Freddie mercury, and George Michael are dead. I think that world really is worse for their parting.
My question is this though, who are we taking for granted? Who is alive today who occupies that space that those guys did? When George died i was like "Oh that's a shame, my Mrs really liked wham", but only a few months later, his passing hit me really hard. "Where's that guy whose vulnerability is beautiful?" I found myself feeling like a part of me was gone. So who is it? Who's alive now whose soul is as beautiful as those guys? I don't it to be too late to appreciate them. |

For me, the world got a little sadder when Stan Lee passed away.
David Attenborough is someone who I never want to leave. Me and my little one love watching his documentaries together |

I think you're overplaying the importance of Mercury and Michael in relation to the whole world.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I'm not sure I have a list.
I was saddened by the deaths, this week, of Clive James and Jonathan Miller. They were ill and in their 80s. Gary Rhodes, though, was a little shock.
After his death was announced I read about the all the small kindnesses he did for others.
There are beautiful souls in all walks of life. The ones in my life could do with some attention. We always make time to go to the funerals but months and years can go by without contact or seeing each other.

I did ponder the deaths of Strummer and Rik Mayall when they both went but that's because they were idols of my youth and both went suddenly but I can't pretend I was overly perturbed about either.
The 2 poor souls lost in London this week was much more of an upset. |

David Bowie going killed me inside, so sad. Today I suppose it would be Elton John, Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney. Not because I like their music necessarily but because they are just legends that live forever.
If Kate Bush goes though, don't message me for a month |

For me, its when the members of Bon Jovi slowly start to go.
Madonna will be huge, as well as Elton John. Tina Turner, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Barbara Streisand, Bono, Sting, Dave Grohl....
Although, lesser known artists affected me greatly. The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold. Delores O'Riordan was shocking. And every Canadian will get a little teary if you mention Gord Downie who loved this country so much that in his last legs of life that we all knew about, performed to say goodbye to all of us one last time. |

The most significant musical death in recent years (that I can think of) was Aretha Franklin. They played her songs on the radio for a couple of days and there were in-depth features on all new programmes but that was it, 2 days later it's all forgotten. Do not fret about the famous dying, it's a very short grieving process. |

"And Bob Dylan."
But all the people mentioned have got fuck-all left to offer us. U2 have been releasing the same stuff for years and we've got Greta to save the world. Bono is use to us any more. Same goes for all the others.
Now Viola Beach crashing in Sweden that night, that was sad. The worst ones must be Buddy Holly and Otis Redding, we really missed out there. Dylan has run his race.

Okay.
Theres been little snippets and comments you have made throughout this thread - in my opinion - that have gotten on my nerves with that I feel is undermining what's important to some people according to your own perception or opinion.
Clem - from what I can tell - nor anyone else here from what I can tell - did not ask for what I can see is as judgemental prose to follow what you want to push for your own agenda.
Thanks. And if you would like to discuss this further. My inbox is open.

I get the like of Bowie and Dylan because they were special players, more than just what they originally became famous for. I understand why people would feel a certain amount of grief for their passing. |

Most of you are mentioning artists who have already moved on. You may think my mention of Robbie Williams to be flippant. Maybe you've never listened to him. I don't mean you've never heard him. There's more. George Micheal was much more than "Last Christmas", Freddie mercury was more than radio gaga, David Bowie was more than Major Tom. These people are ice sculptures. They're beautiful. When they're here you may see them as vacuous, vulgar. Worthless "pop". Then they're gone. I see them as tortured souls. They lay themselves bare, and we are shown pop stars.
They're tortured souls asking for help, yet, all they recieve is paparazzi and salacious stories.
They are more than the sum of their parts. Just listen. |

George Michael was a genuine talent but I honestly think he messed his whole career up with 'that video'. I think he misjudged the public's perception of men giving blow jobs to strangers in a public toilet. |

Hmmm helping hundreds of rough sleepers on the understanding that he got no publicity doesn't really fit that image. George Michael helped others despite the fact he had his own demons to deal with. I think that makes ahim a pretty good human being!

I was genuinely saddened by George’s death but the one that left the biggest mark on me was John Lennon. I was young, impressionable and just getting into music and exploring different genres. He had so much more to give. Incredible to think that next year will be the 40th anniversary of his murder. |

In recent years, the ones that hit me the most were Gary Speed (watched Wales many times), Gil Scott-Heron (a real musical hero) and Christopher Hitchens.
Although I thought he was wrong on some things, I still watch clips of the latter and feel immensely sad that such an incredible mind is lost to us. I’d love to hear him comment on the state of the world today.
I can’t think of who that’s still with us would provoke that reaction, but I’m sure there are some. Was sad about Clive James and Jonathan Miller this week though. My dad knew the latter at uni (same course) and said he was great. |

Dylan is still here. Not sure I'd describe him as a sweet soul though, but he's the most important musician of my life. If you want a sweet soul then Jeff Lynn. That guy has genius and humility in equal measure. |

John Peel's death hit me hard as he was responsible for opening my ears to all the music I love.
I really couldn't say who's death would affect me when they pass.
I guess we do kinda take people for granted until they're gone.
I mean, before Peel died I didn't think about what it would be like if he wasn't with us anymore, but the day I heard the news I just couldn't stop the tears |

Chris Cornell's suicide has been the worst one for me so far. I've loved his music for so many years and he wrote the best song about depression that I know. It's painful to know someone who gave so much pleasure felt so low. |

Talent is obviously a special thing but if someone's music moves you that's more important to me. To be honest I think that was the entire point of the band so you're just proving it worked and you're right, Night Boat to Cairo does make me think of a time that sometimes I'd long to go back to. |

I don't know what you think I've said there but it's widely accepted that Michael struggled with his declining popularity, watch the documentary. I'm not judging him or calling him a bad person. I'm sure lots of famous people struggle with it.
Seeing as you brought it up though; let's just be thankful that he never killed anybody that night that he drove his car through a shop window whilst off his head on various substances.
I know an innocent member of Joe Public being chalked off is not as important as a drug actic who can sing a bit carping it but still, it would have been a shame for the potential victim's family.

A drug addict who can sing a bit? Wow. If that's genuinely how you see George Michael then I'm not sure what to say. If you want to assassinate his character then go ahead but dismissing his talent is just insane. He wrote songs, he didn't just sing them. He wrote songs people will be listening to in fifty years time. |

That was me nipping back because somebody turned something I said. I've posted on here before that I thought he was brilliant. Some of the stuff he wrote when he was 17/18, just a boy, was brilliant. Up there with the best writers at that age. Cowboys and Angels is such a fantastic song, shame it flew under the radar.
He was ruined by his lifestyle and his demons, that's a real shame. In effect he's more of a Pete Doherty than a Cliff Richard.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've obviously misunderstood, apologies. Praying for Time is so resonant now I can hardly bear to listen to it. I could die happy if I'd written that song. And don't tell me for a minute you can hear Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me without thinking of him, cos I can't. |
