I invited my friend over to chill out with me, instead of our normal sexual escapades.
I was going to put on Generation Kill, a television series that follows 1st US Recon Marines in Iraq.
Instead I opted for 'Kajaki'. Its probably the most tension filled bit of cinema I've ever seen in my life and based on a horrific true story.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen it? What were your thoughts?

Not seen it or heard of it but have filed it away for future viewing possibility.
Band Of Brothers has to be one of the most powerful series I have watched not only about war but generally - it was probably one of the first series/films that mostly did away with the glossy view of war and pulled no punches - didn't present it as the Americans winning the war single handed and was brilliantly written and played out.
Pacific wasn't quite as good but still worth a watch.
War films have always been a viewing pleasure for me - probably inspired by my Grandad having been a Para during the war and regaling me with stories as a kid and watching films with him. Too many favourites to mention them all - but enjoy anything from the gritty realism of Platoon or Saving Private Ryan or even things like Carve Her Name With Pride and In Which We Serve through to the more escapist Kelly's Heroes, Dirty Dozen or Where Eagles Dare |

Great selection dude. Band of brothers is probably my favourite, but feel the same about Pacific as you do. Good but Meh in comparison.
It's way over the top, but Black Hawk Down is one of my favourites as well.
I despise war, but I do love the films.
Letters from Iwo Jima, another good watch.

Letters From Iwo Jima is the flip side to Flags Of Our Fathers I think - same story from the Japanese perspective - have seen the latter but not the former - must correct that.

Whoever directed it knew the British Armed Forces very well, the way in which they communicate with each other, in moments of peace and tranquility, or not.
One of the very few films I've seen that done accurately. |

You're right about Flags of our Fathers, I was very impressed Cling Eastwood decided to show both sides of that battle. Most films pick a side.

The Vietnam parts were, the Basic Training parts were in ATR Bassingbourne.
Cheaper to fly all the crew to the UK than film it in the US apparently. |

Blackhawk Down was a good film, but the book was so much better. Still one of my favourite films though.
Really ‘enjoyed’ Kajaki and The Siege of Jadotville.
13 hours, The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is probably up there with favourites. If you haven’t seen it, you really should.

I read the story about Kajaki a while ago in a book called, 3 Para This is war. The soldiers were deployed there to guard Kajaki dam against attacks by the Taliban. Ironically, the minefield the soldiers found themselves trapped in wasn't left by the Taliban. The minefield was left by the Russians around 30 years before |

I've seen it. Excellent dramatization of an awful incident. MoD weren't pleased with it, so it was likely accurate.
Generation Kill is very good because it sticks closely to the book.
Favourite war documentary has to be The World At War. It set the standard Ken Burns successfully met with The Civil War and The Vietnam War.
Favourite war tv series? Band of Brothers just edges it, for me.
Favourite war film? Harder to pick. Saving Private Ryan is excellent but it's not alone in that. |

Band of Brothers, Pacific and Saving Private Ryan all have same production crew.
Generation Kills first two or three episodes mirror my own experience in Iraq, we were in same camp as 1st US Recon Marines. They came across EXACTLY how they do in the Series. Even saw 'Manimal' Running round Camp Matilda in full NBC gear.. Moron
Impressed, not many people I know have seen it.
Our tour took a detour after first three episodes as we stayed in Basrah Province. |

Actually another series I used to enjoy but my memory of it may be clouded by the mists of time and the fact it was on late on a Friday or Saturday night during the years when I had usually had a beverage or two by the time it was on was Tour Of Duty about Vietnam - had Paint It Black as the theme tune (which is enough to have made it worth watching and about all I can remember of it too!!) |

Not seen that.. I love the Vietnam era films. Maybe because it wasn't our fight (for once). The soundtracks.. my favourite music.. Creedence Clearwater, Hendrix, Stones etc.
Wasn't a fan of Blackhawk Down using Hendrix in their helicopter scene near the start, it's out of time and the rest of the soundtrack is very good and very moody. Hendrix just feels, forced? Love the film though, even though it's very over the top. About the level of over the top I can handle though.
Any film where people fire heavy machine guns one handed from the hip, or take cover behind a tin shed and come out swinging (Rambo) or have seemingly infinate ammunition.. I just can't enjoy. |

I was going to put on Generation Kill, a television series that follows 1st US Recon Marines in Iraq.
Instead I opted for 'Kajaki'. Its probably the most tension filled bit of cinema I've ever seen in my life and based on a horrific true story.

