Unfortunately Wishy, American style politics is just what we have got. We don't vote for the parrty, we vote for the leader. We don't have a left or right, all of the parties cluster in the midle. The sytem is awash with people paying for policy and using lobyists to amend policy. We know my leanings, but it's not just the Tory party, it's everyone. Our system just follows the yanks by 10 to 15 years. The significant diference between us and the yanks is that they are using their low interest rates to borrow huge quantities of money to pump sta%rt their ecconomy (creating 2-3% growth rates) while we are cutting back creating a stagnant high inflation low employment ecconomy.... | |||

A good politican is someone who can walk into any sphere of government and use his or her abilities to organise to get the job done, as well as play the precarious balancing act that is forever looking to stick a knife in his back while smiling to his face. The fact that most retiring senior civil servants from HMRC end up as consultants at firms like PWC is evidence for the proposition that they must know something. What's hilarious about NHS reorganization is that doctors are not managers. They're doctors. Nurses aren't administrators; they're nurses. Professional managers are being pushed out of the NHS and PCTs to be replaced by doctors, who, knowing they're not experts, will buy in managerial skills from consultancies, who are hiring former PCT managers on increased salaries and charging commission. That's how privatization and consultancy based service provision works; you take a limited pot of money and spend some of it on 'private sector expertise' and loudly trumpet that everything will be all right while you're busy closing wards, cutting junior staff wages and increasing waiting times to make up for the money you're spending on consultants. | |||

There have been a lot of brave MPs, many of the post war crop (eg Super Mac) were WWI veterans or (eg Ted Heath) WWII veterans........
In mho much of parliament's irrelevance comes from the fact that most of the current crop are career politicians. PPE at Oxbridge, then a parliament as a SPAD and then a marginal then a safe seat.
None of them have done anything other than be in politics (with the occasional exception for a lawyer).
There are some notable exceptions (such as the Black Watch Colonel who is a tory) but Cameron, the Milibros, Ed Balls et all have done nothing else and hardly inspire confidence.......
Do we really expect our Defense Secretaries to be ex-forces personnel, or our Chancellors to be qualified accountants, or our Health Supremos to be time-served Doctors?
We'd quickly run out of qualified personell to fill these positions given that we're quick to sack someone for making the tiniest of mistakes.
A good politican is someone who can walk into any sphere of government and use his or her abilities to organise to get the job done, as well as play the precarious balancing act that is forever looking to stick a knife in his back while smiling to his face.

Career parliamentarians are changing the commons. 30 years ago very few MP wanted to be Ministers, the only ones who did were the careerists. This meant that very few MPs had a fear of disagreeing with the party whip and the commons was a place of politics men. With the overwhelming preponderance of career politicians, there is far to little argument because you can't defy the whip if you have any ambitions. We have ended of with the politics of the place men. As to the management approach, well if you are happy with bland people who have no ideologies when keep the politicians as managers approach. If on the other hand, you want a choice in your political party (which, imho, would also lead to an increase of notice being taken of politics) there needs to be a real ideological difference between the parties. You can't get that when they all come from the same families, the same schools and the back grounds..... | |||
