"My tip? Keep your money in your pocket! Too much a lottery of a race to have "a cert". "

It's just a bit of fun, we don't bet on anything else as we think gambling is a huge waste of money but a flutter on the national is harmless and only once a year

Although Mr B was horrified I put a fiver on each instead of a squid but like I said to him a squid 30 years ago is knocking on a fiver nowadays that's inflation for ya

When we where kids it was a big thing for us to be "allowed" to choose a horse each and my dad would put 5p e/w on it for us.

It is all abit of fun, i only choose because of the names.

W went in the bookies i told jay to choose a horse, he hadnt got his glasses and said i cant see and then there was a horse called "becauseicouldntsee" i also thought of you bouncy when i saw treacle

Synchronised is looking to be the first horse in 78 years to win the National & Cheltenham in the same year, and Ballabriggs is looking for an Aintree Double for the first time since Red Rum in 74 - coincidentally, the father of Balla's trainer died this year and he was Red Rum's trainer.

Seabass is ridden by Katie Walsh, sister of Ruby Walsh, who rides On His Own - and her horse is trained by their father Ted Walsh, who won on Papillon in 2000.

The omen's are there. Risk it if you dare.

guess you are referring to the greed of the Owners & Trainers as it is them who put their horses up for the race ... not those who place the bets

Agree..

Im not anti betting, or racing..nor do I think animals deserve a place at the dinner table..but I hate that race..I wouldnt watch it and I wouldnt put a single penny on a horse that run in it..its barbaric..a 'death race'...if it was 2 or 3 Jockeys being killed every time they would soon put a halt to it..

I absolutely sickens me to see an animal suffer like that..

I have to agree with you Cam, i had a bad riding accident and when i think of the pain i went through and see some of the jockey's fall ouch but as a horse owner/lover it's even more heartbreaking to see a animal in pain and die. Many horses die trying to please, do there best for the owner's that put thme in that position. Just so sad and even worse to some not all but same owner's/trainer's these horses are just number and money lost to them.

As opposed to dying at the age of 4 when they're not wanted for flat racing any more? Please spare us the naive sentimentality - they're just horses...

Really?

People die at the TT most years - it still goes on, and rightly so.

Of the two horses who were destroyed, one broke a leg either running on the flat or attempting a fence without his rider - quite how anyone plans for or prevents that I don't know.

You would be surprised how many unwanted racehorses who are taken on by people who have the time to work with them and there future's look better than ever. As for sentimentality, each to there own but i have met some incredible horses/ponies in my time. The partnership between my horse and i horse is a amazing feeling like any other pet.

I am well aware of the way some people rescue some race horses, but the reality is that many horses are not rescued. If the RSPCA and the other whiners have their way there will be no NH racing, and that means not a few horses dying in races, but thousands of horses dying so sentimental townies can sleep more sanctimoniously in their beds before they try to ban something else that they;ve decided to attack...

To some they're just horses, other people feel a bit differently about animals.

Release them all into the wild, what right do we have domesticating them and making them perform to our will be it eventing, racing, dressage or just schooling

Horses die all the time doing any of the above events, why is one so much worse than the other? You can't pick and choose. Rather hypocrytical don't you think?

My dog is sitting next to me - it's what he's for. Because he was bred and trained to be my companion he is different, and gets trested differently to, say, the animals I eat or the animals that work for my benefit. Just like horses are for racing, or riding - it's why they exist.

And bluntly, it is no big deal to me. They're horses. I'm sure there are people who believe horses are their companions - some may even be so. I am happy for the people who share that companionship with their horses, but these were race horses, doing what they were bred for. We may choose to anthropomorphize them, or see them as having human traits, but at bottom they're big daft animals who would not exist were it not for their rideability in races. Having a thoroughbed as a companion makes no more sense than having a rottweiler as a baby sitter, which is why most companion horses to which people form attachments tend to come from more domesticated breeds.
