That is true, but that is one of the things that makes them exciting, its like going on a first meet without any pressure and knowing there are hopefully lots of people to meet and talk too, always plenty of surprises. |

didn't help that we didn't know anyone either "
I guess there is always that risk, i cant stand that though, i try to mingle as much as i can, as you never know who could be your next good friend, sorry it was such a disappointing experience for you, i guess it is like any other social event sometimes people can get cliquey |

Yeah..... and form your own clique
Just because it is called a socal it doesn't mean everyone has to want to talk to everyone else. Plenty of people go to socials to catch up with online friends or arrange who they want to spend some time with in advance.... a chance to meet up with some of the people they have been talking to online.
It's no different to going to a pub, except some of these friends have waited months to see eachother and have a natter.
The thing I find most annoying about socials.... the people who expect you to talk to them just because they recognise your username, when you have never chatted online previously. |

I remember travelling to a social in Ipswich a few years ago with my then partner and my girlie. We didnt know anyone. People didnt mix at first and it was a very cool atmosphere. However my little group just got into action. We mingled, moved tables together. Got everyone introduced and the party commenced. It was great |

If you get that at a social it means you have been unfortunate enough to pick a social with crap hosts imo

I didn't say there were cliques, as polo said many people go to socials to meet people they have been talking too on line, and that can look like a clique because they have shared experiences and banter and you can feel like an outsider, that is just life, i don't see anything wrong with it.
It is no different to different groups of friends with shared interests meeting in a pub, there is the chance for everyone to meet or for them to enjoy the company of those they came to meet.
Surely better than if that opportunity wasn't there, people have the choice. |

I enjoy socials and I do think that you have to put in effort to chat to people and mingle. Its nice to meet new people and they are a lot of fun.
I prefer a smaller intimate party than a big social I have to admit. Well for swinging fun that is. Big socials held at clubs are essentially about mingling and well socialising, not really ideal for swinging, not exactly discreet for play. There can be people that on sight you know you won't get on with, you may spot them giving you sly looks etc, but that is normal at any party or night out anywhere.
But I do think they are fun. At the two socials I've attended the hosts did make everyone feel comfortable and introduced others etc.
At smaller parties, house parties etc, people are in the same room so therefore all are chatting together. I really enjoy them

Like i said earlier, to me if that happens its just bad hosting imo.
If i see people stood on there own at our socials i steer them in the direction of group of people and introduce them,
I have certain regulars at our socials who i know will take them under the wing and introduce people around.

A sign of a good hostess, having seen what work can go into a social, i have utmost respect for those who organise them, no matter how well it turns out. |

We deliberately "crash" the groups, we go out of our way to introduce ourselves to as many people as possible, and never get pinned down in one area of the room, seems to work for us! |
