Do you believe in the afterlife?

Jump to: Newest in thread

Do you believe in a God? Or a higher power? I do I have had supernatural experiences that no doubt lead me to believe there is an afterlife (my opinion only).

Not in the sense that there's a heaven or we all go on to exist on another plane, no I don't.

I have seen and experienced things that I can't explain but I don't think they're down to dead people influencing events.

No evidence of a god or anything super natural. No after life, you live you die and that’s it.

I'd like to, and I find it comforting to think so, but in my heart of hearts I don't think so no. Some people I think are lucky in a way to actually believe it.

Is it conditional? As I don't believe anything happens when we go, but if there is am I excluded as I didn't believe?

Pretty sure it comes down to your experiences - personally I have not experienced anything I could put down as super-natural - on the other hand science cannot explain why the universe exists so who knows, there may be a creator of some sort and an afterlife or we may be living in some sort of matrix simulation or something else entirely.

I think I believe and also think I believe in past lives. I had past life regression a few times.

Just “don’t know” would be the answer then. Yet. But no evidence whatsoever of supernatural happenings. Zero. Until there is, why would anyone believe in anything outside the natural world ?

Both. They can be theist and still be right about what we are made of. Vast majority of scientists are non believers. Also one can be agnostic and atheist. Not mutually exclusive

The law of conservation of mass states that no matter can be created or destroyed in a closed system , and the universe is one such system . All the matter that has ever existed in the universe has existed since its inception . It is a closed system , nothing comes in, nothing goes out . Matter can be transformed from one state to another , but cannot be destroyed . Most of the elements that make up the human body were formed in stars. Your atoms are made up of star dust , you, are made of star dust , and when your die you atoms will disperse throughout the universe and form part of other things ; trees, plants , asteroids, stars . So whilst your consciousness will not last forever , the matter you are made of , will.

Nope. No you didn’t. Now feet back on the ground, head out the clouds and really get a grip on reality.

But it’s so nice up here. It’s where dreams are made

Indeed.

Why don’t ghost hunters ever see cave men ghosts??

Thousands of people claim to have seen their dead dog, but nobody sees a ghost T Rex

If ghosts do exist, it would be insanely overcrowded, wouldn't it?

Nope, the ghost T Rex would eat all the rest of them. "

"The law of conservation of mass states that no matter can be created or destroyed in a closed system , and the universe is one such system .

"

This ! Brain dies, person as we no then cease to be conscious, well sometimes before that too. The end. No afterlife, no meeting dead relatives, no god, that we have any evidence of. If any exists, nobody yet proved it. So until then, default to not accepting supernatural anything

So brainwashed then? Were you told Santa was real too? Why you stop believing that? What evidence you provide of an afterlife or a god?

Bit harsh! I don’t believe but respect other people’s beliefs.

Harsh? Really? Fair questions on a claim of being a better place and why a grown person would believe. Respect critical thinking and respect the individual but surely beliefs without any evidence need challenging ? "

It can be measured scientifically yes. Heart rate, examples of loving behaviour to nurture a child, of a mother doing anything to protect her kids including giving up own life. I think atheism is more realistic as it’s just rejecting the claim of a god or gods. Not saying it’s not possible but no evidence that there is any.

For fucks sakes their faith is their unique way to get through things believing there's something else out there for them. Give them hope that things will get better, whether it's fact or not they are entitled to those beliefs whether some like it or not. "

I believe there is a higher unseen force or power, but I believe it's more to do with natural laws like chemistry, physics, things that can be proven by scientists. I dont believe there is spiritual place called heaven or hell, I think we make our own subjective heaven or hell from our life experiences, stories we are told and our perception of the world we live in.

What's heaven to one person may be hell for another.

I think we can be haunted by our own memories, things we play over and over in our heads of things our dead relatives said or did.

It's a combination of my experience with cancers, dementure, watching the suffering it caused, watching both my parents die and other family bereavements over a short period of time and everything those deaths included that led me to my belief.

Einstein was an agnostic as opposed to an atheist . Newton spent the latter part of his life searching for the secrets of turning base metals into gold and studies into the occult . Lord Kelvin was a devout Christian . Indeed kelvin went to his grave insisting the earth was no more than a few thousand years old . Despite coming up with the laws of thermodynamics.

I’m an atheist but it’s what I chose to believe and I wouldn’t question someone that chose to believe otherwise ( unless I was being preached at , and even then I would just walk away) .

If the world needs one thing it’s tolerance of other cultures and beliefs .

