No you are not going mad.
1st decade starts at birth
2nd decade starts at 10
3rd decade starts at 20
4th decade starts at 30
They might be getting confused by thinking you are saying you are 4 decades old, which you aren't. It's a bit like the difference between saying the 1900s and the 20th Century. |

It could also be calculated by the decade you were born.
eg born in the 80s,would be your first decade,90s your second and so on.
By that thinking someone born in 1969 would be on their 6th decade with January,just 4 months away being their 7th  |

Sorry, but technically he's right, although it can be confusing for some. The first decade of your life is between 0 and your 10th birthday, second from then till your 20th and so on.
Therefore from your 30th birthday to your 40th IS the 4th decade of your life. If someone died 35 say they'd have died in the 4th decade of their life, even if it was incomplete. If however you rephrase it to "How many COMPLETED decades have you lived?" thenthe answer would be 3, though they'd have still lived partway through their 4th.
For the easiest analogy, it's like before years in secondary schools changed to Year 7, Year 8 etc, someone who had started secondary school 3 years and 6 months ago would be in "4th year".

I think you'll find that proms, as in the promenade concerts, originated in the 18th century over here, well before the USA had any pretensions of culture. Likewise, graduation from our universities is centuries old as well! |

think it was more aimed at the school prom haha. But good fact non the less
Another thing to come over is the emergency number 911 ... due to American tv and the youth of today we had to add 911 to our emergency number list as they knew this over our own 999 .... I've not tried to ring it but I've been told while on 1st aid courses |

If you really want to upset people you could point out the percentages.
0 to 10 = 100% of your life
10 to 20 = 50% of your life
20 to 30 = 33% of your life
30 to 40 = 25% of your life
So decade 4 is running 4 times faster than decade 1 |

You are indeed correct, and I will explain why as there seem to be a lot of people who don't understand how age works.
I have a cousin who believed her daughter had begun her 23rd year when she turned 23, when she had, in fact begun her 24th year.
Here's why.
On your first birthday, you have been alive for a whole year, so you are entering your second year (if you were beginning your furst year it would indicate that you are born a 1 year old)
The clue here is that you are '1 year old'
So, when you turn 10 years old, you are beginning your 11th year and your second decade.
And so it follows that at age 20 you begin your 3rd decade and at 30 you begin your 4th |

indeed they are so if you were born in 1960 1970 1980 then you can class it as having been here a decade . So born in 1987 your were in the 80s but you havnt lived for a decade have you ? |

Your first decade is from 0 to 10
Your second from 10 to 20, your third from 20 to 30 and your fourth from 30 to 40.
Your 4th decade ends on your 40th birthday . I'm in my 7th decade, my father is in his 10th as he's in his nineties. It'd because we all start at zero |
