Washing Your Hands

So I got pulled on this.

When washing your hands, do you wash your thumbs?

Having never thought of it before, got pulled over it, wasn't paying as much attention as I should to the thumbs.

So yesterday, grabbing a cheeky McD hot chocolate, using the toilets, noticed a paramedic washing his hands (next to me) and he didn't wash his thumbs either!

So mentioned it, and yeah, he said "Always forget them"

Also, do you have the anti-bac gel in the house for the after wash?

Yes I wash my thumb's but I don't use anti bacterial gel unless I'm visiting a hospital or gp surgery or I'm somewhere with no soap. I have a couple of friends who use anti bacterial gel quite a lot. My observation is that they are ill far more frequently than me

I work in healthcare so been given the proper training about washing hands from our infection control officer when I started I wash my hands a lot and use the alcohol gel many times a day. Always clean my desk before I start my shift. And wash my hands as soon as I get home from work or town. It's a ritual I never forget.

local, but not too local

Thumbs get an extra special wash if they’ve been slipped somewhere they shouldn’t in the throws of passion

The research shows we generally don't wash the thumb on our dominant hand, we tend to wash and leave it poking out and getting missed

I'm an avid handwasher but learnt the thumbs and wrists thing through working with food.

But I'm notorious for wet hands if I think the towel is a bit grubby .

When my husband had no immune system I was given a very useful leaflet about how to handwash which I still follow. So yes, I wash my thumbs.

Hiding in the shadows

My first career was in catering.

First thing we were shown, how to wash your hands. Properly.

The head chef was a stickler for hygiene in his kitchen.

35yrs later, I still do everything I was taught

We were just wondering how you wash your hands without doing your thumbs. Our Saturday morning has rarely been as exciting as we both tried hand washing without thumbs

If people don't wash their thumbs, what colour do they turn ?

.

The joys of growing up in a medical family involved being taught how to properly wash hands, thumbs et al. I still do it now. How do you not wash your thumbs though? I'm going to try today.

Yes I wash my hands, including thumbs, thoroughly. I don’t just scare my hands with water.

I’m always amazed at how many people don’t wash their hands the dirty devils!

I (Luke) used to have a friend who was a nurse and she once told me I wash my hands like a medical professional I'm so fastidious.

Hannah told me recently to wash my hands before doing something in the kitchen. I did them in my normal way but it was so thorough she thought I was taking the piss.