It's fact that we are all made from the same thing as everything else. When we pass the energy has to go somewhere so maybe it merges with the big ball of atoms we live on. Maybe some call that ball God, some bramah, some Allah, others just call it science. Disprove that one nah-sayers

That’s sad and a little confusing. Mother died of Alzheimer’s after years of suffering and that would have been one way of seeing there’s no loving god. Or higher power. What kind of higher power would make people suffer like that? I have beliefs. I belief there’s no evidence of a higher power. And no, I can’t prove that but I’m not making a claim I’m saying there is no evidence

Yes! Sort of. Science will keep on questioning and questioning to get to the nearest it can to truth without ever claiming 100% certainty. It’s tentative. Unlike religion or supernatural claims which state they know did definite. Science, like man, evolved and contoured to evolve

"I think atheism is more realistic as it’s just rejecting the claim of a god or gods. Not saying it’s not possible but no evidence that there is any. "

Some people "have" to believe in an afterlife, pretty much as the same as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Incas, Romans et cetera did in centuries past

"I believe in god & there is a better place you go when you pass over but was brought up Church & Sunday school! now look at me & I also believe in after life

Has anyone ever told you they are in live with you? I can imagine your response would be to point out the scientific explanation and go about your day lol

It can be measured scientifically yes. Heart rate, examples of loving behaviour to nurture a child, of a mother doing anything to protect her kids including giving up own life. Evidence that is and we have lots of it. Pupils dilating...the smile when you see a loved one is not the same for strangers. So yes, scientific with evidence

That might be the most romantic thing I’ve ever read

Reality but doesn’t mean romance can’t be brought in to it. Like when you see a great painting or hear a wonderful piece of music....it can make one feel awe. Nothing supernatural but still beautiful

Still believe in ghosties and Nessie blugggghhhhh

Arthur Conan Doyle believed in fairies !! Clever people still fall for bullshit

Well this has been both fun and futile. I’m off to watch most haunted

All those programmes and they’ve still not found a ghost!!! Wonder why

Because they don’t exist. I happen to believe it’s all a load of tosh also but please respect other people’s faith and don’t belittle them for it. I often wish I did believe. I’ve known people get great comfort from their faith during bad times. I don’t see that as a bad thing.

In your opinion. And that’s fine. Please accept other people’s.

Live with as many truths and as few false claims as possible for few thinking. Otherwise be easily duped about anything

"

But the thread started as a question to people to debate. No? I disagree though. Tolerance of religions that hate? Really? Don’t think so. Tolerance of religion that states leaving their religion should lead to death? No sir. Religion that bans homosexuals from marrying in their church? Telling children they can’t get to Christian heaven? Religions that mutilate genitals as the norm? Sorry but they should be highlighted as wrong not tolerated in the 21st century.

In principle isn't faith more beautiful than truth?

Most religious people I know have faith and never claim that what they are preeching is gospel... forgive the pun...but yeah that they have faith in a higher power. If you don't look too deep into each religion they are all kinda good as they say be tolerant and loving. Just gets a bit skewed by people's dodgy translations.

Dead Sea scrolls (original bible) is where it's at. I recommend it to all, religious or not

Dead Sea scrolls prove nothing of anything supernatural.

Faith is a poor way to go about life. Apart from religion what would you put faith in without some knowledge?

I see most religions as kinda bad. From brainwashing kids to GM, to wanting all other religions eradicated. Faith makes good people do bad things.

Of course it’s open for debate . But it’s such an emotive subject that it is unlikely to result in changing anyone’s fundamental beliefs . Is there anything anyone could say to get you to turn to religion ? questioning someone’s deeply held beliefs is rarely an easy conversation .

I agree that practises that lead to cruelty and discrimination should be challenged , but I am not convinced that they are the fault of religion per se ; more the fault of the people that have chosen to interpret it that way .

I agree. I find it difficult to get my head around any of it. Why people believe in what I feel is a fairy story and why people fast in the name of religion, including children. Why people will let their children die rather than receive somebody else’s blood which could save their life and so so much more. It’s all totally beyond me and I find it ludicrous. Having said all this I will listen and respect other people’s opinions which I don’t think you’re prepared to do. Seems like it’s your way or the highway and I feel you’re belittling and judging people unnecessarily.

If you had read the Dead Sea scrolls you would understand my point. It's off the wall crazy and more proves that the prophets were tripping their asses off in the desert and writing down all the crazy stuff they saw.

Faith is a beautiful way to go through life. Have faith in humankind instead of reading all the horrible facts. Have faith and belief in yourself rather than looking at the past experiences that have made you the person you are but don't define you. So many instances it's unreal!

You take a couple of bad instances and try to make out that all religion is bad. Have you ever been to a church? I'm not religious but every time I have been to a church the people in them are so friendly and warm... maybe you should try religion, no where near as cold as science, might warm you up a bit

Yes there is a way to get me to be religious. Proof! Difficult not to interpret the bible that says kill a man who lies with another man as not a bad thing that’s in the bible. Difficult to think a god that endorses slavery as anything but bad. A religion that uses GM is not interpreted wrong it’s in their book.

Religion was created to control people and is still doing it. Unless Catholic Church says it’s ok to be gay they are intolerant because of religion because of a book with no evidence it is true.

But if there is such a thing, why would he make it so easy for the Word to be so misinterpreted. They are incredibly incompetent, particularly for an all knowing being, to not realise that language changes.

It's so obviously man made, I don't understand why so many are taken in.

The fear of death and ceasing to exist is just too much of a worry for some that they want to go on forever.

I do believe there is something. Not necessarily a god, but spirits, at different stages. And we live many lives so our spirit can grow, progress and develop. Life is a lesson, if you don't learn that lesson you come back.

