We talked about Led Zeppelin last week so I thought I'd throw this into the ring.

Thanks to Spotify, I have just finished listening to all the Genesis albums, starting in 1969 and following them through to 2007. 15 studio albums and various live ones in two weeks. Some I really enjoyed, some I thought would never end.

There is a clear difference between their earlier prog rock days and their all-out pop stuff which came in the 80s. This has split fans, some of whom think Genesis ended when Peter Gabriel left, others when Steve Hackett left, and others who prefer the pop stuff. Few seem to like it all.

I grew up hearing them well into their pop phase and quite liked them. I saw them in 1992 (their last tour with Phil Collins until the 2007 reunion) and thought they put on an astonishing show.

Having heard all of their early stuff now, I have to say that I think they were more inventive and interesting in their early days. I'm impressed by the wealth of their ideas and originality. I admire how they managed to perform their epic songs which went on and on and changed in mood several times. Phil Collins really is (was - he can't play much now) a great drummer and that shows especially in their early live recordings.

I'm OK with a lot of their pop stuff but I'm more likely to return to their first 10 years for repeated listening.

What are your thoughts on Genesis (the band, not the book in the Bible)?

Yes I’ve got to be honest I was disappointed when I opened this thread to discover what the subject matter was.

Great band and Phil Collins is amazing (both drums and songs) In the Air tonight (the gorilla edges it I must say) is brilliant and Against All Odds is one of my favourite songs

One of my all time favourite bands. I was introduced to them in 77 when And then there were three came out. That was the first album I ever bought. Then I worked backwaters through Wind & Wuthering, Trick of the Tail and Seconds Out. By this time they were my favourite band, so I collected all the albums until Phil Collins left. Plus started on Phil ,Collins solo stuff. I lost a bit of interest by the 90s but rekindled it later as I completed the back catalogue and fell in love with the Gabriel stuff as well.

I go through stages of how much I enjoy listening to them and I’m currently building my Steve Hackett collection

Suffice to say I’m a big fan, but my favourite stuff is still the middle years post Gabriel with Steve Hackett.

I've been fortunate enough to see them live since the 70's, last tour was in support of the Duke album in April 1980.

They were pretty awesome with Gabriel, I saw him on the tour between Trespass and Nursery Crime and then on until his final tour with Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, he'd effectively left the band in '74 after its release but agreed to do the live dates in spring '75 as a farewell to the fans.

I saw the amazing come back dates for Trick Of The Tail with Bill Bruford on drums and the following years Wind & Wuthering in Jan '77 @ Leicester De Montfort with Chester Thompson on drums.

Their triumphant return as the three piece at Knebeorth in June '78 was the gig of a lifetime, the best Knebworth gig I've ever seen!

My last tour was Duke at Sheffield City Hall with the same line up as Kneb '78.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Phil in his Brand X days, they were another phenomenal band that ran parallel to his Genesis career.

Trick of the Tail and Selling England by the Pound are my favourite Genesis albums. Despite having a prog rock tag, Phil Collins has a lot of soul.

I never rated Phil Collins as a drummer until listening to Radio BBC 6 they played a Brand X track with him on drums. He was superb more jazz fusion than rock.
