Bristol spent millions of pounds on cycle lanes.

So why are all the cyclists using the pavements.

Just moaning because I'm a bastard

Hey safety first a lot of pavements are labelled cyclists and pedestrian usable

Some cycle lanes are stupid near me there is one that is a full 15' long directing you in to traffic and then back on the pavement with the net result of purely making you a danger to cars yourself and pedestrians as you swerve in and out, another drags you across traffic so you are then pinned between two lanes of cars only to find there is a traffic island at the end meaning either stop and wait or swerve in to traffic again. Stockport Council either hates cyclists or is run by somebody beyond insane

Don't mind them in shared pavements

But sorry loads of cyclists take the piss on normal pavements

Central

Motorists use cycle lanes here, so it's a deterrent to cycling. A lot of people park in cycle lanes too, where they're not bordered by unbroken lines.

Massive changes to public transport needed, so that it becomes much more attractive, especially compared to driving.

Mold

Probably because of the design and implementation of cycle lanes in the UK is so crap

Cyclists will not use a lane that isn't sufficiently wide enough, removed from traffic or have a separator.

Without any of these they won't feel safe enough from encroachment by heavy, fast moving, metal objects

I can't speak for your area, as I don't know what the lanes are like.

But here, the majority of lanes are not fit for purpose. Too narrow, stop & start, drains & debris causing a hazard.

Speed is also an issue on a few that run alongside the beach

Families use them.

Little kids wobbling all over the place.

Systrans recommend max speed of 12mph on these lanes

I can hit 30+mph on my road bike.

I'm not going to hold up traffic, no car is going to get stuck behind me.

I'll use my own judgement whether the cycle lane or road is better.

I'm a BC coach & ride leader, I teach Bikability in schools.

No but motorists kill far more pedestrianso than cyclists do so I suspect that the suggestion cyclists are more dangerous even on the pavement and even riding like arseholes is somewhat flawed. Which isn't to say it's not selfish, it's not inconsiderate and it's certainly annoying, but you are still far more likely as a pedestrian to be killed or recrime life changing injuries as the result of the actions of a motorist

Because some people need cycle lanes, and some of us prefer the road. Simples.

It's not a legal requirement to use a cycle lane if its been made available.

Same in Manchester. My brother used to cycle into work in the city centre. He's a serious cyclist, insured etc & has cycled in major cities for years.

In April, he hit a pot hole which was hidden by traffic ahead of him. A following bus shielded him from other traffic but not before a car cut in sharply in front of the Bus and struck my brother.

He ended up in A&E, had surgery to fix a broken femur and once on the mend, looked at suing Manchester City Council for failing to maintain their roads.

Cycling groups and lawyers in the city told him it would be a waste of time; the Council has a Zero No Pay policy on pothole or road damage claims regardless of the type of vehicle involved.

Do they ever fix such issues? Only after an accident leads to fatal results!!!
