Weight loss motivation

Man half of the couple here.

Has anyone tried to lose a reasonable amount of weight and succeeded?

I’m interested in what made it work. I’ve wanted to lose weight most of my adult life and had a few successes in the past, but nothing that has really stuck.

I wonder if the people who have had success have also had a lot of false starts, if so, what changed to make it work this time?

I know what I need to do; I drink too much and eat too much... how do you install good habits over bad ones?

Cut back on food.

I am proof of this. I always wanted to lose say 2 stone. I only did when I found out about my husbands affair. My anxiety was thru the roof. I couldnt eat. I was still going to the gym. I lost over 2 stone as a result.

Now that I am back eating normally, I havr gained some of that weight back.

They say its 80% food, 20% exercise.

I started to run, and was spurred on by getting better at it quite quickly. I wasn’t really watching the weight loss, but was happy that I could run for longer each time I went out. I found that the beer and food intake was then moderated as I didn’t want to waste the effort I had put in. I lost about 3 stone, and have since started doing weights as I think this has more benefits than just running.

My sister lost 5 stone and she just cut down on portion sizes didn't but snacks so nothing in-between meals apart from fruit and did more exercise. If she felt hungry she went for a walk and 10 months later 5 stone lighter and even better she has kept it off.

Food is ultimately what it comes down to. I highly recommend going to see a nutritionist to guide you with your eating. I did a few years ago and it has made a significant difference.

I lost 3 stone by changing what I ate but also through taking up running, the biggest mistake a lot of people make is they do a 5 mile run then think they can eat anything in sight, sadly it’s not true

Change your eating habits, don’t pick, sit down for meals and enjoy it, exercise, start with something easy to see changes in ,rowing machines are great, little impact on joints and easy to measure gains. Try 30 mins and record how far you go, with 5 x 500 m sprints, with 2 mins rest between, record each time it takes. If you alternate this routine you will see improvements quickly , boost you confidence to try other things, don’t worry about the weight specifically, you will notice your body shape change.

Hope that helps

Hi male here and I've lost 8 stone, I found that just doing the right things and letting it take care of itself worked for me. If you think of it as a "diet" it will consume your whole life.

Don't feel bad about having a treat whatever that means for you as you also have to live alongside what you're trying to achieve as well.

Feel free to DM me and I'll help in any way, I feel so much better than I did now, best regards

I lost 7 stone back in 2001. I won’t go into the dietary details as it wasn’t a sensible nutritious diet (more a heartbreak diet - i just ate bran flakes) but i also did Tae Bo DvD’s at home, which helped. I also joined a gym and swam regularly.

Unfortunately i’ve put the weight back on but i’m looking to start exercising again as i feel ready so will keep an eye on this thread.

I wish you well on your journey OP.

Fear worked for me. Diagnosed type 2 diabetes and found to have a heart ryhthm issue, both of which would be helped some by weight loss.

Shed 5-6 stones in about 6-8 months. Type 2 is now gone (it can be done) and a small amount of medication manages the heart - after initial cardioversion to straighten it out.

Thanks all, I’m already feeling a bit of motivation just from reading your posts.

I still feel I need to understand what made it work “this time” I probably started a diet every Monday morning for 20 years

A friend of mine lost a lot of weight and when I asked him he said “you just have to want it enough”... that’s the problem; I do want it, but I also want a bottle of Malbec and a Chinese...

Download a food tracker app so you can track what you’re eating, it’ll surprise you

I dont like the word diet.

Cut down on portion size, healthy snacks if you need one. No fast food, Dominos pizza etc.

This is me telling me what I need to do! I want to lose about a stone. Willpower = 0. Going thru alot personally at the moment so gym/healhy eating go out the window.

I've lost about 2 stone over a few years after finishing uni. I bulk most of my meals out with fruit and veg. It helps keep you full. I've vastly reduced the amount of carbs I eat but I do eat some, mostly small amounts of rice or sweet potato. Bread is a treat.

Diets don't really work as you don't stick to them, you have to change the way you eat. I know I feel better now I have. I don't worry too much if I go out for meals, etc as again, if how you are eating is affecting you socially, you're unlikely to stick to it. I just make sure I eat well the rest of the week. Most weeks I'll have some form of treat meal. I've also gotten pretty good at allowing myself 1 or 2 of things people bring to work like cake/sweets/biscuits. I just factor it into my calorie intake the rest of the day or even the days around it. Nothing is off limits, just in moderation and you have to weigh up if it's worth being hungrier at a later date. I also try to time higher carb days so they're the day before the gym as it can help improve my performance.

Lately I've started using my fitness pal which has been really useful. I've always hated calorie counting but the app makes it a lot easier. I also realised I wasn't getting enough protein. Addressing that has been really positive for me.

The biggest motivating factor for me lately has been getting really into the gym. When I'm considering indulging I'm less tempted as I don't want to undo all the hard work I've been doing!

Then it's not enough yet lol! I lost a lot of weight a few years after my divorce, but only when I found my strength and just totally committed to it, I used a low carb approach.

Iv always been successful when I put my mind to it and always lose 2 stone in the first 3 months. But then I fall off the wagon and put it all back on fairly quickly.

I think the key is to remember there is no quick fix and lifestyle change is the crux of the matter.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I used to weight 20stone and I knew it was because I ate too much so I got a gastric band to try and help me lose weight.

It isn't a cure and I still have to diet otherwise my weight fluctuates all over the place. Getting in the right mindset is the hardest thing.

I've lost 2 stone since May on a low fat (less than 3%) and low sugar (less than 5%). My slow cooker has been a god send.

I've lost over 100lb in total

Use a smaller plate. We eat with our eyes and tend to finish everything on our plates. Drink water with your meal and finish eating when your full up. There’s no need to eat everything. Don’t eat off others plates.

