Why are people mean?

North East Scotland, mostly

I have started to write this three times, and hope I'll get it right this time!

Disclaimer: I'm not claiming to be perfect, I'm genuinely interested...

Why do people post on the forums with the intention of being insulting, or derogatory, or rude? I honestly don't understand it. Heated discussion, yes, differences of opinion, yes, but straight up nastiness? I don't get it.

People are complex. We have many layers - some reveal more of themselves than others on here. All part of the reason I find it so interesting. But I am genuinely baffled by people whose motivation seems to be to cause harm and upset.

Please, play nicely in the comments, everyone...

For as many reasons as there are people, I guess.

I think there's often elements of insecurity or wounded pride. And wanting support in that. Unfortunately the catharsis of lashing out can be difficult to resist for many.

Late at night I think drink has a lot to do with it.

At other times I think there are various reasons but a lot of people are very different on line and wouldn't behave that way face to face.

I've used internet forums since the late nineties and its always been a problem.

There really is no need for it. If you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything xx

See, this may have something to do with it. Online behaviour being different to in person. I've never used any kind of forum before so am still pretty naive in that sense. X

I find it hilarious when people lash out honestly, it speaks volumes about them as a person. If they decide to have a pop at me it's usually the most obvious one, 'ur a tranny'

Yes I am, congratulations for stating the obvious

Honestly I just laugh it off, I used to get upset about it and then realised that it's words and they only have power if you let them

Some people just get off on making digs at others. People can usually spot it though so it acts as a great self filter.

Can honestly say, I have never said anything I have regretted or that I would not say to someone's face.....

Sad to see what some to write on here and other forums....

Online anonymity allows them to be, whether they are as ballsy face to face is a different question. However a lot of people seem to forget that they are still talking to real people on the other end of the "fake" Internet.

Some people are just like that on everyday life, so they are going to be regardless.

I think people get frustrated when they're getting no positive attention, so they seek negative attention as they feel its better than nothing.
