Saw some Mothers Day cards with "Mom" on them! When I asked my local card supplier why, he said that the youngsters want them because that is so cool when people in American sit-coms say it!

Not for me...

I have american friends whom I visit and talk to on the internet in between. I have picked up a few sayings, still saying coffee though and not cawfee like they do.

I don't like awesome or dude. I'm not keen on southern american words like y'all, purdy and my all time hate axe instead of ask

I'd sooner listen to 100 people spouting nothing but americanisms than listen to one fucking twatasaurus end a sentence with 'simplez'

Very true - though I do think that one of the really grating attitudes they have is how they "won the war for us".

I'm the same with the words 'Rant Over' on threads and posts. Its like those words are meant to scare you in an attempt not to disagree with the poster.

Yeah, so many trashy terms that are being imported, including new_eastmids's 'do the math', which is infuriating, when in English it's always maths.

Plus 'Step up to the plate', which many of our politicians are using, makes me think of 'Please Sir, can I have some more' (obviously not an Americanism).

'My bad' is pretty annoying too - hear it so much over there, and it's crept over here too.

Expiration and other words that seemingly get elongated, or more complicated than they need to accurately be, such as 'Expiry', which is perfectly simple and clear.

'Could care less', when they really mean the exact opposite of this, ie Couldn't care less.

Has no one picked up on 'O my god'..

Or its many variants..

'An Im like...(pause to pull stupid face and milk maximum attention) Omma/umma god'...

or the more melodic..

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh...myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...goooooooooooooooooooood!

or..

Ooooooooooooooooooooh....maggod

Funny how you never her blokes say this though...

Americanisms are fine if your an American..its fine your a boring British Account or sales manager blurting on about 'cascading information' and a 'blue sky approach'

Mark Steel nailed it when he was describing trying to nail a Suffolk accent before doing a gig there, finds out he got it totally wrong because nowdays the accents is

"yah, yah.. Well basically when we bought it, it was just a barn"

No need for accent description

Is that really something to get worked up about?I call my mother mom...my kids call me mum...who cares...lol

My friend was visiting her sister and the sisters inlaws over in Texas.

They were commenting on the 'mad cow' disease we have in the UK.

Me mate says... " oh you've had over here for years, your government just hasn't told you"

They looked at her all surprised, and she continued in a overdone drawl...

"Why d'yawl thenk ya talk sooo slowww?"

There are plenty of local expressions said within the UK that irritate if you start looking you are spoilt for choice. However yummy mommy or yommy mommy just don't look right.

The use of the word "awesome" really grates!

I have a senior managerial colleague at work who answers everything with "cool"

Arggghhh!

But isn't it usually the case that whatever phrase or saying the Yanks invent, will end up here within a few years?

We should resist this assault on the English Language; after all, it is OUR Language, NOT the Americans!

Can I get? Does my head in.

Also if someone asks "Have you got......?" and the reply is "Yes I do".

ITS NOT YES I DO ITS YES I HAVE FFS!

"Oh my Godddddd!" that these silly young tarts keep spouting, with every other sentence, is another one!

The list goes on!

Hi Yummy, Everyone here assumes that i'm a scouser. I'm a Brummy. I just live in Liverpool. The reason i'm saying that is when I was a girl in Brum we said Mom ..... Ma. Mum. Mom. Mother .....it's all regional never mind international.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Most launguages are made up of other stuff anyways and bits will always be dropped over time whilst other stuff is added.

And the Septics adopt some of our expressions too, so it works both ways.

In retrospect, most of them are emotionally disturbed, so perhaps they don't really use it out of context!
