With Sunderland's away record this year and City's home record it really is a stunning scoreline, if it stays that way.

I hate stats as it always means an upset is on the cards. Utd have only won twice at Ewood in 8 visits there in recent years, but Blackburn's form this season should make it an easy three-pointer. I hope.

The No.1 priority for United will always be to pip City to whatever cup/competition both teams are engaged in. Winning the CL for the fourth time would be nice but it wouldn't be enough to to stop City fans crowing about getting the League.

Barcelona are too strong in Europe for ANY team to cope with at the moment and I really don't want to see my beloved United giving another mauling at their hands. We might have beat them 2-0 in the summer tour of America last year(and they played their strongest line up) but put them in a CL game and they're simply a different class altogether.

Well Milan just kicked him for 90 minutes last week which is the only way to stop him. Hardly sportibg but hey its a results business now. However won't get away with kicking him at the boy camp with 90,000 screaming catalans.

The fact that Barcelona can play their passing football as will be playing on an immaculate pitch, unlike field at Milan. Seen better at local park.

This Barcelona team are a lot better than the one chelsea got robbed against all those years ago now. Chelsea should have got 3 penalties! But hey iniesta showed his class

Gonna stick my neck out here and predict United to win the title... at City's ground on Apr 30th!

Here's my reasoning for it:

If United win their next four matches (QPR, Wigan, Villa & Everton) they'll be on 88 pts.

I don't believe City will beat Arsenal this weekend but they're likely to win the three games after that (West Brom, Norwich & Wolves) and that will put City on 80pts - 8 behind United.

The next game after that for both teams is against each other on Apr 30th at City's place, and if United win that match they'll go 11 pts clear of City with only 2 games remaining. It's a 6-point swing match that will seal the title mathematically for United if they beat City.

To be fair to the ref, they were penalties, although I suspect against anybody else and in another stadium they probably wouldn't have been given.

Fifa *want* Messi in their finals, he's good for the game and good for Fifa.

I'm failing to see the difference between the foul for the first penalty and the foul on Ibrahimovic in the second half. still i guess it's asking too much for a bit of consistency.

I'm having a right good titter at some of the unbiased posting on this thread.

Fifa want messi in the final, that should work out,he plays for the best team in europe,by a long way.

The ref gave barca 2 penalties, grrrrrr the refs a bastard, although they were stone wallers,

Puyol, gets away with fucking murder, what right does he have, winning all those tackles, and headers, not to mention, how often he passes the ball to a player in his own team, grrrrrr again, it shouldnt be allowed.

Only the english could consider it to be unfair, and unsporting, that a team from foreignland, have a better team than any of thiers.

the rules should be changed,to suit the english teams.

it's just not right, pity theres not a cup for whinging.

It would be a england v scotland final every year.

As a Chelsea fan I can't see us beating Barca altho if memory serves me right they've beaten us just the once at the Bridge in 5 ties the CL.Messi has never really shone at the Bridge.

If Chelsea do manage it, it won't be pretty, put Drogba up front with Mata at No10 and lump it from the back bypassing their midfield.Altho Terry with 2 broken ribs is a problem

Ah well, I can remember just escaping relegation to the old 3rd Division by two points. It's gotta be better than that..hasn't it?

That was quite a stuffing Chelsea gave Spurs. I think their CL spot could well be under threat from Chelsea AND Newcastle.

With Everton 10 points behind Chelsea as it stands at the moment, Chelsea, Spurs AND Newcastle will all have European football next year one way or another, along with Liverpool who have already qualified by winning the Carling Cup.

My understandind of it is:

Man Utd - CL

Man City - CL

Arsenal - CL

1 of Chelsea, Spurs or NUFC - CL

2 of Chelsea, Spurs or NUFC - Europa

Liverpool - Europa

That's our 4 CL spots accounted for and 3 Europa spots.

An away match in London on a cold Monday night when the match is televised?

With due respect Wigan are a relatively small club punching well above it weight.

