One of my grandfathers was a fireman in the Blitz in London and at the height of the attacks my grandmother kissed him goodbye every evening with the view that she was kissing him goodbye forever.
MY other grandfather was a tank driver on the field at the 2nd Battle of El Alamein in 1942, of which Churchill wrote: "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." After the war, he wrote: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat."
And my grandpaps was there. |

my grandad witnessed the first raid the germans mounted, sitting on his tractor having some tea, then some german bombers come roaring overhead to bomb Rosyth, and they met some spitfires. |
