I have straight friends who felt they had to marry even though they are opposed to the institution of marriage. They wanted a civil partnership but it wasn't available to straight couples.
Technically, it means that friends living together or in a long term supportive relationship can enter a partnership to inherit from each other and get each other's pensions.

Exactly, and seems that's the reason so many actually get married these days. I might get around to it before I die, solely for tax purposes.
I still don't quite understand why there's marriage and civil partnership? Where I'm from (US), they are the same--it's a legal contract wherever it's done. Thank god it's mostly now accepted that same sex couples have the same rights as straight ones. |

Civil Partnerships were offered as a compromise to same sex couples instead of granting marriage. Now all the forms are equalised.

Remember that if you get married or have a civil partnership it revokes your existing will so all your assets automatically go to your new partner and not to your children unless you make a new will after your union. |

Yes. Yesterday was the first day that straight couples could register for a civil partnership.
