The phrase “gone for a burton” originated with RAF flight crews during WWII. It meant to have died, or to be missing in action and be presumed dead. Burtons was a British men’s tailors, who were responsible for supplying “demob suits” - suits provided to men who had been “demobilised” from the armed forces. It’s generally thought that the phrase “gone for a burton” refers to this, suggesting that the lost crew member has gone to collect his demob suit.

"PP!
Oh finally
The main thing is I've done you. Are you up early? Late? This is an usual time to see your buns.
I'm awake now yes and I'm having coffee and cake on bed.
Well, in that case. Good moooooooooooooooooooooooorning, to thee, PP.
Image the complains I'd get.
Haha. What sort of cake did you have for breakfast?"
A nice orange sponge coated with chocolate, made by my own fair hands |

Good Morning Jim.
Sorry, I'm late!
Been a busy night, not least techie failings in central heating systems early last night but which engineers got fixed by 10pm.
One of those sodding things, but the way people go on & on & on, you'd think we'd done it deliberately!
Plus, everyone's an "expert" on how to deal with it! |
