Finders keepers?
Jump to: Newest in thread
You hail a black cab, jump in the back and notice a package...curiosity gets the better of you and you take a peak and it's PACKED with cash.
Some may hand it to the immediately to the driver?
Others may take it?
You get it home and count it to find there's 25 grand what do you do?

"I'd probably take it to a police station. I couldn't keep that much money.
How much could you keep?
Probably £50. I've found a tenner on the pavement and kept that."
I'd keep it too unless I actually saw who dropped it. |

Yeah if I saw someone drop it I'd give it back.
Slightly off topic but a similar theme. I often wonder if the very valuable gifts people's grandparents were given by employers when they were in service that the adult grandchildren subsequently take along to the Antiques Roadshow were actually gifts at all. They're often small, pocket sized items... |

Hand it in. It's very likely to be dodgy and unlikely to be reclaimed if with Police.
Unless it can be identified as being dodgy then there's a chance if it's not claimed that you will get it.
Worth the chance of being honest. |

Take it and place it under the mattress, have a good sleep. Wake up have some breakfast nice bath then go shopping nothing out the normal, book a holiday nothing outrageous. Place the rest of the cash all over the house or leave it with someone you trust and give them a cut and take a bit of a time. |

I would probably hand it in, I mean who carries £25k around sooooo I would figure it’s “dirty money” and wouldn’t want to get involved in any of that, best to hand it in and wait to see if it’s claimed |

That's a point. If you hand it in to the police, after a certain amount of time unclaimed it becomes yours legally. |

Nope.. High amounts of cash found in suspicious circumstances over 1000 pounds is donated to charity if not claimed. Finder does get to keep it

I'm an honest person, generally.
Only I find myself in a position where I desperately need some money.
I'd keep it, I wouldn't feel guilty about it either. Needs must and all that.
I'm no criminal, I don't hurt people, I'm just trying to survive and if being an opportunist little bastard means I can feed myself and my kids. I can live with that. |

If you were to hand it on to the police, they would(and have done in the past) seek to keep it by convincing a court that it was proceeds of crime. The chances of you getting to keep it as a finder are very slim.

If there were no contact details, I'd keep it. Contact details, especially if it belonged to a pensioner, I'd return it, although I'd still be tempted to take a couple of grand. |

Something similar to this happened very recently and was reported on BBC news. I forget exactly where the money was found or how much was involved but it was certainly a large amount. The guy handed it in then refused to accept any reward from the guy who lost it. I for one was touched by his honesty |

if its dodgy you are not going to get it back..
Like many of us..I work hard and 25K well that would make a massive difference to my life. like I said if there was contact info that would be a different story. |

"Hand it in god why would you steal it its not yours.
technically it's not stealing for me anyway and if I handed it in I wouldn't trust it to get to the person. "
It is stealing you took it form the taxi without the drivers consent its theft. So you don't trust someone else not to make sure it gets to the right person so you steal it wow!
I hope if you visit peoples houses you don't think this way if money is on a table or shelf.

After, thinking about it, if I saw a package in the back of a taxi, even though I’m quite a nosey person, I can’t imagine I would even touch it let alone look inside it. It might be a candid camera style set up .... |

Now here could be a way out.. according to the Thefts Act 1968.firstly, ask the taxi driver if he's lost any money, he'll probably say no because he won't know the amount..then give him your solicitors name and address ,say" if anyone has lost any ,get them to ring this number.. my solicitor..
Another way(if you're worried about it being drug money)Yes still hand the money into the police but importantly, tell the local newspaper first.. make sure a journalist knows you've handed it in (tell them to withhold your name if they want the story) that way with media coverage it's likely to be handed back after 28 days and not kept by legal small print. If it is reclaimed by say a pensioner (savings) you've done the correct
thing both ways !

The honest part of me would probably hand the £25k back into the police as God knows how it got there in the first place..
Although part of me would seriously think what would £25k add to the lives of myself andy children. |
