following on from the workplace tattoo thread, i need some advice

friend of my has started getting a full sleeve tattoo from a dodgy bloke who tattoos out of a garden shed, his work is so bad and he is definitely not licensed so what he is doing is also illegal

my friend had had a few hours work, but still has lots to go, luckily what he has so far looks like it can be fixed without too much hassle

do I tell my friend how bad these tattoos are and burst his bubble? my thinking is i can step in now and hopefully stop him going too far and getting totally covered in drawings that an 8 year old could do but risk looking like a wanker and just taking the piss out of his tattoo?

or do i keep quiet and let him do what he wants as he is an adult and can make his ow decisions/mistakes?

i currently have a few tattoos and so does my brother done by reputable artists who are well recognised in their particular style within the tattoo industry which we have paid a lot of money for so its not just a case of me being a over critical tit, i do have some idea of what i am talking about

any advice welcome please x

Does your friend like what has been done so far? hes the one that has to wear it and if hes happy with it then thats all that matters

Most tattooists won't touch someones bad work unless it is to recover the whole tattoo.

Tell him now before he goes for more and see if there is a tattooist near by to see if he can salvage what has been done already.

says it all.

i paid about £300 for my sleeve, and there are parts of it that are very good, and others not so. but i kinda like the rawness of it, if that makes sense.

next oen i have, however, will be very expensive, though

Well there's the truth of it!! Your mate obviously doesn't care what his work looks like if he can't see that £100 for a full sleeve is ridiculously cheap!! My last tatt cost £240 and that was pretty cheap as they go.

Tell him it looks shit cost he needs to know but i doubt it will make much difference

I take it your friend isn't blind and so he can actually see his tats..... in which case why would you need to tell him they look like the work of a child?

Is it really that bad? or just not your taste?

Either way, if you are good mates it shouldn't hurt for you to be honest about your concerns, I guess it depends on how tactful you are about it and as stated above, it's up to him if he then continues.

If he's skint, maybe a smaller good quality tattoo that could be added to in the future would be better than one huge one that he's stuck with.

honestly its that bad, search 'animal ink' on facebook, his page is there, i have no problem in naming and shaming this guy because what he is doing is 100% illegal and dangerous

Dude do the right thing, firstly let your mate know that he's getting a shitty piece of work done from a Pillock.

Secondly contact your local council and report the "scratcher" it's because of careless arsewipes like him that keeps the industry from moving forward.

I've been involved within the tattoo and piercing industry for nearly a decade and people who want to leave behind the stigma associated with tattoos should report the illegal tattoo scratchers ASAP.

Dickheads who tattoo people illegally are actually harming the industry.

He is your mate...tell him it looks bad and he is putting his health at risk...then accept his decision if he carries on...

TBh i dont think he will listen, if he was bothered he wouldn't have let the scratcher do it in the first place, but at least your conscience will be clear.

i also think there is a good deal of impatience with people wanting tattoos

agreed money can be an issue, but with waiting lists of over a year for some of the better artists, people simply won't wait and settle for second best

agree, way too cheap so his work will be cheap too, just be honest with him, mention your concerns only once and leave him to make his mind up

Sometimes it takes a mate to deliver the news no-one else will. You have tobtell him your concerns, give him your suggested solution (so you look helpful rather than critical) anc then let him make his own decision.

Be straight, be honest, tell him you eill still think it looks shit in 10 years time.

Failing that, burn the shed down!(joke)

Scratchers are a health hazard. Report him.

£100 for a sleeve? I'm not sure that would even cover sterile materials and ink.

More importantly than the work being like a childs drawings

Tattooing in a shed, not licensed, unsterile area, probably no decontamination equipment for cleaning instruments and needles, probably not using single use ink.

My advice would be to get a HIV / HepB test.
