I heard Pizza Express bought Franco Manca because they were threatened by that model... Thought they were doing OK.
How WHSmiths are still in business is beyond me. |

They’ve a 1.1 billion pound debt of which 46 million has to be paid back by feb 2020. Doesn’t look good |

With my job I travel to the same towns, cites and streets each year and everytime I see more shops closed down and they all tell me its because they can't compete with the Internet and also shops like Tesco and Morrisons who sell everthing under one roof.
It's sad but in time our high streets will be like ghost towns.
They already are in some parts. |

Thomas Cook are still trading in off shore country’s , so they’ve set all their debt to the uk gone bankrupt BUT!! Here’s the but, jurisdiction doesn’t include off sure accounts so they can go bust but still trade |

WH Smith have pretty much given up on the high street but they are very strong overseas in airports and have posted strong figures. They have 100 airports in 30 countries tied up and signed a new deal earlier this year with airports in the US. Share price is currently strong.
They may look like a bag of shit on the high street - My local one is always empty - but as a global retailer they are doing OK. |

WH Smith have pretty much given up on the high street but they are very strong overseas in airports and have posted strong figures. They have 100 airports in 30 countries tied up and signed a new deal earlier this year with airports in the US. Share price is currently strong.

Argos are in trouble too. Some have closed down and we’re recently bought out by Sainsbury’s. I think they are giving up and maybe going online. Such a shame online is killing our high streets. |

My Business thrived taking goods to areas where they were not available & then the internet came along & suddenly I was competing with the world, The bigger companies could sell cheaper than me because of their buying power & ability to keep costs down in relation to their turnover. Competing online is not an option for me due to the fact that I buy online. |

It's the end of high street retail to be honest. The Internet has taken over and nothing will reverse this now. Very few can compete with Ebay and Amazon.
Even overpriced pizza places like Pizza Express can't compete with the domination of Just Eat etc now
The only business that is safe now is barbers/hairdressing until they invent one of them hair cutting machines like in chitty chitty bang bang |

Well above if you read was said he couldn’t sell much cheaper!! So me personally would rather buy from selfridges or Harrods. As I have just now for my daughters Alexander McQueens. If as you say you can’t give much discount I’d much rather pay £100 more from a reputable company |

All that's happened for the last few years is milking maximum profit from the high street stores for exec bonuses and shareholders while they can.

You’ve pm messaged me asking why I brought Harrods or selfridges into the equation. Well if I’m spending £300 or more and you can’t sell less and are genuine I’m going to spend an extra £60-100 from a reputable source!! You did say early you can’t sell cheaper!!! And me personally want quality |

I think comparing a small independant trader to Harrods and selfridges is a bit extreme.
But anyways some of the big boys can sell products for less than the price that small traders can buy them from the wholesalers.
Hence why a small business can't compete with them. |

I just thought that 50k sounded like a lot & wondered how many people could afford it, Especially if they are coming here with the intention of making more than they would back home. As someone that lives in Berlin, where there is a MASSIVE Turkish community, they are a complicated bunch to say the least...
Firstly you've got Turks that identify as Kurds and there's often tension between them and the Turks that identify as Turkish.
Theres huge criminal elements in both of these communities and a lot of these businesses may well be helping launder money but usually it's extended family connections abroad and generally speaking they're usually pretty decent people.
If I was a Turkish man with wealth, I'd definitely be looking to get it out of Turkey and that's not an easy task. In most cases the money that's being washed through these businesses is not funding war or crime but theres always a few in any community that do this...
If they feel welcomed in their adopted home then the majority of them are a credit to the local community!

"Argos are in trouble too. Some have closed down and we’re recently bought out by Sainsbury’s. I think they are giving up and maybe going online. Such a shame online is killing our high streets. "
Argos were very different to other retailers and could perhaps have expanded to have done something like Amazon many years ago - with foresight, they could have been Amazon instead, being an online and retail indexed/catalogue product seller of any stuff. I've not used them in ages but it would have been preferable to Amazon.

As long as Pizza Hut doesn’t follow suit I’ll be ok. Although the salad bar is crap these days.
Managing cash flow is hard these days, especially as people are worried and are cutting back. Business models that were good 2 years ago will make a business broke. So I expect to see many more big names go bust, not before bonuses are paid out of cause. |

I'm surprised that Game and HMV are still open, I thought HMV was going to close years ago.
Didn’t hmv go into administration last year? I’m sure it was sold over seas. Probably some bigger picture "

Actually I can foresee things turning upside down. The giants have massive overheads in rates, wages and security which the small independents don't have.
There are still a few independent hardware stores around that are undercutting the likes of B&Q or Focus on most things, yet still manage to make a living. B&Q and Focus have been in trouble for a long time, both have shut their stores near me, only leaving the independent traders in the area. If Focus have not gone already they can't be far off, B&Q are lucky to have survived this long. |

When i buy stock, Its not in the quantity that a big business can. They are able to get anything manufactured for them & even own their own factories. B&Q are owned by Kingfisher & They wholesale to many other small businesses. Their turnover ratio to the rent, rates, wages & tax that they pay is a million times better than mine. No small business can compete against a large one. When they go bust, They lose their tax liability & that`s more than I could earn in a lifetime. The ceo always makes a massive chunk of money when it goes bust. We just lose our houses. |

They still lose money hand over fist because of the huge salaries at the top. Not to mention the losses they make on shop lifters and staff on the fiddle. |

They are not losing money with huge salaries, That`s how you get big chunks of money out of your own business Without showing huge dividends. If you pay all of the profits in salaries then the company hasn`t made a profit. |

HMV will stay for a while if they decide to sell just media and stop diluting what they sell but ultimately they are fucked.

"Argos are in trouble too. Some have closed down and we’re recently bought out by Sainsbury’s. I think they are giving up and maybe going online. Such a shame online is killing our high streets.
Argos were very different to other retailers and could perhaps have expanded to have done something like Amazon many years ago - with foresight, they could have been Amazon instead, being an online and retail indexed/catalogue product seller of any stuff. I've not used them in ages but it would have been preferable to Amazon.

I'm surprised that Game and HMV are still open, I thought HMV was going to close years ago.
