Weight loss taken too far

If you were in the position where you were loosing weight would you know when enough becomes too much?
Could loosing weight possibly become addictive?
I've a friend who has done amazingly well at a well known weight loss club and started off at just over 20stone, and her target was 11stone, but now she is re assessing her targets (completely her choice) but her reason 'oh its nice to get down into the next stone bracket'
I'm more than confident she is aware of how she feels within herself but she's shifted the 10stone odd in just over a year..
My grandmother lost some weight a few years back and personally i thought she looked ill at a size 10 and looked healthier at a size 12. So would you know when to stop?
ps.. i clearly have a LONG way to go before i am ever in that situation |

Yes it can become addictive but surely someone looks far healthier at a size 10 than 20. Ok a happy medium is best but if you are active and do exercise you nearly always look more healthy. |

we have met people that have lost 'too much' weight, and they only look better with clothes on. that extra stone, or stone and a half can make all the difference with loose skin.
im with you, cuddles, i have a loong way to go 9lost 3 stone last year, and have to start agian this) and i will know when i have got to where i want to be.
Em is the same, although she isnt big, she was always tiny (between 8 and 10) but now is 12-14 and although she likes ahving tits and an arse, hates her little belly.
its since she has been off the fags and depo (which i have never had, so cant really blame lol) |

Firstly, the main thing to consider when losing weight is how much. It is recommended that you should only aim to lose 1kg or 1-2lb per week. Otherwise you run the risk of losing muscle tissue and therefore gaining weight quicker. (so look at the time frame from baseline weight to overall loss)
Secondly, weight loss can become addictive depending on how it is achieved. Many people may undereat, causing their bodies to store any food as fat making it harder to lose weight and causing other problems. Also many people become addicted to exercise and over exert themselves. (So moderation is the key!!!)
Finally, if you believe someone is losing too much weight; take a look at how fast they lose it, whether their diet& exercise levels have affected their mental & physical health. Also indicators of BMI and Body Fat % being lower than average may indicate too much weight has been lost....

Id like to be able to look into a mirror one day and say 'yup thats me,,, im happy with where i am'
but with the weight loss group its nice to be given certificates and a pat on the back for every 1/2 a stone you loose,, but wondered if it was the achievement thing that becomes addictive and the need to carry on succeeding,, even though you don't need to lose more.
If that makes any kind of sense,, im pant's with words lol |

A large percentage put the weight back on that's why weight loss is such a big business. What is to say people do or do not need to loose more? It's all a matter of what you feel comfortable at. |

LOL, I understood...
Well first off, I dont believe any of us look in the mirror and truly say 'yup thats me,,, i'm happy with where i am' as we all are constantly wanting to improve ourselves...
Secondly, when it comes to weight loss, quitting smoking, giving up alcohol... it requires a certain amount of motivation and social support. I do agree that people that are overweight usually have lower self-esteem so feeling part of a group and appreciated may in itself become obsessive.
Finally, there are many factors to consider and we are all different so want to lose weight for different reasons e.g. to look and feel more attractive or for health benefits |

it is very addictive, I've lost 18 and half stones and keep saying just 2 more stones but I know when I reach that I'll be saying just 1 more. I'll have to be strict with myself. |

wow congratulations.. i guess 'diet' you started has now become a lifestyle change which you'll continue. Must be hard to go from eating to loose to eating to maintain..

I have to be very careful.. years ago.. I was the opposite to what I am now.. I was a dancer.. and i my ballet school we were always encouraged to stay VERY SLIM. I even at my lowest weight felt fat around the other girls that didnt have curves.. I developed early and hated my boobs when I was 12.. as I was a 32C, not huge but big for a ballet dancer..
I ended up with an eating disorder and lots of issues with my self image.. I am struggling a little with that right now again.. and even though I am losing weight.. I find I am now very critical.. and use my eating plan as a way to eat enough as well as not over eating.
Simply I could very easy go to eating a super low calorie diet.. and would no doubt make myself very ill.
I had said I would go down to 10st 7lb the highest weight for my height. I have now already decided that 9st 5 will be my target..
So yes it can go to far... I have ended up 5'4 and weighting just over 6 stone before.. which was not good for me.

its a bit like to drug to some ... thay like the feeling of staving themself ..thay dont see what we see .. as in there head thay are big no matter what you say to them . And when it get like that thay need help. |

fraid i'm a bit of a freak on this one as i hate all the certificate and back patting palava i find it so damn patronising and i have a really hard time biting my tongue with a lot of what is said, but i do see that a lot of people respond well to it and i do understand how some might find it addictive but i know i'm not going to have that problem
i wish to loose just 3 n half more stones, making 10 stone off in total and that will still leave me as a fattie and i'm quite happy to stay there it will mean i won't be overly saggy n baggy but an awful lot fitter and healthier than i was
i would try to encourage any friends to learn to accept themselves for who they are and only loose what they need to make them happy and healthy and not feel the need to bend to conform to the idea you need to be super slim to be happy and healthy |

