Can anyone tell me if someone has one of these, does it drain some of the fluid from their brain? My son got rushed to hospital yesterday with a very bad headache, his eyes hurting and couldn't cope with lights on, they thought he might have meningitis so after the blood tests came back all clear, they did a lumbar puncture and he seemed, and felt a lot better plus could move his head. They have him on an intravenous drip of antibiotics as diagnosed a viral infection in his head |

No phone call during the night so hopefully that means good news |

A lumbar puncture is when a needle is inserted into the spine in the lumbar region which is in the lower part of the spine (top being cervical)it is done to take a secimen of bone marrow for investigation. Tony had one aged 6 in 1955 which was followed by dishes of ice cream |

I had one and it was awful in my experience worst pain I have felt ever... However I wish your son a speedy recovery. I was rushed into hospital for the same reason I had a rash a headache and was fairly unwell. I have never been seen so quickly. Saw the triage nurse who then told me to take a seat I saw her running through the doors next thing I knew I was on a trolley getting exaimed by doctors.... A very surreal experience. |

I don't think they do as Its me said above, they take the cerebrospinal fluid to test it and it then relieved the pressure on his head as I guess it drained down into his spine |

Its a shame Gloucester doesn't work as well then as when they moved him to ACU, the sister said that A&E hadn't made any notes and had to rely on what he told them they had done Not only that, a man came to see him this morning, took the medication list and hasn't come back with it, plus far too many people come to see him, so confusing as they all say different things |

my son had viral meningitis when he was 8 weeks old it is much easier to clear than bacterial and doesn't cause the same problems. Wishing your son a quick recovery x |

If you google the National Meningitis Trust you'll find lots of information about the illness (viral and bacterial) that may be useful for you. Including the problems theer can be after an infection for some people (with viral this tends to be tiredness, concentration problems etc).
Hope all goes well.

Sounds like they've caught it early enough so hope he's soon feeling better. He does need to stay away from people till it's gone to prevent risking spreading it. Have they given you any meds to prevent you getting it? My family were all given them when I had Meningitis, but mine was the bacterial form so not sure if they give it for the viral one...apparently they all had bright orange pee for a few days thanks to me!! x |

I did but it was kind of scary so stopped reading, he is bored now and they are giving him pills, if he is okay and his temperature stays down, he can come home tomorrow I shall certainly make sure he rests whether he likes it or not |

Rifampicin is only used for very close contacts for bacterial meningitis. When you say bright orange it really doesn't prepare you for the result |

So I was told...repeatedly!! Think I'd have traded bright orange pee for almost popping it any day though! Wasn't sure if it was just for the bacterial one or not as it was a long time ago, but thought I'd mention it just in case...better to ask too many questions than not enough when it comes to being healthy x |

Good to know...I had the bacterial one so wasn't sure if things were different, but it's always better to check I guess. I was out of hospital within about 10 days and I had septicaemia too so hopefully he'll soon be home x |
