I am and I am learning myself german, french and spanish. I recently started to learn french. I like the flow and how you speak it. I use duolingo and memrise they are great apps for it and I watch tv and listen to the radio in the languages, it is fun ![](/icons/s/razz.gif) |

I learned German and French at school and learned some Italian since then. I'm not great at any of them.
The sad thing is I don't really have any use for them. I'm not in appropriate countries enough to warrant the hours I have put into their languages, so I wonder if it's worth doing at all. It seems to be more of an intellectual exercise than something useful. It's only a bit more beneficial that a very difficult sudoku.

Kind of..
I'm fluent in Spanglish.
I can read Basic sentence, I can ask and understand Basic questions and responses.
Add alcohol and I can mix with most company and discuss most things.. in a hybrid English/Argentinian/Andalucian/Venezuelan accent.
Only.. I construct sentences and grammar the same as I do in English, which I know is wrong. So I sound like a back to front caveman.. Bit like your average foreign footballer after his first goal in premiership.
It's made me lots of Spanish speaking friends.. because as backward as I sound. I make the effort, it's funny and face to face.. in context.. with body language.. and a willing partner with equally bad English.. a lot can be understood. With enough epic fails to make it a hilarious friendship.
I also like learning English betterer. |

Esperanto, cause its amazing, although I slowed down as there isnt a lot people for me to speak it with.
I had previously learned how to read Hindi script and speak it a bit, it was a challenge to myself because I am dyslexic. I gave up when I got to their numbers.
I know a little French, german and Irish. |

Jepp... I am learning Norwegian. I'm using duolingo and drops. I find it difficult to learn a language as my memory is so bad. Bit getting there. I am in Germany working so picking up a bit of German too. I plan to head back to Norway after I have enough for a van I am going to go for my Norwegian residency and live there. Expensive place but so vakker |

Picked up some Swiss German when our daughter lived there. Mainly names of things in supermarkets and restaurants. And ‘Gruezi’ which every rambler/mountaineer says to you, and you end up saying it back and they think you are Swiss and start chatting away as if you understand them. |

I am trying to. I find it quite sad that England in general doesn't have much in the way of learning languages at school.. every other country seems to be able to speak fluently in at least two languages! |

Agreed, maybe it's because English is so ubiquitous that we don't feel the need to try so hard?
It's kinda why I want to improve my own language skills, probably German first cos I still know a little already from school. |

I spent about 4 years learning Italian. Apps didn't work for me so I ended up paying for private lessons and doing a course at a language center. I've tried using other on-line sites and various apps but just found having someone to converse with was a much better and fun way of learning. |

Absolutely. As someone who was trained as a teacher of English and has both taught and studied different languages, I do not know of anything better than old-style textbooks with exercises. When you do the exercises and type, you concentrate on what keys to press, but if you write by hand, you also pronounce what you write. |

And of course any language needs to be practised. It stopped me learning some new languages for the sole reason of not really having anywhere to practise them.
Now that we are at it... Which one of the learners of Spanish goes and socialises with native speakers? I know a few places. Strictly vanilla! |

Well the benefit of an app is that it is instant correction of a mistake, this has proven great in getting people in learning a language.
The downside is it does not correct pronounciation, so people who learn from apps end up understanding far far more than they can speak. |
