I advise against it until healthy rounded, varied controlled eating is established
Iv been practising both for near 30 years

I'd advise against any kinds of diets unless prescribed by a doctor.
The best and easiest way to lose weight (assuming that's his goal) is accurate and honest calorie tracking to achieve a daily deficit. |

"Yes we have already read loads online but you never know if these are real stories or not
Luckily we not diabetic"
I know a few people who have done it and it’s worked. I did it for a quick weight loss but don’t think it could be a lifetime thing for me. |

I considered the Keto diet, however I’ve lost half a stone just by cutting down on the carbs and fasting a couple of days a week. So for example I used to have four toast in the morning, now I have two, keep my dinners to wraps and an apple then a warm chicken salad for my tea. The fasting would be missing the toast in the morning, Monday and Thursday for the fast just before and after the weekend.
I can still eat pasta etc...but just once or twice depending on exercise as I do go out running |

My personal recommendation is to go and see a nutritionist. There are loads around. I did that a few years ago and the results have been well worth the investment. We talked about what I wanted to achieve and she gave me an approach and loads of meal ideas that have had excellent results.
If you get a decent one they will be able to answer all your questions about Keto and lots of other things. You can get get something that is much more tailored to what you want instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, plus you can ask questions and get direct answers.

One slight amendment if I may: look for a dietician rather than a nutritionist. Dietician is a legally protected term, meaning they have to be properly qualified and registered. Whereas anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. |

"We only want to lose a couple of stone each
Like the sound of low carbs but bang goes my morning weetabix and my crackers"
Carbs are the most common thing to cut down on... I have porridge with fruit.. And sometimes granary toast...
But everyone is individual..bit I started walking, then running, now run.. Every day or so.. Still no skinny mini, but not 20st anymore...
You will find something that works for you. |

Keep the weetabix, oats would be better , ditch the crackers
Aim for slow consistent maintaibable changes and loss
Keto works , to my mind it should be treated as an advanced nutritional strategy used once one understands their own bodies reaction to all foods
For normal people wanting safe effective permanent fat loss , avoid keto , and really enjoy preparing and cooking your own delicious nutritious balanced meals inc weetabix |

Find out the evidence upon it, from independent scientific research that's published in non-commercial sources.
Specifically, focus on how much weight loss is sustained in the longer term. Of it's not that well sustained, it could just contribute to yo-yo dieting, which is not healthy.
Combined exercise and dietary changes are often more effective

Don't diet.
Eat normal, fresh, unprocessed foods, exercise and all will be well.
The human race is alive and kicking without diet fads and diet books paying for someone else's seaview villa.
Don't be a mug. |

I tried going keto for a while and it did work to an extent but I soon got fed up with it. I go with intermittent fasting a couple of times a year when I want to shed some body fat. Although IF is not for everyone, it definitely works for me. |

"Me personally has been on and off diets for years as I’m never happy with the way I look
I prefer low fat
Cutting out all the crap
Sausage rolls....pies...biscuits...chocolate etc"
All of those would be out on a keto diet too. Lean meat, salad and veg with some seeds and nuts and dairy is a perfectly fair diet. |

I’ve done keto for about 8 years now, gone from size 24 to 14. It works, it’s sustainable and I am as healthy as can be, zero health problems.
Next time you buy anything low fat please look at the nutritional info specifically the sugar content then compare to a full fat version. Sugar is the problem in my humble opinion.

It's good for short term weight loss. Did it for a bit and lost loads of weight! The problem comes when you have a couple of days off with a night out and a cheat day then the scales go mental and say you have put loads on which then makes you feel a bit shit so you don't do back to it. I think as others have said stick to a normal diet and a bit more exercise. An app called my fitness pal is good as you can work out your daily calories and input what you have had eaten and shows you what you have left so you can work it out. Good luck with whatever you try. |

This is about the best advice for food. I dont diet (I'm lucky) but I kind of eat keto anyway. I dont buy anything processed. Everything I eat is cooked from fresh, recognisable ingredients. I rarely eat bread or pasta, and try and get any carbs from root veggies, though mon-fri my diet consists of protein (either chicken or pork), leafy greens and fruit.
Seeing a dietician to work out what your base calorie rate should be would help, they should be able to show you how much your intake should be (most peoples portion sizes are way off).
Dont worry about the numbers on the scale. Having a healthy, balanced eating lifestyle with the correct nutrients in the correct portion sizes, your body will head towards the correct weight for you.

"Oh, the calorie-in, calorie-out hypothesis has been totally debunked, human thermodynamics are way more complicated than that."
I'm afraid that is incorrect
Human thermogenisis of its fuel is indeed complex , it indeed alters its energy expenditure depending upon its fuel
However bluntly put , eat 2000 cals , burn 2100 and you will either lose fat mass, glycogen and or muscle to the value of 100 cal
Eat 2000 cal and only burn 1900 you will either add glycogen, fat or muscle in combination to the value 100 cal
What one eats will affect the cals out , but the thermodynamics is always the same
Obviously very few people are aware of how their metabolism alters with food type , intake and timing
Trust me I'm near 6 percent b fat , and nudging lower I'm acutely aware of every nuance and effect of foods drinks on my journey
I've been practising keto, carb control, intermittent fasting and nutrition control for 30 years
Balanced whole variety diet , portion control
Keto is advanced leave it for the obsessed , of which I may be one

And the other factor is insulin resistance of course. People who are insulin resistant or type II diabetic may indeed have to strictly control carbs to regain control of their metabolism, calories counting alone will often not help them. |

Keto is my go-to when I feel I need to strip my body fat back a little bit. I have to cycle on and off it though for a couple of months at a time as it’s almost too effective for me. The fat (and weight) just falls off me and I’m very rarely trying to actively lose weight, just fat, and if I stuck with it longer than that I feel like I’d disappear!!
I don’t struggle living on it on a daily basis when I’m doing it though and I’d say it’s worth having a go. Everyone’s different though so ultimately it just comes down to what works for you and you won’t know that without trying. |

I do, as many as I can. Did you do the Real Food Rocks festival this year?
The thing I love the most about this way of life is my vastly improved health and the longevity and wellness it will add to my life, my chances of getting all those diseases associated with advancing age have lowered immensely.
Add to that the freedom from all food issues, understanding that hunger doesn’t need to be fed, awesome food and a body to die for, I won’t be changing at all.
I’ve been purely carnivore since April and my health is unbelievable.

