Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Really it was an interrobang, not just a question mark when I said it to one of the teens.
What age were you when you realised that your parents had lives before you and lives of their own?

I didn't discover the playful, flirty side of my mother until she was 50 and I was 24.
We'd got her a flight on Concorde as a birthday present and she staggered off the flight arm in arm with the man in the seat next to hers. |

"To be honest, OP, don't quite understand your question! "
Do you know your parents? For a lot of our formative years we think they are just there to service our selfish needs. One day you realise they have lives of their own. When was that for you?

"about 17
What did you discover?
that my dad was a funny and sociable man rather than the slightly stern figure I always found him to be."
They behave differently with others (as we do, I suppose).
Mine is the life and soul of every party but a grumpy git at home.

17 that my dad was a randy bugger and more gets revealed over time
18th birthday, my mum and her mate flirting embarrassing and a bit more with the waiter all night.
That night I ended up the parent and tucking her in bed with a bucket, numerous times as she thought it funny to keep rolling out the other side.
We laugh about it now |

The chances of fab knowing what an interrobang is never mind actually managing to reproduce one is unlikely. I will confess it is a while since I actually used one - but I can see why you wanted too. |

It might not be possible to reproduce the symbol but I just use ?! and sometimes !?, depending on emphasis.
I'll assume you haven't 'met' your parents yet. |

I'm not sure I ever did meet mine.
My boys have probably started to realise I'm not just a mum . They know I have a social life and like to dance the night away on the rare occasions I go out with my friends.
My eldest knows I was seeing someone and even gave sound relationship advice when I was dumped! |

I do wonder whether young people now know more about their parents, particularly those that claim they are friends/best friends.
It's sweet that your eldest felt they needed to provide comfort and advice.

I'm not sure I (LB) ever met my dad as I was only six when he died but I definitely met the woman who gave birth to me when someone else's wife arrived at our door and proceeded to have a catfight in the hall. |

When I was around 13/14? We went to a wedding and my mum was wearing a probably too low cut dress and dancing and flirting with men as I sat at the small people's table. It suddenly struck me that my mum wasn't just mum but someone who had danced with many people before. |
