South = beaches

North = culture

Both have been ruined my tourists but definitely still worth a visit for the food... oh and the fact that it's paradise

Ooo finally a thread I can actually answer with some useful input!

I love south east asia in general, Thailand is a great start to exploring the rest of this region as its a bit more organised

Depends what you're looking for and how long you have but my favourite urban area is Chiang Mai to the north, get the night train for an added bit of fun, if you head up there I highly recommend checking out the elephant orphanage and if you have time take a bus to Pai for a few days, its super chill.

If you're looking for more of a hectic time then Bangkok will offer that, but tbh i always try and escape bangkok as quickly as possible, that said there is some excellent food there, street food in Thailand is where its at. There are guides all over the internet to find some of the gems, hell one of the street food vendors has a michelin star (check the netflix series 'street food')

To the south lies a myriad of beautiful but sadly tourist ransacked islands. My favourites are Koh Lipe and Koh Tao, but I haven't visted loads of them yet. Koh Lanta is supposed to be nice too.

Avoid Phuket if you can, its just Thailand for package tourists.

I highly recommend searching the internet for blogs on this subject as there are many, travelfish.org is great.

Don't worry too much about planning your trip out in minute detail ahead of going, there is so much accommodation out there that you can afford to remain flexible.

Start and end with two or three nights in Bangkok. This will give you time to see all the local tourist sites.

There will be a travel agent in or near your hotel who will tell you all about the best places to visit, both locally, and in the rest of the country. Other residents of your hotel will also be good sources of info. if it has a bar where you can socialise. There are also plenty of beer bars around the red light district which don’t have loud music, so you can chat to other customers there.

I’ve written a guide to the Bangkok red light district, which you may find interesting. It’s six pages long and has three maps. I’ll let you have a copy if you unblock messages from single men, or let me know your email address.

Koh Chang (elephant island) a few hours south east of Bangkok. Koh Samui further south expensive to get to by air. Koh Lipe upmarket and beautiful.

Travel by train to see country rather than just fly if you have time, and do a night train with 1st or 2nd class cabin (rather than sleeping with others). Seats convert to bed, better than anything here.

Shame £ so weak now.

Do a first night or two in Bangkok to get a suit or two, or some shirts custom made. Then pick then up 2 days before you fly back (allows for alterations). Save yourself big money and makes the trip seem better value.
