Scientists say that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches in the world!
I find it hard to believe. What do you think? |

Look at the distances between stars and there are supposed to be more than grains of sand on earth.
If that's right, there must be no end to the universe. Or a very long way. |

The common theory that the universe was created by "The Big Bang" would indicate that there is an end to the universe, and although the universe is still expanding, it isn't growing in mass... just moving away from the epicentre of the explosion.

Stars seem few until you get in a pitch dark field with a telescope and more and more keep appearing. Plus we only see as far as the eye or telescope can see |

The universe is growing as it expands, new suns are born all the time but likewise suns die. A good percentage of the suns we see with the naked eye every night are not there anymore. |

The number of grains of sand on Earth, the number of stars in the sky and the size of the universe is so staggeringly large it's pretty difficult to get your head around any of them. It's not surprising that trying to compare two of them in your head is difficult. I'm prepared to take the word of astrophysicists on this. Luke |

if you get a minute, ring 'Go compare' and ask them the universe star number and grains of sand number..might stop him singing and crashing into logs..ta very muchly..live long and prosper |

That is an easy statement, universe is infinite so an infinite number of stars. gains of sand on all the beaches is finite - infinite is greater than finite so by default has to be |

Comprehend and scientists could of got it wrong.
Just try and count all the grains of sand in a bucket, nevermind on all the beaches on earth. |

They can measure (estimate) beaches by volume and density as the can do with stars. But it is just theoretical any way can't actually measure anything without end universe/cosmos is without end

People just can't comprehend the vast size of the universe. Yes there will be more stars than grains of sand on earth. What you can see in the sky at night is such a small percentage of what's out there. |

Monty python's "Galaxy song" will provide you with some answers
As for how they calculate the number of grains I'm picturing some poor grad student counting individual grains from a bucket and then weighing them saying 50000 in a kilo then spilling some and having to start again
Are they also including the sand under the sea or is it beach exclusive
Also if you are in possession of or know someone with night vision goggles take a look at the sky on a clear night away from light pollution it's amazing |

I'm not going to do my own calculations, so I'm really happy that they have done so and to accept the conclusion.
There probably aren't that many grains of sand, just in this world generally, to think of comparing them to objects over trillions of miles. |

It's a scientific theory, based upon some credible assumptions which apparently is then determined as fact, which sits well in a post-truth age. We believe what we want irrespective. |

There are a lot of assumptions, some may be right some wrong, but nevertheless assumptions. Often these are used to build a foundation of theories which as they grow momentum they are assumed as fact. It's the way a lot if science is worked out. Sometimes an assumption is never proven to be fact but is latter assumed so. |

If we assume the theory that the universe is an infinite expanse then yes, there could well be more planets than grains of sand. The bigger question here is: how would you prove either way? |

Space containing stars is logically infinite