Cut down on alcohol, spirits are better than beer or lager usually as they have less sugar.

You can still have your Chinese and wine but maybe once a month instead of weekly.

I’ve managed to keep a stone off for about a year. I need to lose more. I’ve taken up tap dancing. Find a fun way to exercise that you’ll stick at. Sex burns calories too!

I (male half) did although I was not especially overweight. I weighed 83kg and need to have heart surgery.

The surgeon told me that the outcome was much better the lower my weight; ideally he wanted me at around 72Kg

My own mortality was all the motivation I needed.

I just cut out all unnecessary calories: just eating breakfast and dinner and no alcohol or snacks. I just ate fruit (grapes mostly) for a snack when I felt hungry.

I have electronic digital scales in the bathroom and weigh myself every morning as soon as I get up (to standardise the weighing)

The weight came off fairly regularly and after 6 months I am now around 68kg and now just monitor my weight daily. If I notice it going back up I just cut out the lunch (which is always small) again.

I'm still being monitored and waiting for the surgery!

At 40, knowledge of the doom and gloom to come wasn't enough for me either tbh. I was 60 when this crap happened. I do think the booze is key - I'd binned that about 9 months prior, and a clear head helps make, and stick to, sensible choices.

I think that’s a big part of it for me. I’m not an alcoholic, but I really do love drinking. I’ve taken the odd month off the booze but never really coupled that with sensible food choices and exercise.

It's really tricky isn't it?

So far I've lost a considerable amount of weight in two years (a slim person amount from a size 28 to 18). I'm still fat but I now am really honest about what I eat and use an app to track how much I'm exactly eating. Once you see your calorie intake before you it's surprising and a good motivator. For me it was also about addressing the reasons behind why I eat so much; once I identified the triggers it was a lot easier. Now I try and eat healthily 5/6 days of the week and don't beat myself up if I eat something that's not healthy - when I did that I'd just think fuck it and eat everything.

I also exercise - started off brisk walking and swimming and now I can jog 5k without wanting to pack it all in. I've also rejoined the gym, I'm quite lucky that people are really supportive of me there and encourage me to go back.

Drinking more water also helped a lot as did taking very honest photos of how I looked. I can see how far I've come and that really helps.

Snap. I was drinking very heavily. Not rockstar levels, but a bottle of scotch didn't last two weekday evenings, even with 6-8 cans of Strongbow and at least half a bottle of red per evening to pad it out.

I'd wanted an excuse to stop rather than a reason, (which is obvious - it's just really bad for you) then my wife got v.ill and had to stop her alcohol intake, along with some other changes, so I stopped too.

On the face of it, I'm an intelligent and logical bloke, but still as prone as anyone to do this stupid crap.

I've been massively overweight but I did get a bit bigger than I was comfortable with once. I made a lifestyle /work change. I lost 2 stone in 2 weeks without even trying.

As far as exercise goes find something you enjoy and you're more likely to keep it up.

Alternatively take up a hobby where exercise is secondary. You won't even notice you're doing it.

Good luck.

For me, I have to have a goal. Not just an abstract goal, of say, look good in jeans or weigh x amount.

I have to have a solid goal. At the minute, it's to complete 3 laps of a 12k obstacle course. Weight is a huge part of that. It's easier to haul 70kg of bodyweight over a Blast wall, than it is 90kg.

For me just smaller portions, more sensible choices, no snacks, plenty of water and moving more worked. Slow but steady..almost 3 sizes down now. No yo-yo effect. And feeling good. Gradual is the way it works for me. But not stopping here. Find your motivation.. Once you nailed that, it's easier to stay on track. All the best!

I lost around 5 stone a few years ago. It required dedication and patience. You didn't gain the weight in a few weeks so don't expect to see results quickly.

I lost that over the space of a year. I just moved more, walked loads and did YouTube workouts and I used myfitnesspal to track my calories. I wouldn't go over 1300 on low exercise days and if I'd done a good walk I'd allow myself around 1700.

I think it's important to eat healthy food and proper meals, cut back on snacking, soda etc.

I've gained loads back now after having my little one and I am not in the right mindset to crack on and start again you really do need to be ready and committed! It isn't easy and the first few weeks are difficult but then it just becomes your normal routine and you get used to it. You'll know when you're ready!

I tracked calories in a spreadsheet. It really helped me focus on my goal of cutting back my food intake. When i saw every little bit take away from my goal it was easier to be a little hungry.

I also drank a lot more water, and cut back on the alcohol.

You can out exercise any diet.

However if you can't exercise that much then cut back on food.

Buy a rice bowl, fill it with cereal for breakfast, and then rice or chips with diced chicken fillet or steak for dinner.

Keep your lunch and snacks healthy, and then exercise, and you will lose weight.

Watch your carb intake. Cut in half the amount of bread, rice and pasta you're eating, replace it with vegetables that grow above ground. Have treats but only at weekends, swap to 85% cocoa dark chocolate (Aldi is best in my opinion) and eat a small amount with a handful of almonds if you want something as a treat during the week. Stay away from beer instead enjoy a vodka with soda and fresh lime as a long drink.

I've had to do this to bring my blood sugars down, a side effect is that I lose about 1lb a week without trying.

Cutdown gradually dont try and cut out all the bad habits at once or you will just crave them. Eat little but often say for example you have 3 meals a day split that into 6 small meals. Eat plenty of rich in fibre foods drink plenty of water. And excercise regular even even if you have a busy schdule break the excercise down uring the day 10 mins here n there

Even small changes to your diet will help you just have to be consistent I know it can be hard at first but believe me stick to it for a little while when you see the improvement and changes to your body it will drive you more that is what keeps me going seeing the results slowly coming

Good luck with your plan
