I remember when it premiered on TV - only had a 12" black & white, back then.
I also liked The Prisoner on Channel 4 when they first started broadcasting.
Couldnt receive it on our normal telly (no coverage) but my tiny Sinclair Microvision could just about get a watchable signal. |

I had an Eagle Transporter (with detachable passenger compartment) and an Eagle Freighter (with winch and drums of nuclear waste).
I wish i still had them, they're worth upwards of £150 each now. |

At the time I liked they'd give you a preview of what'll happen in the episode during the opening titles. Now it's ever present in programmes and it doesn't half annoy me. So I do blame Space 1999 for it, it's good but no Blakes 7 |

"Wanda Ventham.....phworrrrrr!!!
Was she in Space 1999?.....she looked great in UFO (as did Gabrielle Drake ) "
Oops you're right.
I get a bit carried away with Wanda back then .
And Erin Grey from Buck Rogers.
They both just looked so good in purple . |

Ahhh Space 1999, or as I knew it - Alpha 1999! For a kid passionately into sci-fi, it was the only sci-fi series on SABC TV (and we'd only had TV in South Africa for about a year and a half when they aired it).
They dubbed it into Afrikaans ("Arend Een, Arend Een... dis Maanbasis Alpha... Ontvang jy my?"), which at 9 years old I'd only just started learning! It accelerated my learning the language, because it was the only way I could watch my show! My parents allowed me to stay up until 10 on a Friday night to watch it, and it scared the holy crap out of me. I loved it.
Ah, good memories. |

"Am I right in thinking the original name for the series was Moon Base Alpha? "
Originally, it was conceived to be UFO follow-on, but the financial backers thought the original premise for UFO (alien abductions) had run it's course and the backers wanted all the action to be based on the moonbase. So Gerry Anderson changed tact and devised a storyline whereby the moon would be blasted out of orbit...... |

I'm going on deep recesses of my memory here but was there a lady with weird/ creative type eye makeup in the show?
Someone bought me the toy replica of the space ship from it.
Must have been about 3 years old or so.. |

"Hot brunette called Mira ? Could she turn herself into a cat?

I thought I remembered something like this where someone turned into an animal..(or whether it was another show.) |

"Anyone remember that? I used to love it as a kid and i'm watching it right now. It's still great and a real trip down memory lane. "
I’ve still got an Eagle transporter with the detachable pod. absolutely loved this program. Was one episode where people would be sucked under a door and semi devoured then pushed back out. Frightened the shit out of me that one K |

The whole series is just being re-issued on blu-ray here in the UK, and it looks bloody amazing!
What else is there to say about a show with one of the funkiest theme tunes around, and was so cool that it had both Christopher Lee AND Peter Cushing turning up as guest-stars?? |

I was so hooked on Space 1999. I made myself a commlock and a laser pistol out of lego, and drew my own promotional posters, lol. I've also still got a Dinky Eagle Transporter - a family member bought it in the UK and brought it back to SA as a present for me; one of my prized childhood possessions. |
