"Oh, also..stay off the roads..unless you have a death wish..."

Things have improved greatly because as EEC members now, they've had to improve vehicle safety standards, MOT's, road designs etc.

The ferry across to Gozo is a short trip but well worth it.

Take a look at the main church in Gozo's main town but take sunglasses as the reflections off the ornate gold and silver decorations will blind you! It's stunning!

Gozo is best visited with a planned tour as the islands buses can be a bit haphazard, timetables wise.

Malta mainland bus services are far better.

Try to visit Mdina, the old Capital. Stunning architecture and a beautiful church in the main square.

Blue Grotto is a must, as is the capital, Valletta.

I've always fancied visiting Fort Rinella to see the huge gun. I've seen its surviving sibling in Gibraltar, so rude not see that too. Although I'd probably have to bring my mum along for the trip too because she's a huge artillery nerd.

Your mum sounds cool! Yeah I want to visit the naval gun too, I saw it on forgotten weapons and was amazed by the hydraulic loading system. Bloody ingenious!

She's the best, but hands off. She has a licence for gun powder and likes to fire the real things (maybe where I get my eccentric ways, focused interests and love of history from).

It really is, the whole system is really a feat of military technology of its period. A real wonder weapon of its day. I suppose it goes to show how important Malta and Gibraltar was to us and protecting our ambitions in that area.

Alas, it's not the same as it used to be...VERY touristy now and high rises going up everywhere. They're knocking down all the old buildings to make room. Tis sad!

Definitely Gozo... all the bays are wonderful.

Snorkelling is a must. Comino is like sardine central unless you walk to the other side for a much quieter beach.

In Malta go to the craft village in Rabat.. another lovely day out.
