It's bad when you get politicians who say things they don't believe and do things that they know will be bad for the country, and lie to increase people's prejudices, just to raise their own profile. And often to do lots of stuff to feather their own bank balances, which they make sure is technically not illegal, but is certainly immoral. |

Populism has more than one interpretation, but I beleive one of the main criticisms is that by having the people drive politics it tends towards majority rule. Consequently minorities are not heard. So what supposes to be the essence of democracy can end up being the opposite - it only helps you if you're in agreement with, and like, everyone else, as opposed to a liberal system where everyone is given equal chance. In practice it can be very detrimental to ethnic minorities and helps facilitate racism. But that do I know, this is Fab, anyone want to fuck me? |

"why it is so bad that the populus want their politicians to represent their views. ?
"
Surely it depends how educated the populus is and how much information they have at their disposal and how that information is distorted by an establishment controlled media? For example most people are busy praising Greta Thunberg whilst not realising that she is being manipulated by corporations and NGOs who wish to financialise the green agenda.
Basically most people don't have a fecking clue what is going on.

Throughout human history, clever people have stayed public opinion, often seemingly speaking for the people, rather than manipulating them. It's fine is such people are working for the good of all but often they are not. At times of unrest, great change or discontent, it's too easy for people to be directed to limit their own future, to find scapegoats to blame discontent on, or agree to erode freedoms.
Many problems don't have simple answers, of the type that populist leaders promise. They have fools gold. There's nothing wrong with an honest person wanting to lead and influence change. Sadly many populist leaders are not of the people or for them. Hitler drew millions into his fold, other leaders today are not peaceful, well intentioned men of the people either.
When strong tides of change push, it's easy for democracy to be circumvented, for abuses to happen and the masses to lose liberties and rights for good. |

I question the MPs know best syndrome. No they fecking don't. David Cameron and Anna Soubrey have both said that they thought that the referendum would be a landslide remain. They do not even live in our world. They have nothing to draw on. David Cameron actually had a weekly brief on the cost of a pint of milk and loaf of bread in case a journo tried to catch him out. If the establishment are such experts how come not one of them knew the last global banking collapse was about to happen. Not one of them. Please don't try to persuade me otherwise. Like the rest of us. They don't have a feckin clue. |

"Not for the politics forum but why it is so bad that the populus want their politicians to represent their views. ?
And populism is then a bad thing.. ?
"
It isn't - that's the excuse the extreme liberal and left use to demonise what the majority actually feel, think, and desire so they can perpetuate their values, which they deem superior, but which actually are a small minority view.
But they are the minority with the most power and influence, so they can impose their values on everyone else. The majority tolerate this mostly - oh they grumble and complain, they don't like having 'other' values imposed on them, but bottom line they feel powerless, so they go on tolerating it year after year.
But, eventually, there comes a vote, or a man, maybe a deeply flawed man, or even an outright narcissist. BUT, if that man expresses what they themselves have been feeling, thinking, and desiring for years, then that man and his message will prove extremely popular.
At that point he will be condemned as 'populist' by the liberal left elite, who will all suddenly become mind-readers and insist they know exactly WHY such a man says what he says, and can read his attitudes, intents and ulterior motives.
In my opinion this is the zeitgeist, it is the spirit of the age, and why it is happening the world over. |
