Keeping it Peel
Jump to: Newest in thread
Friday 11th October marks 15 years since John Peel's last broadcast.
He was always a familiar voice in my house and introduced me to some of the best and quite frankly some of the most bizarre music I have ever heard. I dearly miss his Festive 50!
In honour of the grumpy old man himself, spin us a record. Right time, wrong speed if necessary.

"Has to be Teenage Kicks, surely?"
There it is... A playlist of 1 sounds a fitting tribute
And yes I loved all the bizzare music from his show to. Definitely the reason my taste is so broad and eclectic now |

So many bands and songs I only got to know through far too many years listening to John Peel.Obviously The Fall, but many far more obscure artists too.Personal favourites are the Wolfhounds, Yeah Yeah Noh, Ted Chippington,The Nightingales, I could go on for ages, but one particular song that stands out is Preposterous Tales by I Ludicrous.Anyone remember this? |

So many great artists, though I never quite got into The Fall so much.
The 20+ minute session version of The Orb's Huge Ever Growing Brain That Pulsates From The Heart of The Ultraworld at one end to Her Jazz by Huggy Bear at the other with some random Dutch techno in the middle. |

I was in the car ferrying my niece somewhere when it was announced on the radio that he had had a heart attack in Peru. My then 4 year old niece said 'I love Art Attack' I couldn't tell you if I was laughing or crying. |

As a northern boy from Thatchers waste land of the 80’s, I’d never heard of JP until a Peel Sessions cassette was left on our kitchen table owned by one of mums friends! I played it until it broke and it’s owner brought me two more!!
Enlightenment prevailed!
RIP JP. x |

I forget the author but there’s a wonderful book based on the playlist record forms that JP filed after each BBC show so that royalties could calculated. It makes for a fascinating insight into just how eclectic his shows were and how it changed over the years.
The book also describes how a lot of individuals and bands who’s careers he helped launch seem to have been incredibly ungrateful (Marc Bolan and Nirvana), and yet others who he denounced as rubbish early on went on to become friends and to champion his extended stay on Radio 1 (Blur).
My song nomination: the Peel Sessions version of What difference does it make? by The Smiths. Far more furious than the album one. |

I recently got hold of a USB tape player and spent a fun afternoon ploughing through a bunch of unmarked cassettes not touched since the early 90s. Now and then it would be something I’d taped off John Peel’s show, and that familiar voice would fade in after the track. So pleased to hear him by surprise like that after far, far too long! |

Ah that's great. I once had someone record Home Truths for me. I still have the cassette just nothing to play it on. I think I might have to find a tape deck. |

Carter USM- Rubbish
Not only cos he probably rather liked it, but because it has his dulcet tones eminating from it about half way through (so what do you think of the music so far?).
I do like listening to his son on 6music and think he does a good job of following on a little from his old man too |

"There’s a great website called Rocklist.net
All of John peels festive 50’s are listed there, it’s great to make them into a playlist ??"
I think another mad music rabbit hole is about to claim me. Since I started this thread I've been introduced to some tracks I'd never heard of. That was the beauty of him! |

Good plan. Although I've loved peeking through the ones I remember listening to in real time. |