Thought the road was a bit boring.
Fury had its moments but annoyed me with the write up at the beginning only mentioning Americans. They weren't the only ones who suffered in the lovable but ultimately shit sherman tank  |

This I lost a very good mate and the strongest guy I'd ever met, when I served. He stayed when I left the services, saw some really terrible stuff and unfortunately took his own life. Drinking with your mates, who've been through the shit together is therapeutic for awhile. However leave the Army, in a place on your own with no mates around, I just wished he'd called. |

Tell me about it, I suffered with guilt for being a part of it all.. 10yrs.. struggled to understand why a lot of my mates didn't openly suffer, displaying rage, anger etc.
Till my friend, who happened to be a councillor told me to take a personality test and read the summaries.
Everything fell into place after that. I talk because it's in my nature to do so. I feel others pain quite acutely, because it's in my nature to do so. I'm lucky I guess, but it felt like a curse at the time. I dont really suffer with mental health because I am a talker, but those ten yrs i bottled a lot up and it almost broke me.
I fear for my friends and comrades who arent a hobby little chatterbox like I am. |

I've lost two armed forces friends now to suicide. One even made national news (only because he served with Prince Harry at one point ).
Army guys aren't really the best to talk to about this shit, they all bottle it up too.
I wasn't even invited to funeral, which hurt and brought it all back.
I've since ditched a lot of my friends and left all the armed forces groups I was a part of.
My left leaning nature and willingness to challenge peoples right leaning, blood lusty, nationalistic views doesnt go down well as you can imagine.
They want to silence one of the few voices who actually cares about their welfare. Which saddens me.

Agreed.
I think it comes from the desperate need to believe that they didn't lose friends and family for nothing. That they died for a reason and it was an honurable and worthy death.
Anything else and their world begins to collapse around them, they lash out in anger. Throwing disrespect, apologist, snowflake insults into the conversation.
It's harder for them to brand me those things, given I was there.
I tried to express how I felt about my guilt, connect with other exforces who may feel the same way. Only, it was met with utter contempt by my peers. So much for the forever family that ex Forces community is supposed to have. Only if your face fits apparently.
There only a handful I've kept as friends since those days. Real friends, not 'Forces Fwends' Men who care about their 'Mucka'.
I tried to rejoin the FB Groups recently, but they're all freedom of speech fundamentalist type pages, where support for the Tommy Robinsons of this world are celebrated. Yet, I'm not free to challenge Nationalistic, Imperialist politics, or the reasons for going to war. Pointing out the ridiculousness of the politicians who send us, having shared in, or an active board member of the worlds largest armaments company.
As for Remembrance Day.. "Lest we Forget?". We forgot the day after World War 1 ended, what an insult to all who lost their lives on every side.
Every day is Remembrance Day for me, for squaddies and civvies on every side of every conflict. Pawns manipulated for power.

It was very good. Ran for three seasons on Ch.4 (I think). Remarkably, it remained watchable despite the F-word never being used once. Took a very nuanced view of the Vietnam War, too - like the films that inspired it. |

Made you think about how - even though you could never truly imagine it - it must've been to wake up every morning, as a German soldier knowing that you couldn't win; that surrender to the Russians was a worse option than getting killed - and having to do that on shit rations, knowing your family back home were getting bombed.

What can I say? Just watched Kajaki and incredibly moved by it - enjoy is absolutely not the right word but if you want to see a film about the reality and horror, and indeed senselessness at times, of war that encapsulates what men and women do in the name of their countries then I urge you to watch it.

Yes, enjoy isn't the right word for Kajaki.. It is a very powerful film though and deserving of lots more credit than it's been given.
Perhaps because it's so good at spreading the message of how senseless all the violence is.. that it's not received the same media coverage other war films that tend to glorify conflict do? I dunno..
I got the same numb feeling after and do confess that I was quite teary at some points of the film, especially the ending. Where the reality really begins to dawn on you. |

I liked Windtalkers as well. Bit cheesy in places, but most Hollywood films are. I knew nothing about the history behind it before watching it. |

had to look it up to see if i spelt his name right herr wrote the narration for "apocalypse now " and "full metal jacket"

I've not read it, but I have heard of Herr and will keep an eye out for his book in my local shops. |

There's a book on Stalingrad called Enemy at the Gates which is like a horror story. The film is based on a novel called War of the rats. It's a good read |
