planning on hiding from trick or treaters tonight? I got called a “scrooge” at work today because I plan to disconnect the door bell and stay put! It might have something to do with the fact I’m going to the dentist soon and I know I won’t want to be answering the door every 2 mins with a painful swollen mouth. So, I’m wondering ....
Is anyone else not feeling the festive love this evening or am I in fact just a Scrooge? |

"Nah I put on our street Facebook page that we won’t be doing it and explained why. So no need to hide "
I just don’t really get it to be honest... And I really dislike people knocking on the door / ringing the bell all evening when I’m trying to relax! Was also a nightmare when we had our dog, she used to take ages to settle every time the bell went |

I dressed up for my community group today. I'm happy to play along for other people, sometimes. But I don't regard handing out sweets to strange children as something I ought to be doing (in fact I was taught never to take sweets from strangers as a child). |

Well I just think when and if I had kids if they got all excited and dressed up to go trick or treating it would be heart breaking watching them go up to the door all ready to show off and just get ignored and have to walk back all sad wondering why nobody answered |

True but I think enough people buy into it, so there’s enough doors opened and sweets handed out to make up for the odd doors that don’t open |

As a kid, I used to go out and neighbours were always kind, so I am happy to do the same for any kids who come knocking.
It's annoying, but it's a tradition |

Off out with my scary little friend in a sec to make sure she doesn't get stolen.....
....tbh I'm more worried that the house will have been fucked over when we get back. Leaving sweets in a bowl on the doorstep but fully expecting the contents and probably the bowl to have been robbed by the time we return...... |

I’m not hiding either. I have a daughter who used to trick or treat, and I kind of look at it as ‘giving back’, people were generous to her.
Hiding is a bit mean tbh. |

Last time I was willing to participate I bought a load of sweets in and no fecker came, whereas we’d been pestered silly in previous years. So had to stuff them all ourselves.
Off the sweets at the moment so no intention of a repeat. |

They are quite good in our village. The children are told to only knock on doors where there is a pumpkin lit with a candle inside. I'm not a Scrooge, I just don't agree with the concept |

Haha, yes I agree... for the record.. I have no issue with kids doing this in principle. My teen daughter is out with her mates trick or treating as we speak. I just can’t be arsed getting up and down off the couch all night when I’m tryna chill after a long day (with toothache and a swollen mouth) haha |

The concept of children knocking on doors asking for sweets and the fact it scares old people. My dad is 90 and is in bed early, so I don't want kids knocking on his door frightening him. |

I (her) normally decorate the house, dress up, give away far too many sweets but my kids hate trick or treaters.
A few weeks ago I stocked up on sweets, and the other day my kids asked if we could go out instead. So we devoured 1 bag of sweets and each took other bags to our work for colleagues to enjoy.
We now have plans to see our family tonight BUT not until 7pm.... here lies my problem.....
1. I am home alone as my kids are at their dad's house until we need to leave at 7pm. They will remain there as they do not get Halloween visitors
2. I am now a prisoner in my home, I am sat in darkness, apart from my phone screen and a faux flame fire flickering away. I feel like a modern day ebenezer scrooge or Nora Krank (from Christmas with the Kranks film) when the local kids demanded she free frosty!
3. As i type this message i am listening to the terrifying sounds of excited children who have knocked my front door 3 flipping times.
Yes I usually love Halloween but its list its edge this year.... humbug |

To be fair, my daughter and her mates went out tonight in The Purge masks (and they were pretty scary to be fair). There are quite a number of elderly couples on our estate so I did say to her to avoid those houses as you never know what those masks could do to someone! |

Not sure whether a standard thing but when we go if there's nothing outside decoration wise then you don't knock. Witches, pumpkins ec, then you knock.

This is a good idea and probably easier to enforce with the younger kids who go trick or treating with parents. I can’t imagine many groups of teens would pay attention to this... |

Sorry probably didnt make it clear. I do have a personal reason for not being into - I feel it’s a bit intrusive to have people knocking at my door all night and I feel I should be able to just chill in my home if I want to. |

Where we used to live the rule above was followed by everyone, even the groups of teenagers walking around on their own..

