I used to work next to his factory ... and would go in and watch the 'artists' on the production line doing the coloured spots on the white canvases. He never even touched most of the stuff he sells.
Marketing is brilliant though but art? Pffff I've seen painters and decorators do better!

Art, Yes, it's not about what he does or how much he handles a paint brush. It's all about the concept.
Leonardo Da Vinci never handled a paint brush when he did the Sistene Chapel but it was still his piece. |

Damien Hirst ( I assume )
Has talent and skills
Studied hard
Served his apprenticeship
Went for years unnoticed
Stuck to what he believed in
Continued to be creative and original
Marketed himself well
Made the right connections
Started small
Developed entrepreneurial skills
Now employs others
Now teaches others
Makes the world a more intersting place
Causes thought
Is worth over £200m
If someone doesn't appreciate the work of an artist including musicians it doesn't make the artist a dingbat
I guess he doesn't spend a lot of time in internet forums. So he'll never know what we think while his next million clicks in |

He is whatever you want to see him as , like any other artist .
Have met him a few times and know quite a few folk who have worked for him . He is a genuinely down to earth guy who still shops in his local town ! ( that's how I have met him lol )
Not sure about his carcass pieces but they evoke a reaction which I guess is good ?

"A dingbat who is vastly over hyped by those that are slightly more pretentious than him....totalt twaddle "
Totally agree! If he is an artist, then so is every person who is a butcher! He is just lucky he was publicised and without the publicity, he would be where he should be... Working in Tescos to fund his silly projects! |

Disagree with you both. I don't like some of his work either and as for getting a break or he'd be nothing.... isn't that everyone's story no matter what walk of life.
For what it's worth I do believe that everyone is an artist. It is 'the powers that be' or 'those in ivory towers' who decided eventually what art is and what it isn't and therefore what is exhibited just as some have the power to decide what is exhibited in museums and what stays behind the scenes.
He's still an artist. |

I like him Jo. I don't pretend to be an authority on art. Like anyone else I only know what I like. I'd like to steer clear of being totally ignorant of any kind of thought though.
He directs films too and is arty in other ways. I don't believe all the people who work with him are thick or blind or spellbound.
He once said he couldn't wait to make shit art and sell it. I guess he must be sorry he said that but i'd think it was said tongue in cheek when he was much younger.
If that has always been his master plan then at least he had one and succeeded well with it.

It is said that art is in the eye of the beholder. When I behold Hirst's work I behold a huge heap of pretentious cobblers. Damn, I think I've just given him an idea for his next "masterpiece". |

No, it wasn't his piece, The Sistine Chapel works were done by Michelangelo.
I like Hist and his work, and seeing them in the flesh, they ARE impressive - books and photos don't do them justice.
The art of marketing is the now the art of this age age really. Clever and skilled brushwork employed in the past centuries is still relevant, up to a point; but I do think that art is about idea and reaction. People ramble on about "modern art" and often bring up the brickpile in the Tate saying "yeah, anyone can do that", and yes, they can, but the idea was originally one person's; and the artistic statement being made was revolutionary.

I quite like him. I can see the objection that he's pretentious but if you cant let that go in art where can you? Id hate an art world where everything was constrained by social niceties and artists worrying about looking silly. |

Personally I think that kind of art is like fashion. I.e. the same as the emperor's new clothes. If some fashion designer says wear trousers with one short leg and one long leg, some people would. If some artist ruffles a few sheets or paints some dots says it's art, people will say it's revolutionary.
Bollocks!!!! |
