Many people blame the internet for the increasing decline of the high street and the negative impact it has on public services such as libraries.
I went to the cinema in Wells last night (i love that place) and there were only six other people in that auditorioum even though the film only came out on Friday.
Does this concern you? What are you doing about it? Or do you think we should just let nature take it's course. |

Most retailers will be online only in a decade or so .
Sadly most small shops ( such as myself ) will disappear.
Perhaps town centres will dissapear , bulldoze em and plant huge forests where town centres once where .

Ah, I'm sorry that might happen. I like the small shops and in this area they seem to be fairly successful. I won't mourn the reduction in huge supermarkets and retail chains though. My ideal would be a high street populated with independent retailers leaving the big stuff out of town or on line. Note my use of "ideal" |

I think it's sad too. Not only that,8 libraries and our local cinema rely on council subsidies. As use falls subsidies have to increase. We all end up paying for the shortfall. |

We go to the odeon every week as a family. We have limitless ... costs £17.99 per month and we get our monies worth because some films are £10 to £6 to watch. And yes... sometimes we are the only ones in the screen. |

problem with that is you can't get one for the kids although I have one for myself

I try and use local shops whenever possible, but only if I'm reasonably sure they have what I want.
Get the car out, pay for parking and not find what you need? Click click delivered the next day.
I can’t see the fortunes of the bricks and mortar shops improving any time soon. |

I admit I have an Amazon addiction!
But it's usually because I'm looking for something specific.
I could spend an entire day, driving to, walking round shops & still not find what I was looking for.
I don't have time for that.
I buy as much as I can local.
I live in a village, hardware shop, butchers, bakers, Coffee shop, small independent traders.
We have a farmers market every month & I stock up there, some amazing locally produced stuff.
We visit a PYO farm several times a year.
Sadly buying everything local isn't possible though, I'd hate to see our little shops close |

This is a massive part in it.
People love to blame the Internet, and yes it is partnof the decline but it alone is not the only issue, just one of the many in a death by a thousand cuts killing off the high street and other things like cinema etc.
I'm not a massive fan of people, generally. I pick up on little things that can annoy me far too easily. I have a dislike for large crowds also, so I tend to avoid them when I can.
Cinema, drinks and popcorn etc cost about as much as a decent meal these days. Yes you can smuggle your own in but not really the point.
I have friends who have their own physical building business' and while they business is doing okay, what really sucks their income is the rates and rent etc.
The Internet is playing its part in the downfall, it is not the only cause though. |

I just don't see the point in going to the high street anymore. I can get everything online for the same price.
Why pay to use fuel, then parking charges. Including the time taken to get there and back when I can have it done in 5 minutes flat for the same price I'd get it in store? |

Like everything theres good and bad, winners and losers Its disrupted and changed the way we live, Online grocery shopping, video streaming, banking, holidays & travel for a start. Who buys CDs and games anymore, what about newspapers and their advertising?
The biggest downside I think is the loss of revenue both locally and to the taxman. Amazon is a beast, they sell everything, no one can compete with them, not even online, they will just buy you.
5G will change everything again. Education and Medicine will be the next affected. IoT. Augmented & Virtual reality will be another game changer. These days you will see a mechanic with a laptop instead of a wrench.
Bricks & Mortar outlets will eventually disappear, when Tesco decides their physical operations cost too much, they will close in a heartbeat.
People understandably love the convenience but it will lead to a loss of local services and rate paying businesses |

Libraries are great, a real social hub for any community, it's a shame they are under used. We as a society seem to becoming socially isolated, not knowing people in our street let alone our town. It's a shame. I agree that rising rent or rates on shops kills the high street. |

I haven’t been to the Cinema for many years.
The last time i went the volume was uncomfortably loud and it put me off.
I don’t like shopping as i don’t like crowds of people so the internet was great for me.
Although i use Etsy a lot which helps small individual business owners.
The only shops i go into now re Supermarkets and Charity shops for a rummage. I use Ebay lots too. |