Don't know if my diet is strictly Keto ? I am type 2 diabetic
My typical daily diet is a 3 egg bacon omelette and a mug of tea for breakfast.
Lunch is a tuna, salmon or chicken salad consisting of iceberg lettuce ,spring onion, tomatoes, cucumber, radish, half an avocado, a few olives dressed with a little mayonnaise.
Dinner is normally a portion of meat or fish with fresh veg (no root veg or potatoes) home made sauces and I replace pasta with courgette spaghetti and rice with cauliflower rice, chips or potatoes replaced with butternut squash.
Dessert is normally a few blackberry's and strawberry's with a spoonful of double cream .
I have lost 2 stone since the beginning of June and my sugar levels are now down to an average of 6.5 from 14 John |

Personally I did a low carb diet and lost lots but it wasn't sustainable. I switched to clean eating, measuring macros and cut out all processed foods and lost 25kg in total. I now maintain it with an indulgence day a week.
The truth is it shouldn't be a diet but a lifestyle. I avoid processed things and fuel my body for what it needs. Carbs to give me energy for exercise the day before exercise, proteins to recover from exercise and fruit, veg and fats for nutrients and hormonal balance. |

The eatwell plate is what makes people sick. Try actually finding out what happens to fructose when it’s eaten and eating all hose carbs and high sugar, low fat alternatives will make you sicker and sicker. |

Most athletes don’t use carbs anymore, fruit is metabolised by the liver and raises trigs. |

I looked into the fructose thing. Most of the research seems to be regarding artificial HFCS fructose laden foods, which generally include other sugars.
Essentially your body has to turn fructose into glucose to use it as energy. Haven't found anything yet on difference between natural sources such as fruit compared to HFCS. Topsy, if you have any links I would be grateful if you could send or post them.
I am aware that a lot of fruit contains high levels of fructose, and may affect insulin levels, but for most people I think the other nutritional benefits (vitamins and fibre) of moderate fruit consumption offset the fructose content. |

Google it, there is stuff called keto bread but I think calling it bread is stretching it a bit.
I've cut back on carbs recently but still gave a slice of bread each day. I think if you look at the site Topsy recommended earlier you can devise a way of eating that suits you and your lifestyle. |

It amazes me how extreme people's reactions are to keto. I'm 10 days into it and really enjoying it so far. Lost 6 pounds. I know the first stone is generally water, but I've seen the results over 12 weeks and I think this is the 'quick fix' for me.
Longer term, I'd like to get back into weight lifting and 'paleo' (fairly similar to keto, but with a focus on 'clean', unprocessed foods and less restrictions on carbs/protein - it's quite a sensible and balanced way of eating). |

We’ve been lied to about fat for the last 20 years or so, if you see “low fat” on something it usually means shit that’ll make stupid people fat, usually full of sugar
I’m enjoying lots of full fat unpasteurised milk and full fat butter all from grass fed cows and almost back in my 32” Levi’s ! |

That's incredible! Can I ask how many pounds/waist inches you've lost and over how long? |

Diets generally contribute to yo-yo dieting patterns, which often dent confidence as well as help to reinforce your body's pattern of (possibly) losing some weight and then gaining that, maybe even more weight afterwards.
They often rely too much on willpower, which - as a limited resource that we have - generally isn't the ideal power for weight loss.
I'd only pursue a diet that has extensive scientific evidence behind that's published in credible professional journals and wouldn't just be the creator's 'research', without any publication in the professional literature.
It's also worth awareness of any health impacts that specific diets have too. You probably won't be under medical supervision whilst dieting, so you'll potentially be putting yourself at risk.
The longer-term harm can come though, from having yet another experience where you fail. Those experiences help to form habits, harm self-esteem and confidence and are well worth avoiding like the plague. Start your journey when it's the right time for you, which may be influenced by seasons/weather. This can be better than being under pressure to get to a point, such as a holiday, wedding etc, that can raise stress, when it may not be the best thing to motivate you. |

Often food retailers' and producers' claims need to be taken with huge scepticism, as there's often insufficient control of many labels and terms used for food and nutrients. |

"Silly subject in a swingers forum I suppose but has anyone in here been on the Keto diet?
Hubby wants to try it but I find it hard t9 get my head round eating things with fat when I tend to stick to low fat
Any advice or tips would be brilliant
Xxx
I advise against it until healthy rounded, varied controlled eating is established
Iv been practising both for near 30 years

Almost 4” and about 10-12kg over 3 years. I yo-yo a bit because in winter I lift heavy so actually put on weight but in summer do more running. |

Tried it, stuck with it for 6 weeks,4200 calories a day on keto isn't feasible really.
Not optimal for powerlifting/strength gains, gym performance plummeted. |

We all know the mantra: calories in, calories out; eat little and often; eat lean; not too much fat; not too much this; not too much that... I guess it all boils down to what works for you. We're all different, whether that's down to lifestyle, fitness goals, tastes or any other needs. You know your own body and you don't need anyone telling you what's right for you. And I am loving keto right now! |
