Went to get my prescription filled only to be told there’s a national shortage of Noriday along with other contraceptive pills.

Check with your GP that you aren’t affected or you may need to get an alternative. GPs are still prescribing for medication that isn’t available.

And this is nothing to do with Brexit as far as I know.

It is because there is a Europe/UK shortage of HRT due to the active ingredient being current unavailable. Some GPs have resorted to using contraceptives, which serve as a short term fix for those women who need something as a stop gap to alleviate symptoms of menopause.

Noriday is one of them

On the menopause pages on FB ladies are going to chemists first, asking what they’ve got then getting prescriptions. Some are bringing back from abroad - patches seem to be hardest to get hold of

I work in the pharma industry - believe me BREXIT is very much having an effect on the supply chain of medication into pharmacy, GP practices and hospitals

No different to my epi pen

It’s a life saving drug for me and there is a national shortage......

I ordered a new one 4 months ago and I’m still waiting for it to be dispensed to me.

I have been told until it’s in stock should I react I’m to use the out of date epi pen as the shelf life is a year longer then the out of date label.

It’s madness

There are a lot of drugs in shortage at the moment. So don't be surprised if your usual contraceptive comes in a different name. There was a shortage of contraceptive injections not long back.

Brexit hasn't happened yet. In what way is the impending event influencing supplies of medicine?

My hormone injections have the same issue and alternative can't be prescribed in the UK

August they issued statement saying Pfizer won't have any made until end of the year. But I need it every 10 weeks I had a spare for my last injection, they do have stock of a different one but it's intramuscular instead of subcutaneous which means I have to go get it done and it's higher dose. I've been on it before I have more side effects with it than the one I've been on over a year. So not a happy bunny at the moment. I either stop it and back in limbo or take the one I've been avoiding.

It’s been almost 12 months since the global shortage of epinephrine started, was told to use out of date pens also which is fine until a vehicle arrives carrying vials of Adrenaline.

I’m glad condoms haven’t been affected!!

I was just trying to highlight the issue. I’m not menopausal and on the mini pill as I had mesh and the mirena coil removed last year.

I just feel that GPs should know about these issues and prescribe alternatives rather than wait until the pharmacist tells us there’s an issue.

My local Pharmacy plus my GP have advised that certain medicines and AB's are in short supply.

It's because a lot aren't made in the UK, but instead are made in Europe and beyond.

But with some crucial component ingredients being in short supply, manufacturing countries have cut back partially or fully to preserve their respective Home demands first; any surplus is then exported, albeit in smaller than usual quantities.

Hence the shortages.

They do know, they are updated. As one drug becomes unavailable they switch to alternatives where available. At present the situation changes daily. If your surgery dispenses their own prescriptions they should know!
