"Define popular...

I don't think that's always about popularity. Different thread types attract different attention, an inclusive thread that asks a question will get more response than someone just making a statement. Also some people encourage conversation and engage after starting a thread, others just leave it.

Personally I think some people like me, some people don't. Either way I'll just keep doing my thing, I'm here to entertain myself and pass time, being popular isn't high on my agenda.

I don't know, I tend not to keep a tally of who responds or how often.

I know that everyone feels as if they get ignored at times and often perception and personal bias govern how we view things.

It's not a competition though, comparing my experience to someone else's is a very negative world view.

I'd say I'm engaging. People aren't necessarily responding to me they're joining in with an inclusive thread.

I think that kind of sums up my point. Meli, objectively I'd say that you're one of the most popular forumites but people rarely perceive that.

I think that if popularity is a person's aim then there's possibly something wrong.

Maybe? I try to talk to anyone who talks back.

I know I rub some people up the wrong way and I bet I'm misreading others. Some definitely don't like me and its probably mutual. I try to avoid them and respect the boundaries, clash occasionally, but semi-respectfully out of begrudging respect as a regular forum user.

I hope so, because I do sincerely like most people who contribute regularly. It feels like a community at times. I'm not overly fussed if I'm not, yes attention seek, but only cos I fuckin' loves it I don't need it and function perfectly well without it. Provided I've someone sane to talk to.

Yeah but look at how those 4 posters interact. It's not all about how much people like them, it's about the energy they bring, the fact that they draw people out by getting involved, most of their threads are actively encouraging conversation by getting people to think and people love talking about themselves.

As Tea Monkey said we are all seeing things from different viewpoints, you see those people as popular because of the threads they start but you don't notice them being ignored 4 times in a row on a snog fuck avoid thread.

You get used to seeing the same names pop up starting threads. Some of those threads encourage debate, conversation and sometimes a bit of silliness. I don’t respond to threads because of who has started them, I just respond to the parts that catch my eye.

I don’t buy into this popular forumite notion. Some people are more recognisable because of how they are or what they post but that doesn’t make them popular it just means they are more visible. For what it’s worth

I find it best not to fret about whether a thread dives or thrives.

Of course some people are more popular than others

People are more popular with their mates etc yes but you can’t judge popularity by the number of comments on a thread in my opinion. "

I'd be cheating if that were the case as I make up at least 60% of the comments on any given one of my threads

Plus I mostly speak to people one on one in private messages more than on the forums.

"You get used to seeing the same names pop up starting threads.

Of course some people are more popular than others

I think it depends on the thread. I agree some could post a thread about a tomato and it would hit 175.

My threads are usually something I've read and thinking about. I like the varied opinions. People on here aren't afraid to disagree, or tell me I'm talking bollocks.

If I wanted "yes" answers I'd just ask my mates. As in, mates try to be supportive and agree, but I prefer to see both sides of an argument/ topic.

Honestly, no idea. There are definitely some people I feel more affinity with than others, but that's not popularity, that's being like minded. I'm not one for arguments so I guess I avoid interacting with people who have vastly opposing opinions to mine.
