Our tower hhas descided that it doesn't want to go any further than the windows xp screen, it then sees to re boot and start again and again and agian, now mrm's not really that coputer literate but has F8 the keyboard, tried to start at a newer date, reboot, safe mode and everything else that goes with a novice trying to sort a puter out and it seems that he needs a disc which we dont have, xp proffesional, so what now ??

Without the XP disc you're not going to get very far. Did you buy it off the shelf and if so, did it come with a recovery disc? The files you need to reset it should be on that.

Failing that, start it in safe mode again and select the option with network support if it's there and go online and upgrade it to Windows 7.

Adding to the above, have a look on your tower and see if you have a product key sticker attached (usually a green/blue colour). If you do you can borrow someones XP CD to reinstall windows (As long as its the same version of XP e.g XP Home edition etc)

Windows XP has a feature called the recovery console so you can use this to 'repair' XP if you can get your hands on a XP CD. The following link gives more info
