Only rule is they have to be famous/infamous, nationally, internationally or within their field.

No family, no friends.

Muhammad Ali is one of mine. His skill and intelligence in and out of the ring. His willingness to speak politically and stand up for his beliefs. Strength of character and just an all round unique human being.

Bethany Hamilton the surfer who lost her arm to a tiger shark as a teenager, yet went on to compete and win at the highest level in a sport that is incredibly demanding in terms of mobility and balance. How she even got back in the water, or through the white water is beyond me.

Gareth Thomas. World class rugby player who had the balls to come out and be open about his sexuality. Countering the largely camp, effeminate, drama llama gay celebrities. You can be tough, can be hard, can be masculine, funny, laidback, manly man.. yet still like a bit of cock.

I have more.. but think it's only fair to let you lot list the rest.

Liverpool

Stephen Fry. For starters being so open about his bipolar disorder despite the stigma. Also how open he is about not just his sexuality but more than that such as the myth that all gay men like anal sex. I could listen to him speak about anything. He's so intelligent, considered and thought provoking.

Good question!

Sir Andy Murray. For fighting for every single point, no matter what; for showing his emotions during that Wimbledon loss; for quietly and consistently challenging people about their attitudes to women in sport.

My first true example of human strength and courage was Simon Weston.

I remember watching his story as a child and being astonished and shocked by what he was experiencing with his wounds. The pure mental strength he has shown to recover from that and prove to everyone your life isn’t over. He’s carved out a normal life for himself and his charity work to help others is unquestionable.

Him like so many that have followed, both military and civilian, have proved that just because you have probably experienced the worst moment in your life, you have amazing strength and courage to continue and make the best, and even excel.

They are truly inspirational and shows you that there is nothing you can’t do if you have the will to do it

Simon Weston was once told to leave a restaurant as the manager said his appearance was putting off other diners. Appalling.

Manchester (he/him)

There are quite a few to be honest, I think the top ones are;

Dame Tani Grey-Thompson; an inspiration and fantastic athlete, ambassador and all round competitor.

Jack Lemmon; a brilliant actor with an amazing range and body of work across decades, my role model in my early career.

Sir Ian McKellen; personally and professionally an icon. His work for LGBTQ+ rights would place him on my list even before factoring in his body of performance.

There are loads more but I'll leave them there for now...

Appalling indeed.

No one should be treated differently or made to hide away because they are not deemed the norm

Those that take offence are the shallow ones, unaccepting and only ficus on the outside. God forbid they ever have someone they know be in that situation where they are suddenly different through no fault of their own, as I think they wouldn’t have the strength to support them

Read all the way through this thread and seen lots of examples of heroes for different reasons and i honestly agree with them all, however, i would have to say Simon Weston too. I was about 10 when the Falklands war started and a few friends of the family were there, it was the first time i intently watched the news. Then when this story broke i cried, and i mean properly cried

Surely he should be Sir Simon Weston, an inspiration to so many

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

Simon Weston is doing a theatre tour at the moment in case you didn't know. You might want to look it up.

Bill Hicks. He changed my view on the world and made me cry with laughter. He also taught me it was OK to be different and keep true to the life I want to lead not the one society expects of me.

Iain Banks. His imagination blew my mind. I felt like I knew him through his work.

It's a bit weird to mourn someone whom you've never met, but these two...
