As you folk were so happy to talk about preference I thought I'd start it up again... Only kidding, I will go back to my usual subject for the forums I start... Music! I will first thank those who did comment on my last forum in an understanding way! You're the best! Gonna talk about something I love this time so hopefully no haters.... Anyway, music... I'm looking for Psyche Jazz recommendations again. Or maybe soul, funk, disco or anything I may not of heard. I'm an avid beatmaker and after trawling through the internet for old and rare tunes I thought I'd turn to you lovely people again. The rarer the better please! Even if just a discussion about Northern soul would be great as because of my age (no excuse I know) I haven't heard all the little gems that you might have stashed away. I produce hip hop so like the jazzy side of thing but would just like obscure recommendations from you lovely people.

Thanks in advance

I’m not really into the sort of music you’re talking about, more of a rock chick myself, but love a good music discussion post

Well you are more than welcome to participate! I love rock too! More in my younger years but it's still definitely there. Just a stab in the dark here but checkout the Brian Jonestown Massacre band if you've not heard of them. Brilliant crazy band from the 90s that are not that well known because of the way the lead singer was. Just started listening to them myself and I am hooked!

Ok I think we may be singing from a completely different hymn sheet with this one. Just had a listen to that band and a bit too modern power rock for me. Not saying it's bad, but very nickleback/papa roach-ish at times. Sent it straight to my mate as he loves that sort of vibe. Sort of guy who still's wearing a pearl jam top he bought when we were 17. BJM are more like a 60s revival band that happened in the 90s just before oasis and co took the reigns.

You been listening to rock all your life? Can you recommend any underground instrumental sort of things? Less amps and distortion makes it easier to sample. Think of what crazy town - butterfly did with that red hot chilli peppers pretty little ditty. Might be talking a different language to you here but I also realise you can get great sample recommendations from anyone

NEWTOWNABBEY

Watch the "blues brothers", I'm sure you'll get some inspiration there, especially Cab Calloway singing Minnie the moocher

Not a bad shout. Even got Aretha Franklin belting one out to Apollo Creed and co in that movie. Love it! But not what I need. Thanks though

Leeds

Northern Soul? Amongst my favourites:-

Dean Parrish - I'm On My Way

Jimmy Radcliffe - Long After Tonight Is All Over

Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor

Chuck Wood - Seven Days Is Too Long

Bob Relf - Blowing My Mind To Pieces

Or give the band "Fat Freddy's Drop" a whirl, from New Zealand, long tracks but great listening

I think we might be talking slightly different languages then! I don’t really have much knowledge of the technical side of music, I just love rock music. Yeah been listening to it all my life, my Dad was a guitarist in a rock band when I was growing up

Thanks! I will check all of them out as I don't know any listed.

I know the recommendations must be half decent if you mention Fat Freddy's. Really like them and have done for years. If you like that New Zealand Ska reggae kinda tip there are loads of similar bands like Salmonella Dub, Long beach dub allstars, slightly stooped to name a few. Love my ska reggae!
