There are still objective facts and some things either did or didn't happen.

(Ian Hislop re Fake News)

Do we believe certain stories because we want them to be true and are not sceptical enough anymore to make our own minds up?

Does your opinion take priority over other pieces of information that may contradict it?

Just musing having watched Fake News documentary...

I think the art of critical appraisal is definitely going out of the window in favour of quick retweets, likes, shares etc without fully considering what is in front of you. It's the reason snopes exists afterall, or why Andrew Wakefield still holds sway despite being a liar and a cheat

My opinion probably does sway my views. But I'm open to evidence. Actual evidence though, not just he said/ she said and persuasively written bullshit.

Critical thinking and evaluation of sources does appear to be a fairly rare set of skills, sadly.

Lying is no longer seen as something negative as far as I can see...

I was thinking the same. Has it been eroded by fakery or was that set of skills already rare?

I think it's hard to say.

I suspect it was already rare, plus social media has made it easier for anyone to express their view. So John down the pub who believes any old shite has always existed... but now he can broadcast that all over the world. And so can Joe, Dave, Betty, and Liz at other people's pubs. They're everywhere and they reinforce each other now they're connected.

Add to that, that we are essentially able to aggregate our own news now by selecting that which reinforces our views (not just people but organisations or agencies - ie who we follow) and the mind can quickly become very one sided but with a view that it is prevalent

It's true that people will believe what they want to believe despite evidence or facts to the contrary. That's always been the case.

The real problem that we're faced with now is the complete lack of trust the common man has towards those in a position of authority and it will only get worse.

A degree of skepticism is a good thing but it's getting out of hand. The MMR scare is a good example and now we're faced with it's aftermath.

So we think it's nothing new, just a greater connectivity and decreased trust in authority...

What channel was it on? I liked Ian's other documentaries so I'd like to give it a watch.

Absolutely. There's always been gossip, scaremongering, Chinese whispers, that's part of human nature and has been rife in societies throughout the ages. Only now they spread ever faster and further and all the while the voices of authority are increasingly weakened, sometimes rightly so.

We all KNOW the truth, but some of us don't want to know/accept the truth though and anything else will do.... .....and that creates for some serious hate and self loathing....

Peace and love to you all.....

Personally I like to think my opinions are based on reasoned knowledge.

Yet gut feelings can be strong. Though I will still try to research them first before stating it as my full opinion.

I am also happy to change an opinion if I hear new information that makes very good sense to me.

By new info I don't mean gossip, social media or old fashioned media

My opinions are shaped on what I've learned and my values. The prism of my values is fairly set and will influence how I see the world. What I've learned, hopefully I can weigh it up without reference to my values (although I'm aware I'm as fallible as anyone else in that regard), before adding my values back in.
