We have just winked at somebody because they looked lovely. Even though we were not what they had in mind, we winked anyway.
To us, a wink is like smiling at someone, being polite in a cheeky way, trying to be pleasant in this sometimes unpleasant world we live in.
They responded, to us, in an angry way and unpolite.
Go figure.
