Without doubt we need sleep...vital to a healthy life..trust me, insomnia is the worst thing in the world, all you crave is to sleep...a human body needs downtime...mine used to go a few weeks on 2 hours sleep BUT it would crash n burn and I would sleep for way too many hours in one period..and that was a regular cycle for many years and it's not pleasant

This

Average 3-4 hours if lucky, but not all at once, usually in hour or so naps.

As someone who has suffered with insomnia for nearly 30 years, I can say that we most definitely need sleep.

I actually managed to get a pretty decent nights sleep last night and I feel so much better this morning (compared to yesterday morning)because of it

There's many medical studies/reports out there that discuss the effects of sleeplessness. Ranging from short term mental health effects, through to fatal consequences.

I feel for anyone who suffers insomnia, it must be so debilitating.

Look after yourselves folks, get the sleep your body and mind absolutely needs.

There was an experiment I read about involving rats where they deprived them of all sleep and the rats died as a result.

There is also a hereditary illness I have read about in which a person gradually loses the ability to sleep. Eventually they are unable to sleep at all and they die.

So yes, sleep is essential for human life.

We very much need sleep. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a thing we do.

Research on animals shows that they die after a long period without sleep.

I never get a “decent” night’s sleep as I’m an insomniac, but I’m also a mum, and my oldest child is severely autistic with no sleep pattern, so I can’t rely on anything medicinal to help me as I need to be able to wake should my girls wake, so broken sleep is the norm for me.

I once went 73 hours with no sleep, trying to study in uni as she hadn’t slept. I ended up crying and felt physically sick in a lecture- not good.

When I eventually qualified I was taken aback by the fact that, in the medical profession, we lecture about the need for sleep and it’s holistic benefits, yet don’t seem to care that our staff are often doing erratic work patterns, and as such have erratic sleep patterns, and ignore the physical and psychological impact that can have on them, and as such the potential negative effect upon our patients.

Sleep is a fundamental need, but one we all neglect at times xx I need sleep, but struggle to get it, hence often running on nervous energy, then hitting a wall and feeling overtired and emotional x Viv x

We're not fully clear what sleep is all about but it seems that we need it to be healthy, as well as to support learning and memory.

You think you function properly because you're used to little sleep but the fact is you're not functioning properly and it's harmful to your health ... says she awake at 4.52

Haha, maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. In the couple of hours respite I get a day I should get a job as a lumberjack or something I’m obviously joking, I only get an hour on a Thursday, and I would hate the footwear, haha. If it works for you then it’s all good, but it’s still something I’d be concerned about. Our bodies need rest and sleep, look after you and make sure you have reserves for if the time comes that you do hit that wall. Recovery time for people who run on empty, if they become ill, can take longer x Viv x

We definitely need sleep. I don't function at my best unless I get a good 7-8 hours. I can get by with less as a one-off, but I'll be miserable and scatty and I'll probably fall asleep at my desk

You die without sleep.

There is a condition you can get where you wont sleep, you will never sleep again, and it kills you. There is no cure for it.

It starts something similar to insomnia, but insomniacs often "micro sleep" they dont actually know they are sleeping. They can crash their car thinking they were awake the whole time. Micros sleep feels like a heavy blink.

With people with the condition it starts like this, their sleep goes down to zero, it then goes to micro sleeps, it then stops.

This period can only ever last a few months. However the person you know will be gone within a week.

They will become irritable, they will become agitated, their whole behavior will change. They will literally tell you non stop that they are exhausted. They will feel drained all the time.

They then progress into total madness.

The death of these people has never been witnessed by anyone. Everyone found with it has reached a point where they have stood up and walked off. Just stand up, walk off and are found dead somewhere.

It must be a very hard thing to see a loved one go through.

I've gone over 48 hours with no sleep many times with the military, things start getting weird like hallucinating people in the trees through your night sight or hearing radio beeps and chatter that isn't there. I sleep like a log when I get back from exercise though!

We need sleep to have our dreams and for our beauty

And on the medical side it gives our hearts a rest, brain activity lowers and we make a chemical called gama that soothes us, our body goes into repair each night, the old saying is a baby needs sleep to grow is actually true, cells multiple better die to the various chemicals released when body is resting, our body temperature drops when sleeping we must have all have woken up very cold during the night this is all energy saving for replenishing our whole being body and mind
