What a crying shame and travesty that these two historic and once great clubs are about to fold and drop out the league. Something has to be done , possible future wage caps ? Maybe a more fair way of distributing revenues down through the divisions ? Any ideas ? |

Better scrutiny of owners. The football leagues test for fit and proper ownership is a joke.
Have you got some money? Yes.
Will you take care of the interests of this business? Yes.
Are you a criminal? No.
Congratulations, you can buy this club. |

The EFL have some sort of criteria to be a football owner I believe it’s called a fit and proper test that definitely needs reviewing.Salary caps yes definitely.Television revenues should also be looked at again with regards to how much money is given to clubs. This one maybe a bit controversial but I am going to say it instead of league 1 & league 2 I would have a league 1 North & a league 1 South that way there would be more local games and fans would not have to do horrendous round trips from North to South and South to North I think there would be more away fans attending these games which would bring in more revenue for the home teams on a regular basis.

Sounds like a plan to the neutral. I’m not sure their fans would agree "
Surely their fans would be grateful of any chance of survival? |

I think that’s a bloody good idea . However setting something up in that manner would be a tough one with probably many teams in opposition |

Both clubs have a proud tradition in football so I don’t think many of the supporters would agree to that |

While wealth distribution sounds a good idea. The top premier league clubs would never allow it to happen , the FFP is stacked in the top clubs favour.
Smaller clubs gamble with their existence by trying to reach the promise land of the premiership. |

Would Telford and Shrewsbury merge if they were in a similar situation?
Knowing the fans the way I do, I guess that would not. (I was a Steward at Shrewsbury and Wolves for 15 years).
If Bolton and Bury merged, what would the new team be called? Where would they play? And, they would have to start at the very bottom of the ladder. |

The wages are rediculous even for smaller teams, wages cap and performance related pay, greedy people lining their pockets.. |

I don't claim to be a football expert, not even a fan,so I don't know how intense the rivalries are to overcome, but surely 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing? |

In the normal world that’s true but when it comes to football it doesn’t. Something similar happened when Wimbledon moves to Milton Keynes and became MK Dons. The hard core of the support never moved with them and formed their own club AFC Wimbledon. Neither club supporters accept the other. |

It’s a valid point . But knowing the local rivalry it wouldn’t happen . Unfortunately there’s a lot of history about to be lost |

"Theres 3 bids for Bury "
The owner still needs to accept a bid and then they have to approved by the EFL. Hopefully the club will be saved but that in itself causes problems because they haven’t played a game yet so it will be a problem for the rest of the league. |

The problems are because TV money is negligible for clubs in leagues 1 and 2. A transfer levy on all premier League purchases should be introduced and these monies should be distributed to efl clubs. It's bad enough for teams in the championship, I think 5 home games are shown on the red button and I think each club gets about 100 thousand quid for it. You couldn't see that happening in the premier League, could you x |

On the face of it, it would seem a very reasonable solution to filter some of the money down from the prem to the lower leagues.
What would really happen though if those clubs suddenly got eg a million pound windfall each? All those clubs, desperate for success and to climb the leagues to get to the cash cow that is the prem, would throw that extra money at more and bigger signings. All the player prices would go up, and you'd end up with clubs in exactly the same situation as now, because desperate owners had gambled everything to try and achieve success.
No, the only solution is for clubs to be run and managed in a sensible and financially responsible way.
How that's enforced I don't know. What I do know though is if you keep bailing clubs out because they put all their money on red, and it came down black, then you'll never change behaviours, and never resolve the root cause of the problem. |

Football isn’t the same anymore, sorry for stating the obvious, kids only dream of playing for the top teams in the premiership, gone are the days where kids grew up wanting to play for the local team and proud to do so.
Too many foreign owners, players and managers..... it’s not a career, it’s a gravy train that players from round the world jump on, extract wealth and disappear.....
I’m sad to say it.....Sky was instrumental in the collapse of the game as a whole. |

One of the problems is that footballs a global game now, an example being my cousin's son , who is 12, supports Barcelona because Messi is the best player in the world. Now, I know they live in Worcester and haven't a league team on their doorstep but when I was a kid Pele was the best player in the world but no one supported Santos, we supported where we were from x |

The ones I feel sorry for, are the employees of both teams. They will suffer most. Players can move on, if they are good enough and lucky enough. The average club worker, will find it very difficult to find alternative employment. And, they will not have the sums of money banked, that the higher wage earning players will have accrued. |

My post copy'n'pasted from another thread on the same subject a few hours ago...
As a fellow Derby fan here OP, we had a few financial struggles back in the 80's as well.
What gets me about all this is that oil tycoons or wherever they have made their money, come and pump billions into a club that they have probably never even seen play, and the top earners, after some of them have cost £50m+ and are on wages per week that would see the average punter happy for the rest of their lives.
Surely if some of the top clubs chucked in about 1% of their wealth, then it would keep the players, staff etc in wages for the foreseeable future

Totally agree . A levy on every players wage in the premier and a levy on premier club profits would help to sustain the lower divisions .
Let’s have it right if we didn’t have the lower divisions and relegations and promotions ,,,, what is there to play for ? |

In American Football, there is a salary cap, and, heavy penalties and sanctions on franchises that run in debt.
Allegedly, one of the reasons the Glazier purchased Man Utd....used profits from there, to bail out the Philadelphia Eagles, which they own(ed). Note the use of the word, ALLEGEDLY.... |

mis-types and auto corrects leads cock leeds |
They're not the first clubs to hit financial problems, for these clubs a benefactior hasn't come forward.
As a guy from leeds I know all too well of incompetent get rich quick owners.
Sadly I doubt these will be the last.
I'm staggerred how a professional football club can survive with crowds that often don't exceed two or three thousand, I heard an interview with barry hearn (ex chairman of orient) and in the time he was there think it was 17 yrs) only twice did the club not lose money the other years he funded the loiss, no way a business can survive doing that.

"Shame them ex reds went on an ego trip with Salford
Sure that hasn’t help bury , don’t get why they didn’t get involved with an existing local club like bury" . The Neville’s were actually born in Bury and I think their mother worked for Bury football club in the offices. What with Paul Scholes been a Oldham fan perhaps Salford was a club they could all agree on buying where there wouldn’t be instant expectations from from the fans they could enjoy the promotions and the glory of taking a non league club into the football league or perhaps as you say a ego trip. |

Like all consortia, there will often be ‘conflicts’ of interest. Did Man Utd not start out life as Salford Utd? That may have influenced their decision? |

Man Utd started life as Newton Heath LYR.At the end of the day the guys found a club they could all agree on and have a project in mind Championship football in 15 years from when they invested in the club as a Cockney Red fan I say good luck to them. |

They should close, my local football club had to, so why are they any different?
Also think of the financial strain they have put on other teams in their respective leagues..
We often forget that lower league teams struggle financially, so missing any games is a lack of revenue they can ill afford..
I’m afraid the football pyramid need a complete revamp
Leagues 1 & 2 need to merge with national league
Make it a 5 regional league system
And have national play of finals for top
15 teams from each region.
Also make each team semi professional a mix of full and part time players

It's a shame about the 2 clubs mentioned but after all it's a business and theres scores of businesses closing every day on the high street,if it costs more to perform than the revenue received why should football clubs be any diferent?it's just maths.!! |

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think there ar way too many clubs in the UK. That's unsustainable. I'm thinking in terms of both professional and semi professional clubs.
Agree with others that in some cases smaller clubs close to each other might have been better off joining, of at least sharing grounds. It would make more sense financially anyway. AC and Inter Milan do it. Why not clubs in the UK? |
