Have you ever been out with anyone who comes home smelling of their job?
I saw a couple of girls setting up their mobile catering van on their usual pitch this morning and got to thinking they must go home honking of cooking oil by the time they've finished. |

"What does prison smell like anyway?"
A mixture of dreadful food, sweaty prisoners, and various bodily fluids being thrown around in anger and protest. It’s simply delightful. |

"No. And if my other half came home smelling of his job I’d send him back to work given he works in a prison.
Thought you hated that emoji
I really do, and I thought long and hard about it’s use just then. But I felt it was one of those times when no other emoji would suffice. I mean, hearing the stories of what goes on in there is bad enough, I don’t need to smell the evidence on his homecoming. "
Fair point
I work in an office .. there's no particular odour for me to go home with
Red works in an olafactorily benign environment also
(Note to self, the OED isn't always good bedtime reading) |

Olfactory benign environment. My new favourite phrase. |

When you say 'works' there. Has he been there for a year or more and never had a day off or even been home at all?
If so, I think there's something you need to know. |

Funny you should raise this awkward issue.
The first time I ever tried to call him there, I didn’t specify that he was a member of staff. I just said his name and that I was his partner and I need to speak to him. She argued and argued with me that I couldn’t do that, I’d have to go via this or that department depending on what it was about, and demanded quite rudely to know what my call regarded etc. I kept innocently protesting “it’s a personal family matter, I’m not disclosing it to you sorry, can you just put me through ....” etc. This went on for a while before I finally clicked and went “ohhhhh, we’ve got our wires really crossed here”. Then had to clarify my partner was in fact a member of staff not a prisoner. Awkward is not the word. Now on the rare occasion I call him at work, I *always* ask for Officer (partner’s last name). |
