles soon all new builds will be electric they just have to mass produce them bring the cost down and look like conventional tiles
