I asked for a rare steak, it was well done. If I don't get what I ordered, I'll send it back. But I am polite about it, not an arse.

I do it a lot too.

If I'm asked how I would like my steak cooked, I want it cooked to my specification, not what the chef thinks I want.

If I say "Go with whatever the chef suggests for that cut of meat" then he can do what he wants.

we try and mention it afterwards. A good restaurant or hotel will notice if plates go back to the kitchen with a lot of uneaten food on them. We've had money unexpectedly refunded several times because we haven't eaten the food.

If I decide to spend my hard earned cash in a restaurant, I am paying not only for the food itself but covering the wages of everyone else involved in the process. I'm choosing to eat in a particular restaurant by choice and expect (not unreasonably) to get what I ask for if it is on the menu.

I'm paying for the whole experience, not just for the "body fuel"

I think its a bigger dick move to not give them a chance to rectify a problem, and then go off and bad mouth them, than to ask for it to be fixed.

No, it's not, but the issue is at a higher level than the individual. Me eating a substandard meal is just going to line the pockets of the owner of the restaurant.

I think it all depends on the quality of the restaurant. I've sent a steak back and was asked by the waiter if I wanted to go to the kitchen to speak with the chef. I did so, the chef was a lovely guy who apologised profusely and offered me the choice of steaks to re-cook whilst I watched. I left a very hefty tip for him and the kitchen staff as well as the waiting staff.

There and to the left a bit

You're obviously stirring for the sake of stirring OP but you're confusing two separate issues.

Food wastage/shortage and the need for food banks is of course a terrible thing - but it's got no connection to whether food should be sent back if it's below standard whatsoever.

You could argue that you shouldn't take an item of clothing that has a fault back to a shop because there are people on the streets that need clothes if you use your argument.

Yes and I don't care if it was wasting food, the person who cooked it wasted it, not us.

Best example was in a hotel in Dumfries away with work. There was a group of 6 or 7 of us, most ordered steak, the meals turned up seriously over cooked on a bed of mash and baked beans (wtf).

I looked around at everyone, after trying a mouthful just to make sure my eyes weren't lying to me, and asked if it was the worse food they'd ever had, I feel sorry for the one guy who didn't say yes

What was worse was the initial customer service, I called the waitress over to say we knew it wasn't her fault but the food was unacceptable. We saw her speak to the Maitre'D, quickly followed by him storming off and kicking the door into the kitchen (great customer impression on it's own). He shortly came out and said, in an aggressive tone, is there a problem? At that point I lost any respect or patience to deal with his attitude so calmly replied 'For starters I asked to speak to the organ grinder, not the monkey, so fuck off and get him.'.

The hotel manager came over a short while later and explained that the chef had gone home ill so they'd done their best to put something together by the available staff. Lesson is, just be honest and we'd have understood and accepted it and gone out somewhere instead of the farce that ensued.

So yes, it is definitely acceptable to send food back.

My breakfast tasted a bit weird the next morning too

"Why would you do that ?"

Yes. Most recently on my birthday because my steak was stone cold. I then had to sit there hungrily while everyone else ate their meals.

I guess because people specifically ask for it to be cooked a certain way and if it doesn’t meet their standards they ask for it to be done again, each to their own. I’d just be happy going out to a restaurant lol

There's little food wastage in catering. Leftovers and scraps are bought by farmers as feed for pigs and poultry.

From my experience of both being a chef and a restaurant manager, the chefs and owners would rather be told there and then if there is a problem so that they could fix it to avoid bad reviews and a customer not returning.

If you are visiting a decent place where the chefs actually take pride in their food then they won't abuse the food before sending it out to you, if you are polite about it the chef will grumble a bit and just do the job that they paid to do.

The feeding of cooked food waste to pigs is actually a criminal offence these days.

Absolutely! Im paying for a meal, I expect it to be hot and what I ordered.

You'd return an item of clothing if you found a hole in it 2mins after buying it. No difference.

Not very often but I have done before when something is still cold or even frozen or when I've been given meat by mistake which I don't eat.

I haven’t sent food back unless it’s incorrect, I’m too worried about people spitting in my food!

On one occasion I said I would only pay for what I had actually eaten. The food was unsatisfactory and a member of staff didn’t come to ask if the meal was ok and I couldn’t get anyone’s attention until I was well into the meal.

Apologies. Obviously different laws for different countries. It's still done here.

Of course. If it isn't to your expectations from a menu, description or how you've been asked you want it cooked then why wouldn't you? In some cases someone doesn't want something on a dish, such as certain sauces or it doesn't specify that it comes with additional drizzled etc. If the person doesn't like that and it isn't clearly stated then ask for a replacement.

Would you not send your car back if you ordered a 2.0 and got delivered a 1.6?

"never send your food back that's the golden rule. if anyone know about the catering industry will tell you not to as the 9 out of 10 chefs do things to it I won't mention "

This kind of comment really fucks me off. I work in a restaurant and I can tell you right now that's bullshit. I can't comment on other places but I can guarantee our chefs have far more respect than that. Plus if they so much as joked about it they'd be not only sacked but lose any friendships they had formed. They'd be outed and shunned.

Please don't scare people into not speaking up if their meals are wrong. I think I can speak for almost everyone that works in the industry when I say, tell the staff, in a respectful and polite manner, and they'll bend over backwards to make sure you leave happy.

I care about people and the experience they have and you make it sound like zero shits are given. Bad form.

I'm always to embarrassed to send it back, so i just eat what I can and if they ask how my meal was I always say it was lovely but I'm really full now.

but very rarely ever go back to the restaurant unless the people I'm with want to go back, but never order the same thing just incase it's crap again.

I love it when people order

a blue steak and say ‘I didn’t want it like that, it’s not cooked’

Or rare ‘without any blood please’

Or ‘I didn’t want it that rare’

I actually spent the first 12 years of my career as a Chef - not begging myself up, but six years of that working under a certain Frenchman in Oxford..

Steak is tricky to get right. We'd pack ours in yoghurt upon deliver for around 12 hours to let the cultures tenderise the tissue a little.

Once ordered, we'd season with ground anchovies, not salt. If cooked anywhere from saignant (rare) to a point (medium), let the steak come up to around 10 celsius before cooking. And always, always, always rest for a good 5 minutes or so before serving

"I send back cold, incorrect, or sub-standard quality meals. How do restaurants know they need to do a better job if nobody says anything!

Scathing reviews online ?!"

That is a very modern cowardly way out. Man (or woman) the fuck up and tell someone in person rather than hide behind a keyboard. If you then get shit service after that ask to see the manager. Sort stuff out face to face.

I have sent stuff back on occasion. Just be polite about it. No need to make a scene. However if I'm ordering steak I always ask the server if the chef cooks it under or over - they will have an idea if others send theirs back for over or under cooking. If the chef is known for overcooking then I can adjust my order.

Many restaurants are happy to either replace or comp part of your meal. I had this at a Jamie Oliver restaurant where half the shellfish in my dish hadn't opened. I was given the option of a replacement or reduced bill.

I don’t even get to the point of accepting the food there. I don’t know why it is but they just can’t do a quarter pounder plain no matter how I ask for it - quarter pounder no cheese, quarter pounder extra plain, I even ask for a burger and a bun but it always comes with cheese. Always. I don’t leave the counter until I’ve checked it because it is always wrong.

Why is it that servers always ask you if everything is ok just as you take a big mouthful and cant speak.

I swear they get training on that shit.
