i think its a great idea
A guy tried to rob me at a bank machine about a month ago with a knife
he had it pressing into my back
so i told him i would just give him the money if he got the knife away
he took the knife away from my back and i elbowed him in the face as hard as i could
i have been suffering from a shoulder injury at that side but still hit him hard enough to make him drop the knife
i dive at it and chucked it down a drainer
he never got a penny |

As someone who was held up at knifepoint many years ago I'd say you don't really know how you're going to react until you're actually in that situation.
It's sad we have to even teach these things at school. |

"A business in Cardiff is teaching children how to fight off a knife attacker..
Money well spent ?
" so it’s a money making scheme for a company? And no I would not send my child to one I’d tell him to runaway and not confront them |

A waste of money they would be far better enrolling in Usane Bolts class of run away quickly to avoid getting poked. |

So many people here underestimating self defence.
Majority of the time if you are confronted by an attacker with a knife (I have been) you are in a position of not being able to run, or it not being as simple as running. Sometimes it is not about theft so handing things over won't help.
Self defence is just as much about knowing when to do it, as it is what to do. True self defence classes should be encouraged. |

There’s been a big rise in knife crime up in the Teeside area and when the perp is up at court not many get a big sentence yes if they have actually stabbed some one then they are jailed but most who have been caught with a knife have been given suspended sentences it’s a joke if you’re carrying a blade it should be 5 years no clever barrister giving the judges sob story’s it should be mandatory 5 years maybe that will deter them a bit (wishful thinking ) |

The issue with self defence is that it relies on you thinking clearly at the time that something happens. For this type of training to really be effective is for it to be practiced to the point of being a reflex.
For me, "the best defence is not be there". Teach kids to know when to run and hide.

It’s taught in all good self defence classes, along with various other scenarios and the best thing to do.
You never know how you are going to react until you are in any given situation, but if you have the basic knowledge when you don’t have the option to run then it’s a good thing in my book

Unfortunately I have faced no less 7 knife attacks, 2 of which ended sadly with a fatality, every one became more scary than the last.
I think it's a sensible idea as long as it's an accredited and responsible provider, that teaches its students its better to run than face a Knife attacker before try to use any skill you have been taught, and as a very last resort.

Urban combat schools are being set up all over the country, I know somebody who teaches in one. Part of me thinks it’s a good thing but at the same time I’m wondering what kinda nd of people are learning urban combat and to what end.
The classes start off quite tame but they progressively become more and more brutal. There’s plenty of info on the net about them plus film on Youtube and all good video streaming sites. |

It's like people who box or do 'body combat' for exercise. All well and good in the gym but unless you have the right mindset, no use whatsoever in a real streetfight. |

Bad idea. Teach them to defuse and walk away. How many people will actually react appropriately? They're kids! |

The instructors I’m talking about also train Seal Team 6, that’s about as mindset as you get. If you work up the levels In urban combat, you’re a dangerous animal on the loose. |

I know knife defence, the first defence is run. Everything after that is only if you can't run.
As someone else said, no one knows how you will react in a real life scenario but for some young people thinking they know how to deal with it could be dangerous. You only need to get it wrong once.
Having said that, the person waving a knife in front of you is more than likely not going to use it, the person sneaking up with it concealed will though. There is very little you can do if you can't see it coming. |

Self defense is never a bad thing to teach especially to girls. I've had to use mine several times to prevent me getting severely hurt or killed.
Some situations with a weapon you can't run from, like if your cornered or it's a shock attack & all you see is a glint of metal heading towards you out of the corner of your eye.
However, discipline must go along side it as well as being taught how to control/deal with your emotions so you don't get angry & attack people. |

Urban combat deals a lot in the early stages with body language and how to spot the onset of an attack with a concealed weapon.
In my own opinion I think urban combat is good up to a point but I’m suspicious that there’s a moment where it switches from defensive to offensive training.
I may be wrong. |

Absolutely, knife crime is really high and it can only be a good thing. I know we shouldn't have to but I've been stabbed twice, a friend of mine who is absolutely lovely and works for charity got stabbed in the face last week. Police have done fuck all it's so annoying. |

Close combat, self-defense etc. All are good but common sense is above all of them. Use it when you think have advantage, else run is best option rather than saving few quids, watch and phone, you don't know the mentality of opponent, one stab is enough to kill you or harm you, if you have stab in desolate place you can bleed to death, I have face 3 guys they were not with knife. Having said that getting knowledge or training to handle adverse condition definitely good, if they teach it what to do at what situation. |

Well if they are trained in self defence, specifically vs a knife, they will have much more of a chance of surviving or not getting injured than somebody with no training in it. |

Any form of combat is about more than techniques. Go ahead and attend any form of Urban or Body Combat classes if you wish, but don't assume that it will prepare you for the real thing. Possibly the best and most realistic of them all is Krav Maga which will at least teach you to use anything at hand and that real fighting is desperate , filthy and should be considered a last resort. |
