So after years of shaving almost every single day I've decided to attempt a beard, well as of a couple of weeks ago anyway.

My question is: how long in to growing a beard do you have to make the decision whether it looks majestic and stays, or you're forever going to look like a hobo and go back to shaving?

In the middle

The best thing you can do for your beard is to look after it properly, shampoo it, oil it and get it trimmed by a good barber until it is the shape you desire

Rule of thumb is 3 weeks with most men if its not got some decent growth and looks patchy its time to give up. Well thats what I have been told a couple of times.

Why don't you save it for next month's Movember then you can do it for charity

Then if you like it keep it till Xmas and it'll be like a santa's

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Always been clean shaven here and most i've gone without was three weeks as an experiment. Too patchy and not enough coverage for anything worthwhile. Back to clean and been so ever since.

When I grew my beard it was around the 3 week mark I decided to go out and buy a beard trimmer as I decided I wanted to keep it. Its great if, like me, you cant be arsed shaving every day. I kept mine a couple of years but got fed up with it so shaved it all off. One thing I will say, when I did eventually shave it off, almost everyone commented on how much younger I looked. I say go for it, you might really suit it.

It depends if you can grow a long beard, keeping it fresh will take effort and time.

There's the 2-4 week itching period where the hair will start to curl and stab you!

Never being able to dry off your face after washing it, as the water gets trapped inside.

Using beards oils and conditioners to make it soft and smell nice as opposed to what you ate for breakfast.

Trimming the desirable lines.

For me it was way to much effort so I keep it around 3-5mm

Grow it for a minimum of 6 weeks before you decide to trim/shape it if you want a shorter designer/stubble type beard.

If you want a good full beard then you're looking at 4 months minimum.

I've done both and now have a shorter beard between 5-10mm.

I can grow a full beard in 3 weeks but can't be arsed to do the trimming and shaping, so when I do grow one, I get rid of it after a month or so.

You're growing a beard? But you'll lose all your youthful beauty!

My advice, for what it’s worth, would be to be patient. Initially it may not be as you’d hoped but may well thicken out and then you can trim it to how you like it.

I’ve never really understood all the comments about how much hassle they are to maintain. I just wash my face with head’n’shoulders when I’m in the shower and am always being told how soft and fluffy it is and just trim 2 or 3 times a year. Beats shaving any day, had it for 30 + years.

Go for it

I'm giving it a go I'll just wait a little while 'til everyone's used to the beard, then who I shave it I'll get all of those youthful comments again