I'd wager that the 200 fans heading north are far, far happier than 59,800 fans dispersing around the south east,

Cracking result and performance. 200 travelling to the Emirates is poor for a team needing every point to avoid the drop. You'd expect more backing tbh. Taking into account Wigans population and those that follow them and not United,City,********,Everton and also those that have holidays to take, can work back a couple of hours etc you'd expect more than that surely.

Even accounting for any pie eaters that have moved South over the years. It's really low. Had that been Sunderland which must be a similar size there'd have been a minimum of 1500 surely !

Chelsea have a good record against Barcelona and haven't lost to them since 2005/06 when Barca beat them 2:1 at the Bridge. They played each other 6 times since then and Chelsea have only conceded 3 times at the Nou Camp, whilst putting 5 past Barca home and away.

The know how to contain Barca at the Nou Camp too with 3 draws at Barcelona's home ground.

1-0 might not be enough of a lead to take with them but 1 away goal and Barca have to put 3 past them. Either the omens are with Chelsea or the stats say they are due a loss.

"Michel Platini - "Is that Tom Henning Ovrebo?"

That was a shocking display of poor refereeing, and Overbo even admitted later in an interview that anyone who knows the laws of the game should know he made mistakes. If he knows the law of the game he should have known them on the night and officiated the match correctly.

I think he resigned from international football refereeing before he was sacked from it.

Almost a great day's football today:

Arsenal/Chelsea drew

Newcastle won 3-0

..and Spurs losing 1-0 to QPR at the moment.

That puts Newcastle into 4th spot (and a Champion's League place) by 3pts if it stays as it is.

United to beat Everton tomorrow and Wolves to get at least a point from City (long shot but hey ho, ya never know), would make it a really perfect weekend of football.

El Classico tonight at 6.30, Barcelona v Real Madrid... I want Barca to stuff the shit out of RM in that one.

Don't forget that Tuesdays CL game could have a huge impact on the Premier League run in.

A Chelsea win will mean realistically Newcastle,Spurs and Arsenal will be fighting it out for one place not two. They can't rely on Chelsea losing the final. And Newcastle have to play Chelsea...Personally I can see Newcastle finishing fourth and Spurs and probably Chelsea banished to the 'plucky losers thursday night trophy'

It had never happened in the CL before that the winners hadn't qualified thru their respective league.Up until then the winners never qualified for the following year. The season after Liverpool were let back in they changed the criteria so that the winners played the next year

I think

But to answer the question..any country is only allowed four teams and as the winners automatically qualify that only leaves 3 places

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

If Chelsea win this year's CL but don't finish in the top four of the PL they qualify for the group stages of next year's CL automatically at title holders. This leaves the top three places of the PL available for CL qualification and the 4th, 5th & 6th placed teams in the PL go into the Europa League.

Usually only 5 English clubs can qualify for the CL or Europa but with Liverpool playing Chelsea in the FA Cup Final this year it means that if Chelsea win the FA Cup but also win the CL, and with Liverpool already qualified for Europa via their Carling Cup win, the 6th placed team in the PL qualifies for the Europa League.

If Liverpool beat Chelsea in the FA Cup, and Chelsea lose the CL final (if they get there), Chelsea still qualify for Europa via their PL placing, or as FA Cup losing finalists if they somehow fail to finish in the top 6 in the PL.

Am I be cunical or does it appear that FIFA doesn't want Chelsea to play in the final at Bayern Munich's ground - who, coincidentally, are in the other semi tomorrow.

Chelsea have lost Terry, Ramirez and Ivanovic for the final, if they get there which is the heart of their defence. It seems this ref is ensuring that either Barcelona go to Munich, or if they don't, Chelsea can't win it with a depleted squad.

im glad they got through.

even though i love west brom, in europe i support english teams, and even though chelsea are far from english, fair play.

just hope they can turn bayern over in the final.

incredible game, who'd have believed it, but fair play to them, well done Bolton

Wow. An overpriced, out of form ex Liverpool striker scores a huge goal for his new club making his pricetag worthwhile. Take a bow David N'Gog

Assuming Bayern get there. They are holding onto a slender 2-1 lead but tomorrow's game is at their place, and the final is there too. I don't fancy Real's chances tbh.

Nor Chelsea's whichever team they play on May 19.