That’s good everyone followed it! |

"Guess it’s just me that’s not hiding then, it’s nice when people take a little effort but hey ho
I’m not hiding either. I have a daughter who used to trick or treat, and I kind of look at it as ‘giving back’, people were generous to her.
Hiding is a bit mean tbh. "
I agree it would be mean if they knew for sure I was home and ignoring them, or if I opened the door and told them to f*ck off. But I don’t think hiding without them knowing I’m there is mean - to me it’s just neutral really. I’m not being nice or mean, I’m just not being there! |

"Scrooge.
(I understand it not being part of cultural traditions, about people being a bit of a tight cu.., personal reasons for not being into it. I felt this thread was missing this though).
Sorry probably didnt make it clear. I do have a personal reason for not being into - I feel it’s a bit intrusive to have people knocking at my door all night and I feel I should be able to just chill in my home if I want to. "
Oh no, I got what you had written. Does trick or treating really go on all night in your area? I guess I'm quite fortunate here, it only goes on for a couple of hours. I meant there was a distinct lack of "Scrooge" calling in the thread. |

Yes I used to enjoy the parties when my daughter was younger, she used to look really cute dressed as a little witch or cat or something... The only part of the tradition I have an issue with is the knocking on doors part asking for stuff. Feels intrusive. Maybe I’m just a miserable and antisocial |

Ahhh I’m with you
Well ... by all night I was probably being a little dramatic (it has been known haha). Probably likely to have teenagers knocking til 9.30-10 though. I just find that irritating and intrusive when I’m trying to chill, that’s all |

"planning on hiding from trick or treaters tonight? I got called a “scrooge” at work today because I plan to disconnect the door bell and stay put! It might have something to do with the fact I’m going to the dentist soon and I know I won’t want to be answering the door every 2 mins with a painful swollen mouth. So, I’m wondering ....
Is anyone else not feeling the festive love this evening or am I in fact just a Scrooge? "
Ha ha I’ve dug a moat around my house and filled it with sharks with lasers....no trick or treaters getting to my bell |

I personally don’t like it, having lived in the states and seen how Halloween is truly celebrated over there, in England it such a half arsed effort and “fake” for want of a better word.
However, for the sake of the kids we’ll decorate the house, do pumpkins and got trick or treating as soon as it turns dark, nice and early for an hour - with the one rule we only knock on houses that are clearly also celebrating Halloween with decorations and such. All others are out of bounds. |

I've been out with my kids most of the night, we only go to doors with decorations or pumpkins, and they've got their own bodyweight in sweets
Since we've been home we've had 13 kids at the door, and I'm popping my head out looking for more. It's one night a year and it brings happiness to kids, I love it |

Especially if you buy me a pizza first
Still need clarification on the pizza sex, Google freaked me out....
It goes something like.... hot man buys me a pizza and wine (cheap date), seduces me by candlelight, and we have hot sex. Simples really "
Ohhhh.... ....I feel silly now, Google was telling me to cut a hole in a pizza and make a mess..... |

Nope, I'm in the same camp. To be fair I am the scourge of Halloween. I really don't like it or celebrate it. Maybe because of my religious upbringing (we never did it when I was a kid), although I am not religious. I just find it a bit cheap, tacky and cringeworthy. Luckily I've managed to stay away from it most of my adult life. Mainly by hiding away with the air rifle on the night and just abstaining from parties (which is a shame because I love parties).
But that all changed (not my dislike of it, just my involvement). I unfortunately went and had kids. Then even worse became a single parent. Begrudgingly as a result I've in recent years found myself getting dragged into the fray. I still think humbug to Halloween but I'm not going to let my personal dislike get in the way of the kids enjoying it like the rest of the planet (apparently). Its just another one of those things kids put you through. Plus my partners rather into Halloween too, so I suppose I'd better just accept it. Having said that I draw the line at putting up stupid tacky decorations (sorry kids). |

"I bought some and had to raid my sons sweets as weve had a few already!! I don't mind it's a couple quid and the kids love it!!"
The cost doesn’t really concern me really tbh, it was more the hassle of up and down from the sofa. I like to relax on an evening .
Anyhow - I had a nice quiet pleasant evening after all, so it’s all good |