Everytime I have a child (I have 4) I put on LOADS of weight. The first I went from a size 10 to a size 16, second a size 14 - 20... then after that I lost weight.
I was went from a 20 to a 8-10 and I thought I looked rather gaunt, so I wanted to go back up to when I was a 12, curvy but slim-ish... that's where the problem kicks in for an over eater.
How do you just gain enough? I end up fluctuating between a 10 and 16 because I just can't seem to get the balance just right where I maintain my weight. It's either over eating, dieting. And all that yo-yo dieting is much worse for your health that either being a size 20 or a size 8 and sticking at that size.
I'm on my way down again now, but I really want to stick at 12, and stay there but it's so hard to do! xx |

size 12 is a good size, it all depends how you feel. when i was a teenager i weighed 12 stone then in my twenties i weighed 9 stone, i am 5ft 10 and big boned, my mum used to tell me i looked to thin, only i was eating 3 meals a day, and not starving myself, just not eating junk food. its a good thing not to be obsesed with your weight, but a good thing to be obsesed with eating the right food instead, especialy if you have health problems. as long as you eat enough. my ideal weight is 12 stone, last time i looked, so i have 2 stone more to lose, if i lose more all the better. my sister is tall and size 12 to 14, and looks skinny, i could never be size 12 because i am tall and big boned, when i was 9 stone i was size 14. |

i was in a similar boat i got super slim as a teen and obsessive over what went in my mouth and ended up with an eating disorder but rather than worrying i'll go back there i know i won't. i refuse to get obsessed ever again, i know the signs and if i see them making an appearance i give myself a damn good shake and wake myself up to the fact i'm slipping back to bad ways
i guess its still about control in a way i got the eating disorder out of a need for control of something and i now refuse to let it come back as a form of control again just in a different way if that makes sense |

alot depends on her height, what weight should she her ideal weight be to be fit and healthy and at least risk to health problems.
i can imagine a target of 11 stones at first being a long shot at 20 stone, so after maybe its something that will be right.
i'd just look at that weight and think how realistic is it, sometimes ya worth adding a extra stone on for a more real look |

maintaining is the hardest part of all they say hun and this is what i worry about most i think you have to be even more obsessive over the scales and food to maintain

You may not believe it but I was 9 stone and a size 12. I went from a size 24 about 20 stone to this.. Because I did not eat or if I did it was stupid food that contained no fat. I used to cook my parents fattening meals and sit there and eat salad with a tiny bit of meat. I remember going to Denmark and my family over there who are big eaters reporting back to my mum and dad that I ate like a bird.
This carried on for many years whilst working for British Airways. I then broke up with my first serious b/f and sought comfort in food which then led me to pile on the weight. I have quite an unhealthy relationship with food. I don't like to eat in front of strangers and I am a picker I don't tend to have full on meals.
So I understand her wanting to go to the next level as I kept doing that. I remember my sister coming back from a year in NZ and us picking her up at the airport and she walked straight past me. I do wish I was a size 12 again and 9 stone but I am a pretty confident person. I have taken a knock in the past couple of days where I have been dumped by a bloke I had been seeing some months. It made me feel a bit like I am not surprised he dumped me.
I would say offer her support and tell her how stunning she is now. |

For any one interested there is a excellent book (a little out of date but still good read) called Fat is a Feminist Interest. It's an amazing read about our relationship with food and external pressures from media etc. When I first read it I was a size 22. Taking on board a lot of the points raised in the book my weight reduced and I went down to a sensible size 14. Another issue for the little more mature of us, it does help to carry a "little" extra weight as we reach menopause, it helps prevent Osteoporosis and stops the face from looking gaunt |

Oh I forgot to add I used to weigh myself 3 times a day. To this day I will not buy a pair of scales as I know I will go back to the obessive me. Which I have kind of hidden I have a very obbessive personality but with a lot of work I have managed to overcome that side of my personality. |

It's really not as hard as its made out to mantain the same weight.Its all down to calories at the end of the day,work out the mantainance calories your body needs for that weight depending on how active you are and stick to that amount of calories...

its deffos a proper interest of women like, coz yesterday i put up as my main picture my before and after picture on a dating site yesterday showing us before i lost 11 stone and after saying the amazing shrinking man spot the difference, and ever since ive done that my inbox has been going mental with new people coming along even old ones that stopped talking all getting back in touch, its crazy haha and used to be alright before but now its deffos crackers.
im just glad i did it at the age i did coz i aint really got loose skin at all, and going to the gym while doing it definetally helped my skin shape up with me along with age on my side |

so long as you stay within your weight range its ok, the club will tell her when she's hit her minimum weight loose
But yes it can become addictive, i went from a size 22 to a size 10 about 3 years ago i lost 9 stone in 11 months, i was going to the gym every single day some days twice a day, sometimes going a whole day or even two without eating at all it did make me ill and to the point i simply couldnt do it anymore, its hard doing a work out at the gym when you havnt eaten for 2 days lol but i loved the results, being a size 10 when id been fat all my life made me feel great thing is you cant keep that up forever and the weight slowly crept back on and ive been struggling to keep it down ever sinced |

snap, i smashed mine up with a hammer at my doctors request as i was weighing myself every time i went past the bathroom and i have never purchased another set since, although i did notice when i started this diet that every time i went to tesco i would weigh myself so i had to shake myself out of that one before it took grip again and became an obsession |

I've managed to lose 1.5 stones in the last 3 months, going from 14.5 stone to 13. Nothing like some of the people in this thread but still it's been very quick for me. 3 months ago I wouldn't have dreamed of taking naked photos of myself and sticking them up on some website.
At the start I made the mistake of cutting back on food too much and going to the gym too much, both together I lost half a stone in 2 weeks and felt very ill. I know now that the right thing to do is eat heathily and exercise sensibly, someone else said 1-2 pounds per week and that is spot on, any more than that and you are losing muscle mass and you'll be lighter but your shape will suffer, not to mention other potential problems later on.
When people talk about dieting it makes me cringe because it all too often is losing weight by starvation. It should be about adopting a lifestyle you can maintain long term, not short term crashing.