Had too many spiritual encounters for me not to believe.

Às for aliens existing? Is that such an odd concept for life to exist on other planets? When there so much of unexplored space and galaxies? Quite naive to think we are the only life form when there are bound to be planets like us elsewhere.

What about all the good things? Charity giving, missionaries, feeding the homeless, fund raising and all the other things religious people see as their duty. All of the good things can and do get done by secular means. Charitable work does not require a religion of any kind. Besides that, being good and doing good for the right reason is more important not like Christian soup kitchens that force the poor into praising god before giving food out. Churches paid tax be able to feed the poor anyways!

The older we get, the more we want to believe in life after death, for me I thought I was going to die. Everyone I knew who had the type of cancer I had, was either terminal or dead.

This I assumed I was going to die. Accepting that your time is over is very tough, I hD sleepless nights, but thanks to my medical team I’m ok.. this made me think long and hard about this subject..I watched my X-ray video of my swallowing food and thought, that’s not me it’s a vehicle I’m inside of. Which makes me think our soul is alive in our body, once the body ceases the soul has to escape...

Quite sad but...did x rays see a soul? I’m guessing not. I’m saying in fact not. X rays show a lot but have never ever revealed a soul. Not have scans. So.....???

Respect faith? But why though? Would you respect a view believing in Santa still? Thor? Pixies? Sounds ridiculous no?

my parents, my father in particular have a deep faith in god and Christ. I respect that because I respect them. Its possible to respect someone's views and the people themselves without agreeing with them

The fact that we assembled from atomic particles stuck together through magnetic bonds created from an exploding star in an infinite unknown universe. Makes me want to find out more not resign myself to ancient ideas about existence, derived through Occam’s razor idealism.

Sadly mine too. I still can’t respect their view. Mum dead now of Alzheimer’s and wonder which god decided 10 years of that was ok? Dad still RC and still denies the bible is a hate filled itinerary to control people. Love and respect are two different things. In my opinion of course

I'm glad my parents have faith, its carried them through some very dark times in recent years. I had to walk out of the room on one occasion when the church guy was visiting my mum who was very seriously ill and started praying. I kept my feelings to myself because it made them feel better about it all, who am I to not respect that?

Who? An individual who’s views should not be allowed to be dampened on the chance somebody might get upset. I’m guessing the scientist with their damned medicines helped more though? I also understand the desperation felt at the end and as one wag said on their death bed after being asked if he renounced the devil, “now is not the time to make enemies”

No....I have seen people die....they just die...no spirit/soul leaving their body.

I believe people live on....in the memories of their family & friends

" Do you believe in a God? Or a higher power? I do I have had supernatural experiences that no doubt lead me to believe there is an afterlife (my opinion only).

"

In a word no I find it hard to believe in God or any divine higher power because there are to many contradictions in many if not all religions and the continual moving of the goal posts to fit with modern times but it does put a downer on life in general if the fleeting time we spend here amounts to very little in the long term

Some people find comfort and solace in religion and use it to guide their lifestyles

As for supernatural experiences they are very rarely linked with religion if you dig deep unless its cases of demonic possession or such

On a serious note I work in a 300 year old building along the Thames of a night and there’s a lot of inexplicable noises, voices and things that happen here which is common knowledge with our engineers

Same thing. All supernatural beliefs based on word of man. No cases of demonic possession been proven, most were epilepsy or mental breakdowns. And yet still kids are being murdered for being possessed! In 21st century due to following the bible! Even one child dying due to this is intolerable so no, I don’t accept faith is ok without evidence. Call me to sympathetic but a child dying hurts me.

I respect the fact that their faith gave them comfort and believe that it had the power to do that. I also firmly believe that although my parents don't realise it the comfort they got came from inside themselves rather than from God or Jesus but I'm not in the business of pointing that out to dying people.

I don't believe in God as he/she/it is sold to us. This quote from S Hawking sums it up for me "if you like you can call the laws of science 'God', but it wouldn't be a personal god that you could meet and put questions to"

There is no god. There is not a single scrap of evidence for a god. There are many reasons why gods were invented by man (from explaining unknown things to control systems).

For anyone who does believe why do you believe in only that one particular god out of the 5000 (rough estimate) that are out there?

And if you do believe in one of those 5000 why are you atheistic, just like me, to the other 4999?

And I’m not saying we should go around telling dying people they are deluded. But I’ve never known many to pray rather than go doctors. Deep down they know it’s useless. I say nobody does but I’m aware lots have let their kids die due to no blood transfusion or praying instead. And we DO criticise and prosecute so why? Are we telling them it’s not ok for them? Difference is? Like fgm illegal but not Male? It’s in the bible so is ok? I’m happy to criticise prejudice and abuse even though it’s in the bible. We all should be

I agree and my dad and I had "words" when my brother was nearly killed in a motorbike accident and he quoted the bible to me. In my dads case I think his faith and belief that you should trust in god has stopped him from taking action when he really should have done. Ironically he usually depends on me to take the action

The afterlife will be over populated so it will be global afterlife warming and it will all go to pot.
