Do any songs make you emotional?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I’m a great big hairy Biker and I like to think I can keep my emotions in check and be a stoic, stiff upper lip, calm in a crisis sort of guy.
But I can’t listen to “The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot without somehow developing the emotions of a 13 year old girl.
It’s a song describing a ship sinking and it’s the line “at 7pm a main hatchway gave in, he said ‘Fellas it’s been good to know ya’“. Gets me every time
Is it just me?

Some songs make me emotional as do some pieces of music.
Having and expressing emotions and being moved by music isn't something that only happens to 13 year old girls. I'd say it's a sign of maturity myself. |

"Yes definitely. Music can transport you to a time or make you think of a person "
This. It can invoke so many memories. I cant listen to 'the living years' without shedding a tear. Personal reasons why it gets to me x |

I know you are right. Society, or at least the bit I spend most of my time in, still says that “real men” don’t show emotion like that. |

I'm here to tell you that "real" men are human beings and expressing emotions shows that. I'm happy to say that it appears that the younger generations are better able to show emotion and I feel really glad when I see our son hugging his friends. |

I meant to add that seeing men in touch with their emotions is a good thing. Keep it up |

Maybe you need to find a different part of society to hang around in? |

"There are too many to list, tend to associate music to people or moments in time. They're memory reminders for me"
Same for me too. Good times bad times happy and sad times.
Amy Winehouse Love Is A Losing Game the acoustic version from Oct 2006 on the tube is amazing. One of my favorite songs. |

Well I’m here, so that’s something... virtual society
I work in an industry that is almost completely male dominated and, in many respects, behind the times. |

Not a song but a beautiful piece of classical music
Ludovico Einaudi - I giorni
Stunning, my son plays piano and it was one of the first pieces he learnt to play.

I absolutely love Ludovico Einaudi. I think the compilation “Islands” is great and Nightbook is beautiful.
I’ll take in one of his concerts one day |

"Southern Cross" by Crosby Stills and Nash. If you've ever loved and lost. The language of oceans and sailing speak of a distant separation with the power of music your only succour. |

This changes alot for me. Music is always part of my mood. The Pretender by Foo Fighters get ne emotional because of a previous relationship I was in for example.
But what gets me a little teary eyed everytime is the rainbow connection by Kermit the Frog, or the fucking Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Paul and Mary. |

Johnny Cash singing The Beatles - In My Life.
His voice fits the words perfectly, an old man looking back on his life and realising its only love that really matters.
Moonlight Sonata, such a simple melody but it can have me close to tears within seconds. Not because of any memory associated with it, just the tune itself taps straight into your soul. |

So many songs have the ability to take me to a different time and place - some happy and some sad.
But the two that I always turn to to sort myself out when i'm having a tough time are:
Everybody Hurts by REM - it makes me ball my eyes out and lets all the pent up emotions out.
Followed by Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin - this puts the fight back in me, ready to show that I can be tough. |

Yes very much so mainly since I lost my mum suddenly 2 years ago I can't listen to fields of gold by sting as it was the last song played at her funeral without getting tears in my eyes there's also a song a friend of mine wrote that gets me too

I’m a metal head and so is my man, but certain pieces of music just ruin us. ‘The Reason’ by Hoobastank gets us both. So does Fleetwood Mac ‘Go Your Own Way’. He’s a bit of a heathen too so a lot of tribal music gets him, bands like Danheim, Heilung, Wardruna etc. But we both have the flip side too - certain songs will fire us up and make us more aggressive. ‘Disciple’ by Slayer is our gym tune of choice at the minute. Instantly gets my blood up.
I saw an article not long back that said people who have a physical reaction to music, like goosebumps, shivers, tears, make up less than 15% of the population. So we’re a rare breed |

So break yourself against my stones
And spit your pity in my soul
You never needed any help
You sold me out to save yourself...
Slipknot's music is always visceral but that one tears through me, I wish it didn't

I get quite emotional over a lot of music, sometimes it just stirs something in me
First time I heard Wind Beneath my Wings - long before the film was made - I burst into tears, it still makes my cry.
For obvious reasons
The Last Post, Rouse.
Reduces me to gut wrenching sobs

That's what it's for, to help you deal with life's pain. That's why the composer wrote it, to deal with their pain. Plus it's good for your eyes and keeps them healthy and clean |

It’s the line ‘I have no faith distracting me, I know why your prayers will never be answered, God hates us all’ in Disciple that really presses the rage button for my boy

As a 13 year old in 1981 getting ready to go to school putting on my school uniform I had the radio on and the song playing was Reward by a group called The Teardrop Explodes. When then had a phone call from the hospital to say my had grandfather passed away as a young 13 year old hearing my dad and grandmother crying very loudly after they got the phone call from the hospital was very upsetting and frightening for a young timid 13 year old like myself. When I have heard the song played I can only listen to about 20 seconds before switching off the radio even though it is not a sad song it brings back nothing but sad memories. |

"Time to say goodbye - Sarah Brightman, Andre Bocelli
Played at my mum’s funeral in 2004.
Even writing this brings tears to my eyes...
(fem) "
I was going to mention this song too, as it's a bittersweet one for me. I first heard it when visiting Las Vegas and watching the Bellagio fountains with someone very special, and this was playing in accompaniment. The weather was gorgeously sunny and I had a happy tear in my eye at how perfect everything was in that moment.
It was played at my Nan's funeral too and now reminds me of the ups and downs in life. It's such beautiful, heartbreaking song and I very much understand why it moves you to tears now
The only other one that always gets me is Elgar's Nimrod. For me it goes hand-in-hand with respecting and remembering those who sacrificed themselves for our country. A beautiful piece of music which really touches my soul.
